This past weekend there was a special ceremony for the dedication of a three-meter-tall Gundam statue, that has been erected at the Kami-Igusa Station, on the Seibu Shinjuku Line in Tokyo's Suginami-ku. The statue symbolizes how much Gundam, created at nearby Sunrise Studios, and anime as a whole, has meant to the areas economy and prosperity. Actually that particular area of Suginami is often referred to as "Anime Town", due to the vast number of anime production companies in the area. In all, some 2400 fans signed a petition to get the statue erected.
Statues of this type have become common in Tokyo over the last couple of years. In 2007, a three-meter-tall statue of Godzilla was erected just outside Toho Studios main gate.
