Getting Grumpy: VFX In Land Of The Lost

Source: Universal / Getty Images

For the Land of the Lost series, the Kroffts created 40 minutes of stop-action dinosaur animation that was repurposed over the three-year run and used many times. That was the first time video and stop-motion were combined and used on television.

Much to the pride of this team, the film is also using groundbreaking technology to create visual effects; as always, photorealism is the goal. “This is not ‘a routine expedition’ for us in VFX,” puns Oscar®-winning VFX supervisor Bill Westenhofer. “We are responsible for many things in this film…from creating key characters like dinosaurs Grumpy and Alice to extending the sets and Sleestak armies.”

Naturally, Westenhofer and his team at Rhythm & Hues were heavily influenced by Jurassic Park and the benchmarks set 16 years ago for dinosaur design. With the tools they had in front of them, however, they were determined to take the Land of the Lost dinosaurs to a whole new level…especially for Marshall’s cunning antagonist, Grumpy. Explains Silberling of the T. rex’s motivation: “It’s Moby Dick. Grumpy is obsessed with Marshall and will stop at nothing to track him down.”

Logically, the Rhythm & Hues team began designing Grumpy by using existing illustrations of T. rex. Combining some of these characteristics with nontraditional ones separated Grumpy from the pack. For example, little horns were added on the back of his head. A 3-D model of Grumpy was then sculpted and scanned into the computer. Creating movements such as arm placement that will show actual wrinkling, the animators began working on the endless details it took to make him photorealistic.

Grumpy is a fully functioning character in the movie that interacts with the other actors, so he has to have a personality. Laughs Ferrell: “Outside of The Flintsones, I think this is the first time you see a dinosaur vindictively pursuing a character.”

Ferrell, Friel, McBride and Taccone found their imaginations put to the test when they shared scenes with Grumpy. In place of the carnivore, one of the digital technicians would hold a 16-foot pole to serve as a marker for the performers. Nicknamed “Grumpy on a Stick” by the crew, the setup had a brightly colored ball on the end that allowed actors to find their eye line.

Shooting in the Land of the Lost Dumping Ground while they were on location in the vast Trona Pinnacles near Death Valley, California, also proved difficult for the VFX team. This set is where the dinosaurs come to feed and where the Grumpy chase sequence begins. “The Grumpy chase, when he is in active pursuit of Marshall, is huge and was a really hard challenge for Rhythm & Hues,” notes the director.

Continues screenwriter McNicholas: “This chase is a huge chunk of the script. When I went to the desert and saw how Brad had set this up, I was amazed. It was incredibly elaborate, packed with jokes and information.”

From shot to shot, it was a constant concern for Silberling, Beebe and VFX supervisor Westenhofer to make sure there was enough room on the screen for the dinosaurs. “It’s challenging to make sure you have space in the frame when you have a 40-foot-long animal,” notes Westenhofer.

Improv on Land of the Lost didn’t exist only on stages and locations. It also happened in the digital world. Recalls Westenhofer: “One of my favorite moments is when Will Ferrell chose, on the fly, to fist bump Grumpy. This will be the first time on the screen you shall see a person do this. It will be hysterical.”

Throughout the story, the cast interacts with dinosaurs. Both on land and on wires, it proved a tremendous challenge for VFX to marry images of real people interacting with CGI characters. To ensure authenticity of look, Westenhofer worked closely throughout production with DOUG COLEMAN and his stunt team to get the exact angles he needed. When a stunt using people was taken as far as it could be taken, the VFX team jumped in to extend the action.

At one point in the film, Marshall must hop onto Grumpy’s back and take a ride. As this visual effect combines both stop-motion and motion-control rigs, the scene was quite complicated to pull off. Prep for this sequence began a month before shooting, with a nine-person crew from Rhythm & Hues operating the high-tech computer and camera gear on set.

To capture the motions of a prehistoric ride, Ferrell was placed on a mechanical saddle that was programmed to move in different directions. So the filmmakers could get a rough sense of the scale of the final product—and see what was happening on the spot, the computerized pre-viz image of Grumpy was laid on top of the live visual feed.

The dinosaur and creature action in Land of the Lost does not stop with Grumpy. From showtune-loving baby pterodactyls that hatch out of eggs and thousands of spiders that crawl out of fruit given to Marshall by Chaka, to a giant crab that gets cooked, the VFX team had more than enough work on its hands.

Signature action pieces, such as the raft falling over the Devil’s Canyon waterfall when the earthquake hits and Marshall, Will and Holly passing through time and space into another universe were handed to Rhythm & Hues to create digitally. Even more challenging, they had to seamlessly retain the comic elements of the film as they designed the environments.

Indeed, an entire world—from the dirt on the ground to the three moons of the sky, was created from the bottom up. Extending backgrounds where the sets end and creating a landscape for the Land of the Lost flora and fauna took much creativity and manpower from all involved in the project.

During an 84-day shooting schedule, one week of shooting in which the VFX department was in total control took place on a blue-screen stage. When principal photography wrapped, Rhythm & Hues switched gears to full throttle as 150 artists were brought on board to finish environments, imagine dinosaurs and add the most intricate of details for the world that time forgot.

This constant pursuit of our heroes by Grumpy led to some physically demanding days for the cast. The principal players wore harnesses for a week and were hoisted 30 feet into the air as they were snapped up by man-eating vines inside Grumpy’s feeding station. Take after take, they dangled over a pile of more than 300 handmade bones, gaining momentum (and soreness) when they joined hands and swung back and forth.

To add to the glamour, prior to shooting on location in Dumont Dunes, the cast was fitted with butt molds. These molds were crafted in plastic and hidden under their costumes so they could easily (and rapidly) slide down the steep 45-degree-angled sandy hills without hurting their respective posteriors in the process.

As Dr. Rick Marshall, Ferrell was required to engage in multiple stunts. From saving Holly by jumping onto a swinging cage raised above a deep pit to being thrown aloft by Grumpy, the maneuvers were challenging for the comic performer. Even though he was harnessed and had rehearsed with the stunt team, it was still a bit scary. “Out in the desert at Trona Pinnacles, they rigged this crane and pulleys that hoisted me 30 feet into the air…as if I was being picked up by my backpack with Grumpy’s teeth,” says Ferrell. “Fortunately, we got it in one take, because it would have taken a lot of psyching up to do that again.”

As his character was scripted to fight Enik the Altrusian while on high wires, Danny McBride also learned to get comfortable above ground as well. This was also the first big action-movie experience for Anna Friel who, among other things, became skilled at swinging Holly’s leather belt as a weapon against the Sleestak.

Jorma Taccone also had his share of physical challenges. He had to learn primate mannerisms that included walking while staying hunched over and running while using his hands as well as his feet. To get into character, Taccone watched National Geographic Channel DVDs. When it came time to suit up, however, he realized he had no idea how tough it would be to maneuver in that posture.

While Holly and Will are not brother and sister in the film, they bicker just as much as they did on the show. Though McBride and Friel had it down to a science, sometimes the play fights got a little out of hand. Recalls Friel: “Danny would joke that during the fight sequences I was dangerously close to clocking him in the eye. During one take, I did hit him a bit, but he said he was fine. Unbeknownst to me, he went to his makeup trailer and came out with a big black eye and bleeding. I never felt so bad. He milked it for all it was worth, and good on him.”

Contests McBride, who says he was indeed walloped by his co-star: “Anna will say that clocking me was an accident. She will say that I was in her way. But if you review the tape, you’ll see that she is lying through her teeth. And it was a hard hit. I’m not going to lie. Almost brought a tear to my eye, but I had to keep cool and you know, act like it didn’t hurt.”

Michael Lantieri and his special effects team of 25-plus were handed the arduous task of simulating a major earthquake at the Sleestak Temple Plaza that threatens to annihilate the Land of the Lost and all its denizens. The effects included having tons of simulated heavy debris fall about our heroes.

One of the big-ticket items used was nicknamed the “Weber Pod” (as it resembles a Weber barbecue) by the crew and required five cameras to capture every angle. Explains Lantieri: “It’s a giant egg-shaped pod on the end of the stage that weighs 18,000 pounds. We knocked the legs out from underneath it and tumbled it down the stairs into the temple. It is always a challenge to be safe and get it to do what you want it to do, but it worked.”

By allowing debris to fall and shaking the cameras and sets with giant motors and concentric cams, the team simulated the quake with a combination of maneuvers. Continues Lantieri: “We built extra lighter-weight debris that we put on trips and releases so that we could drop them into the set on cue…as we moved the camera through. We took existing pieces of the set, split them and used hydraulics to split the 15-foot Sleestak head sculptures open.”

It was an intricate game of rigging to re-create the earthquake and tumble huge boulders across the set. Lantieri and his team took pieces of the set rock walls and cut them apart in giant pieces that measured 20 feet by 30 feet. They then attached motors and hinges to the pieces so that they would shake and loosen up. Much like the shifts that would occur in an actual earthquake, the parts moved out of sync.

The prop department joined the SFX department in creating items for Land of the Lost that weren’t par for the course of a typical film. At one point, the cast is slimed with Grumpy’s T. rex snot, which the SFX team designed from a coagulated methylcellulose. Ever the fringe scientist, Marshall even dowses himself with dinosaur urine that looks quite real but was actually green tea.

One of the key props for the film was the Tachyon Meter, Marshall’s homemade invention that enables his crew to transport to other dimensions. The prop department, helmed by SCOTT MAGINNIS, worked with production designer Welch and rendered a drawing that included flashing lights, see-through pumps and electronic readings. From a hodgepodge of objects, including an old iPod, they made by hand four identical versions of this measurement tool to be used throughout production.

Explains Welch: “The cumbersome strap-on Tachyon Meter is the kind of cobbled-together technology that you look at and think, ‘This guy is out of his mind.’ But at the same time, you think, ‘Maybe this actually works…’”

In addition to the Tachyon Meter, the props department souped up a vintage Toyota Land Cruiser for Marshall’s road adventures. The roof housed all manner of scientific gadgetry to allow him to stay mobile and prepare for anything that could possibly happen to a rogue scientist.

The New Trailer And Photos For Deep Sea Monster Raiga

It has been months since we last reported on the Japanese monster film, "Deep Sea Monster Raiga." Here is what's been happening. The production has been plodding along in preparation for the films debut on June 27, 2009 at Ikebukuro’s Shin-Bungeiza theater as part of an all-night film event called “Tokusatsu Kaiju Tengoku” (SFX Monster Heaven). The event will not only feature the premiere of "Raiga" but also Masaaki Tezuka‘s, "Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S.", and Keita Amemiya‘s film "Zeiram". After the premiere there is to be a 40 minute presentation by the cast and crew.

In preparation for the world premiere, the fist full-length trailer for "Deep Sea monster Raiga" has risen out of Tokyo Bay for all you Kaiju maniacs to enjoy.

I want to warn you, the clip starts out looking like a "Puffy Ami Yumi" video, featuring the vocal talents of the films three young leading ladies, Enosawa Manami, Urata Mao and Oriyama Miyu. Don't be fooled, the clip may start out like a J-Pop music video, but that only lasts about half a minute. The giant monster action comes directly after. Also don't be fooled by the monster, the head of Raiga may look exactly like the millennium Godzilla, but its an entirely different monster......really.

We have also included a bunch of movie stills for you to sink your teeth into (trailer after the photos):

The Warehouse's caretaker Artie (Rubinek) charges Pete (McClintock) and Myka (Kelly) with chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to control the warehouse itself.

Guest Stars Include:

Ivan Sergei (Crossing Jordan, Charmed) is "Ross" an EMT from Unionville, New York. Ross and some of the other townspeople begin to display bizarre behavioral symptoms -- involuntary (and potentially dangerous) expressions of their subconscious desires.

Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica, Burn Notice) stars as FBI Agent "Bonnie Belski" who clashes with Pete and Myka when they interfere with a case on her Chicago turf. But after the third inexplicable bank takeover, she finds herself willing to make use of their expertise.

Roger Rees (Cheers, The West Wing) is "MacPherson" one of Artie's former Warehouse colleagues, who has gone rogue and is now competing with the team to gather dangerous and powerful objects for his own use.

Erica Cerra (Eureka, The L Word) and Niall Matter (Eureka, The Best Years) portray "Jillian and Gary Whitman," small-time thieves on the Las Vegas strip, whose fortunes, twisted by the strange power of luck-inducing artifact, take a fantastic turn.

Joe Morton (Eureka, Terminator 2) stars as "John HIll" a charismatic prison inmate and an extremist religious leader in a Florida prison.

Mark Sheppard (24, Battlestar Galactica) is "Mr. Valda" the enigmatic representative of the Regents, the mysterious organization that controls Warehouse 13. He disapproves of Artie's methods as the team leader of the Warehouse, and isn't afraid to let him know it.

Michael Hogan (Battlestar Galactica, The L Word) portrays Myka's father "Warren Bering," who receives a dangerous object anonymously in the mail which puts his life in jeopardy.

The series is produced for SCI FI by Universal Cable Productions. It is executive produced by Jack Kenny (The Book of Daniel) who also serves as showrunner. The BBC today revealed that the companion for the forthcoming series of Doctor Who will be Karen Gillan.

Twenty-one-year-old Gillan will star alongside new Time Lord, Matt Smith, when the smash hit drama returns to BBC One in spring 2010.

With filming due to begin this summer, Gillan beat off dozens of hopefuls to land one of television's most coveted roles.

Gillan said: "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it.

"Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can't wait to get started!"

Lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, added: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation of little girls will want to be her. And a generation of little boys will want them to be her too."

Executive Producer and Head of Drama BBC Wales, Piers Wenger, said: "We knew Karen was perfect for the role the moment we saw her. She brought an energy and excitement to the part that was just fantastic. And when she auditioned alongside Matt we knew we had something special. It is a partnership that is ready to take on the universe!"

New Photos From Gathering Of Heroes: Legend Of The Seven Swords

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Avery Guerra

It has been a few months since we heard anything about Mark Steven Grove and Jon Firestone's cool looking fantasy film, "Gathering of Heroes: Legend of the Seven Swords". Apparently the film makers are very busy working on the project and aren't in any hurry to finish the film, reportedly wanting to get everything 'just right' before releasing it.

The duo has, however, just released a brand new set of movie stills, which Avery Guerra was able to provide for us.

Since it has been a while since we last talked about "Gathering of Heroes", here is the synopsis again, followed by the new photos:

In the mystical realm of Ryntia, the forces of the underworld are aligning to unleash a plague of evil upon the surface. The deadly bat-like Blood Reavers, the Saurian Maurauders, the Orcish Warmongers and the feline Shadow-cat mercenaries have pledged their respective clans to the service of Bre’Gwen, queen of the deep elves. Together they seek to destroy the human and Elven kingdoms and rule all of Ryntia in the name of evil.

But even with their combined strength, Bre’Gwen’s forces are no match for the powerful Grayraven kingdom led by the majestic king, Garrick Grayraven. To ensure their success, Bre’gwen forges an alliance with an unlikely human who holds the secret to acquiring a powerful artifact that will allow them to summon and control an army of undead warriors from centuries past.

Guided by fragmented visions, a mysterious Oracle gathers seven unlikely heroes to face the threat. A heroic knight, a deep elf sorceress, an eccentric bard, a silver elf druid, a righteous paladin, a barbarian huntress, and a brooding thief are the only ones capable of stopping this evil at its source...but first they must embark upon a quest to find the legendary seven swords of Draconus.

I don't know how good a film this one will be, but you sure have to admire the work that has gone into the visuals and costumes!

Oklahoma Bigfoot Researchers Come Home With Prints And Personal Encounters

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Tulsa World

D.W. Lee, director of the Mid-America Bigfoot Research Center, and his research team emerged from the woods of southeastern Oklahoma this past weekend with a print cast and a number of personal experiences to ponder over.

Indeed Lee's expedition seemed more like an episode of "Ghost Hunters" than a typical crypto search. While trekking through the woods the team spotted a pair of large upright walking creatures with their night-vision gear. Moments later the team was pelted with rocks, presumably thrown by the creatures.

"A lot of people, it doesn't really dawn on them when rocks land near them" that Bigfoot could be responsible, Lee said.

The true prize find of the expedition was not a bunch of bruises caused by projectiles hurled by Bigfoot, however, but a 15 3/4 inch cast made from a set of tracks discovered some 5 miles deep in the wilderness.

"The toes were clearly visible on the cast after it was lifted up," Lee explained.

Additionally, Lee and his team heard "vocalizations" in the woods that they recognize as the tell-tale mocking calls of Bigfoot. Whoop sounds, "attempted imitations" of whippoorwills and mimicking of dove and owl calls were also heard.

Now that the group has returned home, they intend on spending the next several weeks milling over the hundreds of photographs and videos shot by the 30 members who participated in the weekend expedition.

I have taken the time before to point out the fact that actress and model, Scarlet Salem, is a chameleon. You can honestly set out a batch of her photos and ask anyone if they are the same girl? I'm willing to bet that most people wouldn't be able to tell. She has that many different looks.

Case in point are her two latest publicity photos. In one she is a redhead and in the other she is a blond. I swear they are the same model.

Take the time to look closely.....I'm sure you won't mind.

Tennant's Doctor Making The Move From TV To Big Screen

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: WENN

It seems that David Tennant is making sure that his incarnation of The Doctor will continue on despite his leaving the popular UK television series. It appears that the actors decision to leave the show last year may have just been an attempt to clear his schedule so he could star in a series of Doctor Who movies.

Hot on the heels of the news that Tennant's Doctor would be making a special appearance on the spin-off series, "The Sarah Jane Adventures", comes a report from Britain's Daily Express stating that the actor is well into negotiations to star in a movie based on the "Doctor Who" television series.

Their unnamed source explains, "The script is still in the early stages but David wants to be in the film. There have already been discussions and David needs to feel the story is right but right now things are looking very positive."

"He understandably wants to go off and do different roles but he still loves "Doctor Who." If the film takes off and there's demand for more, he can continue to play the Doctor occasionally without having the pressure of the relentless schedule that the TV series demands."

Tennant announced in October he would be stepping down from the role after three years as the time traveller, passing the baton to newcomer Matt Smith.

These new "Doctor Who" films will not be the first big screen exploits of the infamous Time Lord. Peter Cushing played the Doctor in the 1965 film "Doctor Who and the Daleks", and it's 1966 sequel "Daleks' Invasion Earth: 2150 A.D."

In the 1970s an attempt was made to produce a "Doctor Who" movie starring Tom Baker called, "Doctor Who and the Scratchman." That film came close to production, but funding fell through at the last minute.

The First Look At Chris Ray's Megaconda

Man, you gotta wonder what's going on in the independent monster movie bizz? Film makers are churning em faster and faster. There's films about Mega Sharks, Giant Octopuses, Dinocrocs, Supergators, Raging Sasquatches, hot Indian chicks turning into snakes, and now thanks to Chris Ray, we have "Megaconda."

It is clear that the new motto is "bigger is better." You have The Asylum with their Mega Shark, who is big enough to chew up the Golden Gate Bridge paired against a Giant Octopus that can swallow a nuclear submarine whole without having to chew. God only knows how big "Megaconda" is going to be? I have a feeling that it will make the snake in "D-War" look like fish bait.

Ray has just finished principal photography on his giant snake flick. The production has now turned to the post and effects stage.

The director was good enough to send us a batch of photos, of course, there aren't any of the "Megaconda." You know that film makers never show their monster until right before release time!

If it helps, just visualize a really frickin big snake in these shots, and you will get the idea.

Silent But Deadly Productions Presents - Silly But Delusional

Well, now that small independent productions are all the rage now, I figured that I would continue to ride the wave....for as long it lasts. Today I have another little film made on a shoe-string budget. This time it isn't a film made with toy Godzilla figures or a guy in monkey suite scaring a bunch of kids. I thought that it would be nice to see something whimsical.....something light hearted and silly.

The first episode of Silent But Deadly's series, entitled "Silly But Delusional" made it's debut last night on the Numa Network. For those of you not familiar with SBD, it is an independent all-female production company founded by Rachel Grubb and Brooke Lemke. The two young actresses founded the company in hopes of providing talented woman with an opportunity to showcase their acting and movie making skills.

"Silly But Delusional" stars both Rachel and Brooke as two roommates who's newspaper is continually being stolen. As result, Rachel's character, Gina, begins to go a little bonkers, believing that the theft is some sort of a personal violation. On the other hand, Brooke's character, Jill, tries to deal with her roommates transformation.

Now, I want to point something. In real life Rachel has an obsession with all things Batman related. In fact I would bet that she feels more at home dressed as either Catwoman or Harley Quinn than she does in the 'wife-beater' she wears in the episode. Let's just say that kissing a poster of The Joker may not be something Rachel hasn't done before.

It is refreshing to see her doing something else besides being run through with a machete, like "Camp Kill" or being screwed by a crazed Redneck, like "Terror Overload."

The episode may not be much, but it is low-budget, so I think that it could be considered trendy. Keep your eyes peeled for more from Silent But Deadly very soon.

UK Stage Cast Spots The Loch Ness Monster

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: The Iverness Courier

The cast of the UK stage production of "Allo 'Allo" got more than they bargained for, when the boat that they were taking a cruise in picked up five very large sonar images in Loch Ness.

The five mysterious images reportedly were "Nessie shaped" according to one long time researcher, who couldn't explain what he was seeing.

"This has got me puzzled and has every appearance of a genuine sonar contact," said Adrian Shine, of The Loch Ness Project, who has been studying Loch Ness since 1973. "The fact there's five items on the screen can be explained, as a single object often appears again as an echo."

"This certainly adds to the Loch Ness mystery and will be the subject of further investigation."

The crew of the Jacobite Queen, which had bee chartered for a leisure cruise by the actors, witnessed highly unusual readings on the ship's sonar screen, somewhere between Dores and Urquhart Castle.

Actress Vicki Michelle explains, "I went down to the boat's cabin and caught an arch shape on the monitor, followed by four more. The whole cast had been hoping to see something on the trip and, if it was Nessie, that positive energy probably brought her out... or perhaps she's just a fan of the show!"

"In all seriousness, whether it was Nessie or not, we all definitely saw something on that monitor," she added.

The ships captain, John Askew, reports that in 15 years of sailing on the Loch, he had never had sonar responses like this.

The images have now been sent for scientific analysis.

Hey Kids! It's Ultraman......Sorta

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Jared Foust / Avery Guerra

With a $70 zombie movie making all the news at Cannes, it is only fitting that I spotlight another, made from the money in my pocket, production entitled "Ultaman Sorta".

As many of you know, we here at Monster Island News, love low budget, independent, productions. Come to think of it. With this "Colin" movie making headlines, and Hollywood and overseas studios foaming at the mouth to make their own version of it, many of the films that I have written about may be next. Is it possible that we are trend-setters here. Are low-budget films the next "big thing"?

Anyway.....

As you may have guessed, "Ultraman Sorta" is film maker Jared Foust's do-it-yourself homage to the Japanese super hero, Ultraman. Now, when I say do it yourself, I mean Jared did the whole thing himself. He wrote the story, directed it, starred in it, edited it, and did all the visual effects for it. The only thing Jared didn't do was take a few promotional photographs, his mother did that.

How did Jared feel about taking on all the facets of a film production? Well, he describes it as a sort of a living hell, "I made this in the summer and fall of 2006 working almost exclusively by myself with the notable exception of having my mother take two or three still photos. Everything else is me. All the roles, all the camerawork, editing, effects, etc. Some of you may find that impressive but it was kind of hell. I hate working on films like that, it's a very lonely existence. All the effects were done as a combination of Final Cut and Photoshop, many shots being drawn in frame-by-frame in Photoshop. Seriously, it was hell."

Well, I hate to break it to Jared, but a lot of directors and indie film makers describe the process of making a low-budget production as hell. It kinda comes with the territory.

Presently Jared is working on the 3rd episode of "Ultraman Sorta." This time around he promises better effects, costumes and a more advanced storyline.

You have to admit that Jared really has captured the essence of the classic Ultraman series with his little films. Who knows, Maybe "Ultraman Sorta" will be the talk of Cannes next year?

Hey, it could happen.......

Here is the first episode of "Ultraman Sorta":

Researcher Hopes Flooding Will Flush Out The Yowie

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: All News Web / The Morning Starr

Just about everyone has heard about America's Bigfoot, Canada's Sasquatch, Russia's Alma and Nepal's Yeti, but these aren't the only upright walking harry cryptids out there. Australia has one of their own, called the Yowie, and the man who has devoted his life to tracking it believes strong evidence to prove it's existence may be close at hand.

Tim the "Yowie Man" has set up camp in the village of Springbrook, Queensland (Eastern Australia) in hopes that the recent torrential rains and flooding in the area will flush out the elusive creature.

“Historical records indicate that there is a direct correlation between significant rain events in this part of Queensland and the sightings of Australia’s fabled Yowie,” the researcher explains.

He also adds “Rain to the extent experienced up here in the last week would make a large hairy bipedal hominid creature very uncomfortable and potentially force it into areas it might not otherwise frequent. The soaked soil and muddy bogs created by the heavy rain is more conducive to animals, including Yowies, leaving their footprints.”

Indeed the creature has been seen more frequently as of late. This past April two vacationing backpackers from Germany and France spotted a Yowie in Katoomba, New South Wales. The two young ladies were approached by a very large harry animal that was making a lot of noise. When they used a flashlight to locate it in the dark, it ran off.

"Admittedly we did not get a close look but we think what we saw looked like the American Bigfoot, basically covered in fur and about two meters tall. It definitely had no clothes on and was not human.” Reported Ingrid Schoen from Germany. “We were petrified and almost lost our way back in our nervous state” she continued.

The recent heavy rains have already forced several animals out of the woods and into populated areas. In fact the town of Bowen was recently over-run by giant Eastern Taratulas fleeing the rising water.

The above image is one of the best photographs of the Yowie, taken in 2006. If you ask me, the creature doesn't as much look like a Bigfoot as it does Bugs Bunny's nemesis Gossamer or Godzilla's foe Hedorah (The Smog Monster), but whatever it is, it looks big, harry and mysterious.

Will the rain bring out the elusive monster? The Yowie man is optamistic "If I’m really lucky I may even get to see one.”

The Doctor Makes A Surprise Appearance On The Sarah Jane Adventures

Source: BBC

Doctor Who fans are in for a treat this Autumn as David Tennant makes a special appearance as The Doctor in CBBC's hit drama series The Sarah Jane Adventures with a starring role across two episodes.

Investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith, one-time companion to that strange wanderer in time and space known as The Doctor, is reunited with her old friend as The Sarah Jane Adventures is back for a third series of alien-busting adventures on CBBC this September.

Elisabeth Sladen, who plays Sarah Jane, says: "When I heard the news that David was going to be joining us I was absolutely over the moon. Not only has it made my day but it will also make the viewers' day.

"It's fantastic news that Sarah Jane is going to spend some time working with The Doctor again and is testament to just how successful this CBBC series is."

Russell T Davies, Executive Producer of The Sarah Jane Adventures, adds: "Viewers thought they may have to wait until November for the next full episode of Doctor Who, but this is an extra special treat.

"And it's not just a cameo from David – this is a full-on appearance for The Doctor as he and Sarah Jane face their biggest threat ever."

The series includes 12 weeks of brand new adventures featuring a new alien race, the reptilian Veil and their enemies the Judoon, alongside an extraterrestrial girl that can make people play games against their will.

There will also be a living painting, the inhabitants of a supposedly haunted house, monsters who want to infect Earth with a strangely aggressive weed and a chance for Sarah Jane to find personal happiness with someone who could be the perfect person to complete her family.

Alongside adopted son Luke, Sarah Jane's team is made up of Luke's streetwise pal Clyde Langer, their schoolmate Rani, who lives opposite and has aspirations to become a journalist like Sarah Jane, and Mr Smith, their Xylok supercomputer up in the attic, plus Sarah Jane's robot dog, K-9.

Behind The Scenes Photos From Norman England's It's All Good

(Photo Caption: Norman England on the set of 'It's All Good', "Me demonstrating once again that I am never at a loss for words!")

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Earlier this month director Norman England completed a two day shoot on his latest sci fi film project, "It's All Good." Filming took place in the city of Tokorozawa, Japan, in a house designed for use by film and television productions.

Assisting England on the set were Japanese director and producer, Takeshi Yagi, known for his work on the "Ultraman" TV series and "Tokyo Gore Police" director Yoshihiro Nishimura. Having the two veterans of the Japanese film industry on hand proved to be invaluable to England, who was beginning to think that he had bitten off more than he could chew in wrangling all the facets of the production just prior to shooting.

In the end, England was more than pleased with the shoot, his staff and his cast.

England hasn't released too much information about "It's All Good", but we do know that it is about an alien parasite.

Here are some photos from the two days of filming with captions provided by Norman England:

Heat Up Your Memorial Day Weekend With A Little Scarlet Salem

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Everyone knows if you want to attract more visitors to your website, then you need to post photos of hot babes. Well, I dare you to find anyone hotter than Scarlet Salem.

The relative newcomer has begun to attract a lot of attention as of late. Scarlet's future as a model and actress seems to be on track for certain success. After starring in one film in 2007, and three in 2008, this year her dance card was filled up by a total of nine films including "Terror Overload", "Killer Biker Chicks" and "Night on Has Been Mountain."

The actress will some begin working on yet another film, "Frozen", in the upcoming months.

MIN readers may be thinking that I am developing some sort of "thing" for Minnesota girls, after this post, and yesterdays article about another "Land of 10000 Lakes" beauty Rachel Grubb.

If I am developing such a fascination.....who could blame me?
