"Locusts" was a television movie starring Lucy Lawless ("Xena Warrior Princess," "Tarzan"), It was originally broadcast as the "CBS Sunday Movie," Sunday, April 24, 2005 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network

In the disaster drama, a deadly breed of bioengineered locusts create a new and unimaginable threat to the United States by forming multiple swarms covering thousands of square miles and destroying everything in their path.

Dr. Maddy Rierdon (Lawless), a USDA voracious insect expert, is hoping to work on her struggling marriage when a locust outbreak erupts on both coasts of the United States. After she is called upon to assess the situation, Maddy discovers that the locust swarms are a product of a colleague's experiment, and are in fact bioengineered super locusts that can reproduce at a rate 10 times greater than a typical one. They are also three times longer than an ordinary locust, can travel approximately 300 miles a day and could be capable of devouring an entire continent.

The entire population is in a panic as the swarms multiply and attack areas from coast-to-coast. As food supply, livestock and even human lives are threatened by these seemingly unstoppable creatures, the president orders the formation of a special task force to work with Maddy and her team. She addresses the task force, but at this point no one can come up with an answer to eradicate these insects without taking human lives in the process. As the country faces a modern-day plague unlike anything they have ever seen, the government is in a race against the clock to put an end to this devastating situation.

Lucy Lawless is best-known to television audiences as Xena on the series, "Xena: Warrior Princess." Her other television credits include series "Tarzan," "For the Love of Mike" and "Funny Business." Lawless' television movie credits include "Hercules and the Amazon Women" and "Typhon's People." Her feature film credits include "Eurotrip," "Spider-Man" and "The Rainbow Warrior." She is currently appearing in the feature film "Boogeyman."

LOCUSTS was produced by von Zerneck-Sertner Films. Frank von Zerneck and Robert Sertner ("Category 6: Day of Destruction") and Jill Tanner ("They Shoot Divas, Don't They") are the executive producers; Randy Sutter ("Category 6: Day of Destruction") and Peter Sadowski ("The Elizabeth Smart Story") are the producers. David Jackson ("The Jesse Ventura Story") directed from a script by Doug Prochilo.

  1. I wish they would have made more of these Lucy Lawless "nature gone awry" films. They weren't great movies, but they were fun, and I liked the idea of Lawless' Maddy Rierdon character becoming a sort of female Quatermass in an ongoing series. I guess VAMPIRE BATS must not have done well enough in the ratings to justify more entries.
