It would appear that the hype surrounding "Cloverfield" has spawned yet another American giant monster movie project. South Park creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone are reportedly set to direct GIANT MONSTERS ATTACK JAPAN!, a story about a young boy who moves to Japan with his father, only to discover that it is overrun with monsters and robots. The script for GIANT MONSTERS ATTACK JAPAN! was written by JF Lawton, whose credits include, Pretty Woman and the upcoming Death Race 2000 remake. With Parker and Stone at the helm, many would believe that GMAJ would either be a adult oriented film or a parody, but this film is aimed for kids. So far no studio or release date have been attached to the project.
When Willian Smith and his young son Johnny move to Japan they discover that the country is constantly being attacked by giant monsters, robots are everywhere and pretty much everyone is a martial arts expert with their own pet mini-monsters. This comes to the delight of young Johnny, who is a huge kaiju movie fan.
It would seem that all the Earth's monsters have been rounded up, and contained on Monster Island (Sounds familiar - remember Destroy all Monsters?). The monsters escape from time to time to attack Japan. William and Johnny are surprised to learn that Japanese monster movies, like Godzilla and Gamera, are being produced by the Japanese government, not as entertainment, but as documentaries to warn people to stay away. It seems that everyone outside the country have simply gotten the message wrong.
The film will center on how the Smith's cope with living in a country that is constantly under attack by monsters. The pair will also make several new friends, including a traveling Samurai called Yojimbo, Mieko and her daughter, Kei, who are part of a family of specially-trained female ninjas, and Seiji who is their appointed translator. William and Johnny will also venture to Monster Island in an attempt to plead with Megamonster, the one giant creature with some human sympathies, to try and end the monster attacks. While on Monster Island the group will witness many monster battles.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone are no strangers to this genre. Many fans will remember the "Mecha-Streisand" episode of South Park. In that episode Cartman discovers the Triangle of Zinthar, only to throw it away, but Kyle recovers it, thinking it somewhat cool. Cartman, however, instantly wants it back when Kyle gets on TV because of it. After going through ridiculous measures to reclaim the artifact, such as sawing a hole through Kyle's roof and searching Kyle's room as he sleeps, Kyle tires of the situation and gives the triangle back to Cartman. Shortly afterward, Barbra Streisand comes to town and meets the boys. Although she becomes angry when she learns they don't know or care who she is, she is greatly interested in the triangle, and later offers a monetary reward in exchange for it, which the boys foolishly accept. They go along with Barbra to her house to make the transaction. Meanwhile, Leonard Maltin seeks out Chef and informs him of Barbra's malicious intentions: to combine the triangle that the boys had found with one she had previously discovered, in order to become an evil super-villain. They then go in search of her mansion home in the mountains to try to prevent her from fulfilling her objectives.
Once at her mansion home, Barbra Streisand ties up and tortures the boys with her singing until they relent and give up the triangle, which Cartman had hidden in his shoe. She takes the triangle and combines it with the one she had unearthed years before, forming the Diamond of Pantheos. The Diamond transforms Streisand into Mecha-Streisand, a giant mechanical dinosaur-songstress that begins to wreak havoc over South Park. Shortly thereafter, Leonard Maltin and Chef find Streisand's home and free the boys, who fill them in on what had just occurred.
As Streisand goes about destroying the town, Leonard Maltin transforms into a Ultraman-like superhero, in hopes of defeating the evil Mecha-Streisand. Streisand proves too powerful, though, and Maltin is quickly defeated. Sidney Poitier arrives and takes the form of a giant turtle much like Gamera. He, too, is no match for Mecha-Streisand, and South Park appears in utter peril until Robert Smith of The Cure comes. He morphs into a giant moth, in the form of Mothra, and is told what to do through a wrist-watch, like Giant Robo. Discovering that Mecha-Streisand's weak spot is the nose, Smith is able to punch the Diamond of Pantheos out of her—using the Robert Punch—thus rendering her powerless. Smith is then able to mega-toss the weakened Mecha-Streisand into outer space, where she explodes. After the fighting subsides, Robert Smith walks off into the sunset while Kyle shouts "Disintegration is the best album ever!"
The boys decide that the diamond is better off separated, as "no one should have that kind of power." However, the episode ends with it being re-discovered, and the boys cowering in the presence of a giant Ike Broflovski, Mecha-Ike.
