Fukushima's Tourism Rebounds 77% of Pre-Quake Levels

by Armand Vaquer

Above, Fukushima Airport's banner on their Ultraman exhibit.
Considering the media misinformation about the nuclear power plant accident, tourism to the Fukushima region has risen.

According to Kyodo News:
The number of tourists to Fukushima Prefecture rose 26.3 percent in 2012 from the previous year to 44.46 million, rebounding to 77.8 percent of 2010, the year before the triple disaster -- an earthquake, a tsunami and a nuclear meltdown -- struck, the prefectural government said Monday.
Tourism "steadily recovered due to restoration of tourist facilities and declining misinformation about the nuclear power plant accident," an official at the prefecture said.
For kaiju fans, the only item of interest in the region is the Ultraman statue that stands in Fukushima Airport's terminal building. The statue is three meters tall and was erected to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the airport's opening. Combined with scenes depicting other monsters and clothing used in the filming of Ultraman, it is the first permanent display of its kind in Japan.

It is listed on page 18 of The Monster movie Fan's Guide To Japan.

Gareth Edwards Teases 'Destroy All Monsters' for the 'Godzilla' Sequel

Bring on the Monsters! One filmmaker we're happy to hear more from via Comic-Con is Godzilla director Gareth Edwards, who came in to tease some kick ass footage from his new take on the monster movie. We live blogged the footage during the Warner Bros panel, but also Edwards spoke to press after and dropped in some big teases/hints as to what we're in for. In one discussion via ScreenRant, Edwards actually mentioned a Godzilla classic - Destroy All Monsters from 1968 where the big lizard fought just about everyone in a monster army. "I think multiple creatures make better movies in terms of the image of Gojira," he says.

Edwards at first spoke about the movie he's just wrapping shooting, and talks about the original design of the new Godzilla monster. "In a way we approached it was, imagine in 1954 (when the first Godzilla movie was made), that this creature really existed and someone saw him from Toho, the Japanese studio, and went running back to the studio and said, ‘I’ve seen this creature and it kind of looked like this.’ And they tried to draw it and they tried to make a suit and they did a very good job of it but then, when you saw the real creature, you go 'Okay, I totally understand how you got that suit from that creature but now I see the real thing. Oh my God, I totally believe that it’s completely real.' And that’s how we approached it." Make sense?

He says they "went through hundreds of designs, and never stopped playing really until the last minute and got to the point where it was like, ‘Is there anything else that we want to change about this design’? And I was like, personally no, I’m very happy with it. And Toho was very much a part of the approval process." Here's the original Gojira 1954 poster compared to the new Godzilla teaser poster from Comic-Con 2013:

So what about Destroy All Monsters? Well, the mention comes in an answer that Edwards gives when asked about where he could go and what he could do in a sequel, once they get this re-origin movie out of the way. We already know there's multiple monsters in the upcoming Godzilla for 2014 - we saw one in the footage at Comic-Con, and the synopsis hinted at a few others, but the more the merrier. Edwards gives this answer:

'Star Wars: Episode VII' Will Be More 'Empire Strikes Back' Than 'Attack Of The Clones'

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy says this time they're aiming for a character-driven film with 'complicated stories.'

When Lucasfilm and Disney announced that they would team up to bring a new trilogy of "Star Wars" movie to the screen, what got the most hardcore fans excited wasn't the idea of seeing new films along the lines of "Attack of the Clones." The promise of more "Star Wars" movies — especially if they continue the story of Luke, Han, and Leia — came with the hope that things might go back to how they used to be, back when Yoda was a puppet and nobody knew what a midi-chlorian is.

So it's hard not to get excited when Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy speaks at "Star Wars Celebration Europe" (via IGN) and says something like, "The story and characters are all we're talking about right now. We have an amazing team at ILM, who can create fantastic effects, but if we don't have a great story and characters, the effects mean nothing."

Kennedy — who's splitting her time between Lucasfilm and Bad Robot to shape up the script — implied that the new trilogy will hew closer to the original three films.

"I do think making huge popular culture — and I've had the good fortune to be a part of a lot it — is really hard to do and get right," Kennedy continued. "And if you don't spend the time you need on developing characters, and finding stories, complicated stories, the audience gets tired because they think they're seeing the same thing again and again."

Attn Ridley Scott: Katy Perry Would Like To Play Rachael In 'Blade Runner 2'

While "Blade Runner 2" is still a worrisome spectre on the horizon for fans of the original, gaining "Green Lantern" writer Michael Green to pen the screenplay this past spring, it's still so far away (Ridley Scott's next film is the Moses flick "Exodus") that it's mostly rumor and speculation that's going to drive news of the movie for the next little while. It will also given budding actors and actresses a chance to openly campaign for roles in the movie, and one starlet isn't missing an opportunity. Thespian and pop star Katy Perry would like to go sci-fi for "Blade Runner 2," and she hopes that her performances in "The Smurfs" saga will open the door. Really. "With films, I hope to win you all over with animation and then do other films," Perry told Metro. "I am really interested in comedy, and I would really love to play Rachael...

John Williams Confirmed to Score 'Star Wars: Episode VII'

"Star Wars: Episode VII" might be flush with new talent behind the lens, but there's at least one constant coming forward from the previous six installments. Composer John Williams — yes, he who devised that infamous d-d-d-dah dah! theme — is officially back in the fold.

Lucasfilm Prez Kathleen Kennedy hit up Germany's "Star Wars" Celebration Europe this weekend and confirmed the news that Williams would be back and presented a nice little prerecorded video of him speaking on the film.

"Having worked on all of the six films, I'm just happy to be continuing to be a part of the of whole fun of doing it," Williams said. "I haven't seen the script, so the story is still unknown to me, the new story, but I can't imagine that there will not be some references to the existing stories that we know that would necessitate and make appropriate the use of some of the earlier themes.

It Came From Antenna TV!

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Antenna TV is bringing back the feel of the long forgotten afternoon movie for one week in August.

Sci Fi fans who grew up in the 70s and 80s will remember the classic afternoon movie features that used to air on local TV channels. Every summer afternoon the youth of America would park their butts in front of the old boob tube and savour a seemingly endless parade of Godzilla movies, B horror flicks and sci fi epics with themes that truly had to be seen to be  believed.

If you pine for the good old days like I do, then you should be on the edge of orgasm to learn that the cable network Antenna TV is about to attempt to recapture the feel of the afternoon movie feature, if only for one week (August 5 - 11).

Included in this line up of B movie madness is the Ray Harryhausen classic "Mysterious Island", the Jurassic mash up "Dinosaurus", "Attack of the 50-foot Woman" clone "The 30-foot Bride of Candy Rock", The Terrornauts" (not to be confused with'The Micronauts') and "12 To The Moon."

If your not already in your footy pjs with a bowl of Captain Crunch in front of the TV then check out this very retro trailer:

World War Kaiju - It's About Time That The World Settled It's Problems With Monsters

From Kat Rocha

WORLD WAR KAIJU!

Atomic monsters come to Kickstarter in the form of a graphic novel that asks, “What if Doctor Strangelove created Godzilla?”

World War Kaiju is the story of an alternate history, one in which the atom bomb was never created and the ultimate weapon of mass destruction is the kaiju—fifty foot tall radioactive beasts spawned from the mysterious KAI-235 isotope. Follow the journey of one journalist as he teams up with a retired CIA operative to uncover the truth about the conspiracy behind the monsters and the men who plan to use them to dominate the world.

World War Kaiju is a tribute to the kaiju genre in all its forms (both high and low). The brainchild of sci-fi author Josh Finney, WWK is a love letter to the golden-age of kaiju cinema. It looks back to an era when the world loved atomic monsters, but feared the atomic bomb, and warps history in ways that only men in rubber suits can.

THE KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN

World War Kaiju is currently seeking support on Kickstarter. The campaign will be running from June to August. Team Kaiju needs a total of $15,000 to complete production of the art, and then print the book at the best quality possible. Our ultimate goal is to supply fans with a 200+ page hardcover edition of book one.

TEAM KAIJU IS...

JOSH FINNEY -- Author and occasional artist, Josh Finney is the mind behind the awarding winning graphic novels Titanium Rain, Utopiates, and soon to be released novella, OBJECTIVE: Terminus. He is best known for penning stories that are heavy on action, yet always reach deep into heady subjects involving science, politics, and philosophy. In another life, he was an illustrator for DC’s Batman/Catwoman, has done concept design for Star Trek: Enterprise, and created cover art for countless 90′s era industrial & techno bands.

PATRICK McEVOY -- Patrick McEvoy is one of your favorite artists. Seriously. You just didn’t know it. You may not recognize his name, but you know his art. McEvoy has spent the better part of a decade illustrating some of the most loved and memorable art to come out of the H.P. Lovecraft mythos. Card games, novels, posters, t-shirts—you’ve seen and probably own at least one piece of McEvoy’s art. He’s best known for his work on Arkham Horror, Call of Cthulhu, and oh yeah…a little known title called Game of Thrones.

MICHAEL COLBERT -- Michael Colbert comes from a film background. By day he’s worked as a gaffer on productions such as Babylon 5, Torchwood, Dragon Age 2, and True Blood. By night he writes comics. His latest title is the cyberpunk action tale, Crazy Mary.

Comic-Con: Godzilla Experience offers early look at new monster design

If the Godzilla Experience offers any indication of the scope and, well, sheer size of the upcoming Legendary Pictures’ movie directed by Gareth Edwards, then the film’s feature creature may be just as impressive as Guillermo del Toro’s kaiju in “Pacific Rim.” Add in a mix of nostalgia and who knows what kind of destruction Godzilla could wreak on the box office.

We lined up outside of a nondescript (except for the picture of a huge creature painted on it and symbols in Japanese) building in the Gaslamp Quarter to await our guide. During what starts out to be a tour of Godzilla memorabilia inside the building on a small set, complete with a malt shop/diner, our group was suddenly whisked from the showroom to the behind-the-scenes headquarters where it seems scientists are tracking Godzilla’s movements and all heck has broken loose. It was also at this point that we were conveniently told to turn off our cameras and recording equipment. People are in a severe panic mode because, wouldn’t you know it, it seems the monster has come ashore in San Diego. That’s a long swim from Tokyo.

It gets even scarier when we are hurried inside of an elevator to escape the rampage that has reached our doorstep (why is it that we seem to be going up?). The rumbling lift stops and we are told to go through an office to go out of the emergency exit. And that’s when we see it. Through the office windows of our high-rise, Godzilla walks past the building. Massive, muscular and menacing, it doesn’t have the feel of the man-in-a-suit Godzilla many of us know.

Fully restored Star Trek Galileo Spaceship to call Space Center Houston home July 31

Space Center Houston will publicly unveil Galileo, the newly restored spaceship prop featured in the 1967 Star Trek episode “The Galileo Seven” after a yearlong restoration project lead by Adam Schnieder, a die-hard Star Trek fan and memorabilia collector. The life-size spaceship will be on permanent display inside Space Center Houston’s Zero-G Diner and will be one of only a few exhibitions in the world where visitors can see iconic sci-fi history that has influenced generations of innovators.

“Science fiction, especially a series like Star Trek, has inspired many astronauts and engineers,” said Richard Allen, president and CEO of Space Center Houston. “This exciting new addition to our collection connects and aligns with our ongoing mission to motivate, stimulate and inspire young minds to consider careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).”

Actors from the Star Trek television series, made possible by Space City Con will be part of the memorable event including original Star Trek cast member Don Marshall who appeared in The Galileo Seven episode as Lt. Boma; Robert Picardo who played The Doctor on Star Trek: Voyager; Galvestonian Tracy Scoggins who portrayed a Cardassian scientist in an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine as well as Monica Colby in the popular 1980s drama Dynasty; Denise Crosby who played Security Chief Tasha Yar in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Gil Gerard, who appeared as a Starfleet Admiral from the new episode Star Trek Phase II and is best known as Captain William Buck Rogers in Buck Rogers in the 25th Century as well as Marshall Teague who played supporting roles in both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager.

HAZE: Some Malaysians are starting to blame ALIENS

With this year's haze hitting a 16-year high, some Malaysian netizens are taking to humour to help them cope with their frustrations.

A modified photograph has been making its rounds in social media websites like Facebook, Twitter and QQ showing a smoggy stretch of the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP) and what appears to be a tentacled creature partially obscured in the background.

One of the captions that accompanied the photograph reads, "Oh crap, so it actually isn't Indonesia's fault," in an allusion to the post-apocalyptic alien-invasion genre that's currently popular in cinemas as well as television.

The owner of the Facebook account who wrote the caption told Malaysia Chronicle that he decided to use this caption as an back-handed slap to the many racist and xenophobic comments that have arisen as a result of the haze, not just in private comments but also in both the mainstream and online media.

Lucasfilm shoots down rumours that J.J. Abrams is leaving Star Wars: Episode VII

Over the last few weeks, a rumour has been steadily building that all may not be well behind the scenes of Star Wars: Episode VII.

The problem as reported, has revolved around the fact that Abrams is unwilling to shoot the movie in the UK, as it would involve a lot of personal upheaval for a director who has only ever directed projects in the US.

The issue had been thought to be so serious that claims have been emerging online that Abrams is set to walk away from the project entirely. However, Lucasfilm has released an official statement claiming that this is not the case.

Superman v Batman: A villainous turn

Zack Snyder and David Goyer will have to tread carefully to keep fans hooked, but this could see the genre go stratospheric

Make no mistake: Warner Bros has pulled off a huge coup with its announcement at this weekend's Comic-Con that the next Man of Steel movie will feature Superman battling Batman. Even with rival studio Marvel using San Diego's annual fanboy Mecca to reveal the title (and antagonist) of the next Avengers film, it is the news that Kal-El and the caped crusader will be squaring off that has caught the imagination of public and media alike. That's some feat when you consider that Marvel's comic book ensemble was by far the biggest film of 2012 at the global box office, while Man of Steel hasn't yet passed the haul taken by the fourth Spider-Man movie and got a lukewarm thumbs up from critics.

NECA Licensed To Create "Godzilla" Tie-In Figures

by Armand Vaquer

Above, Godzilla at the 2004 Hollywood Walk of Fame.  This year's Comic Con marked Godzilla's biggest media splash in the U.S. since this event almost nine years ago.
The hoopla over Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros. Godzilla during this year's Comic Con International was the biggest splash our favorite radioactive monster has made in the U.S. since his induction into the Hollywood Walk of Fame (and the premiere of Godzilla Final Wars at Grauman's Chinese Theater, along with the Godzilla float in the 2004 Hollywood Christmas Parade) a few short months shy of nine years ago.

As intended, the Godzilla panel and the Godzilla Encounter (set up at a warehouse in San Diego) generated a lot of publicity for the movie, set for release a year from now.

One additional bit of news has come out of the Comic Con, it has been revealed that NECA has been granted a license to create movie tie-in figures next summer. This has been reported by Bloody Disgusting and Dread Central. NECA will be creating small scale and large scale Godzilla figures.

Looks like 2014 will be a great year for Godzilla fans!

Legendary Pictures Pushing "Godzilla" At Comic Con

by Armand Vaquer

Legendary Pictures' Godzilla push at this year's Comic Con has generated a lot of media buzz.

The buzz continues at Forbes.com:
With the Godzilla experience and a panel at Comic-Con’s giant Hall H, the studio is giving Godzilla the full court press. Legendary is now moving from Warner Bros. to Universal where it won’t have access to the DC Comics characters that have helped make Legendary so successful. Instead, Legendary head Thomas Tull will have to work on finding new material that he can translate into huge franchises. If Godzilla is a hit it will certainly turn into a franchise and one with lucrative merchandising and spin-off potential. It could even result in a real theme park ride akin to the Godzilla experience at Comic-Con. If the film is a flop, Tull will have to keep looking for the next big thing.
The article laments the good word-of-mouth for Pacific Rim hasn't translated into more people flocking to theaters to see it. So far, it has earned $110 million at the box office. They wonder if the 2014 Godzilla will suffer in the same way.

However, there is a big difference between the two. Pacific Rim is a new concept in the U.S. (although it is more "old hat" in Japan) with flashy special effects. Godzilla, on the other hand, is an established character with a built-in fan base. If the Godzilla word-of-mouth is favorable next year, it could make the difference between failure and success.

The 1998 TriStar Godzilla did make money, but the poor reviews (deservedly so) ended up causing the movie be less successful than it could have been.

From what I've seen so far, Legendary Pictures appears to be treating the character as it should be: as a nuclear terror. TriStar treated it as a joke. From what little we've seen of the Godzilla design, it appears to be undoubtedly Godzilla (I like how the fans are saying it looks "majestic" and "massive"). TriStar's was nothing more than a mutated iguana who eats fish and lays eggs. It didn't look like Godzilla and didn't act like Godzilla. Legendary seems to be "doing it right" this time.

We have a year to go before we see how it all pans out.

To read the Forbes article, go here.

Godzilla: "Massive" and "Majestic"

by Armand Vaquer

Above, a Gira-Goji prop at the Bandai Museum in 2005.  Photo by Armand Vaquer.
Things are happening down in San Diego at the Comic Con International.

Those who were able to attend the session caught a glimpse of Godzilla. The reactions, thus far, has been "majestic," "massive," "chills," "goosebumps" and "no mutant iguanas this time."

Attendees say that the tone of the movie (from the footage they've been able to see) is much different than the 1998 Tri-Star version.

According to the Denver Post:
SAN DIEGO—Exploding airplanes, flattened trains, massive missiles and even more massive monsters greeted Comic-Con fans Saturday morning.
The footage showed Godzilla battling another giant monster, nearly decimating an airport and sending cities into chaos.
From what I am gathering, Godzilla battles with a "giant insectioid" monster.

The indicators (for days) are that Godzilla looks like Godzilla. That alone is a major step in the right direction!

I haven't seen any photos of the Big G from the session as yet.  But the day isn't over.

That blows! Sand dunes move in on famed 'Star Wars' set

Scientists report that Anakin Skywalker's hometown is under attack -- not by Tusken Raiders but by the desert itself.

The sands of time might soon bury the sands of Tatooine.

Sand dunes blowing over the Tunisian desert are poised to cover a famous "Star Wars" film set that served as the backdrop for numerous scenes in "The Phantom Menace."

More than a dozen buildings, real and mocked up, still stand on the site of the fictional Mos Espa, where the young Anakin Skywalker grew up. But a team of scientists reports that mounds of wind-swept sand have made contact with some of the Mos Espa buildings, threatening to damage a popular geek landmark and tourist destination.

For the past several years, the scientists have used the fictional dwellings as a marker for measuring the migration of giant wind-blown, crescent-shaped sand ridges known as barchans, which are produced by wind moving predominantly from one direction. They visited the site located in the Tunisian region of Oung el Jemel in 2009, and noted that sands had already overcome part of a nearby set used in "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope."

Dynamite Announces The Twilight Zone™ Comic Book Series, Signs Legendary Writer J. Michael Straczynski as Ongoing Writer

From Dynamite Entertainment

Dynamite signed a deal with CBS Consumer Products to create a comic book series based on one of the most captivating television shows of all time, The Twilight Zone, featuring all-new tales of science and superstition as written by acclaimed author and Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski, one of the privileged few celebrated as a Special Guest of San Diego Comic-Con International 2013.

"One of the most deeply satisfying and creatively exciting experiences I've had in 25 years of writing for television and film was my stint on the new Twilight Zone television series," says Straczynski. "I've been a fan of the original series since I was tall enough to reach for the TV tuner. So I was profoundly excited when Nick Barrucci came to me with the possibility of doing the new Twilight Zone comic to come out from Dynamite."

The Twilight Zone took millions of television viewers on a weekly journey to another dimension, starting in 1959. The enduring success of The Twilight Zone spawned three revival series (one of which featured episodes written by J. Michael Straczynski), a feature film, novels, comics, and other related merchandise.

Regarding the unique nature of The Twilight Zone series, Straczynski says, "The immediate creative question to be resolved was: how do you transplant or adapt the TV anthology format into comic form? Individual stand-alone issues don't give the issue-to-issue continuity you need to consistently bring in modern readers, and if it's a year long arc, it's not an anthology. The solution: three four-issue arcs that are connected by theme, character, and location... so that in reading one arc you get one side of the story, with its own supernatural or science-fiction elements, then you turn the character around to another character in that sequence who has his or her own story for the next four issues... and then at the end, you connect all of these individual stories into one overlapping tapestry, so you could literally view the book as individual stories as initially published, or layer the pages to create one big story. It's a cool structure that I'm not sure has been attempted before, so this will be an awful lot of fun. I'm very excited to be working with Nick and his team on this book, and hope folks will check out the books when they come out."

J. Michael Straczynski is the perfect choice to reinvent a television icon for the comics medium after spending many successful years straddling both media. In television, Straczynski has written over 300 produced episodes and six TV movies. In film, Straczynski's credits include five produced movies in six years: Changeling for director Clint Eastwood, Ninja Assassin for the Wachowkis, Thor for Kenneth Branagh, Underworld Awakening, and World War Z for Paramount and Brad Pitt. He has written nearly 400 published comics for Marvel, DC and Image, including The Amazing Spider-Man for seven years, followed by Thor, The Fantastic Four, Before Watchmen, and others.

"It's a thrill, an absolute thrill, to not only develop new tales for Twilight Zone, but to welcome J. Michael Straczynski as our honored host," says Nick Barrucci, CEO and Publisher of Dynamite. "We've wanted to work with him for years, and it's finally materializing with this perfect combination: Straczynski and Twilight Zone, together again! The energy and enthusiasm behind the scenes is going to yield some truly mind-blowing science fiction."

Robotech Returns In Crossover With Voltron! Dynamite Partners with DC Entertainment, World Events Productions, and Harmony Gold

From Dynamite Entertainment

Dynamite Entertainment proudly announces that they have acquired the rights to publish comic books based on the beloved science fiction anime, Robotech®. In a unique sub-licensing arrangement with DC Entertainment and with the Harmony Gold USA, Dynamite Entertainment will publish a new series beginning with a Robotech / Voltron crossover event. This crossover marks the first time uniting the popular Robotech cast with the five lions of Voltron, a fan-favorite World Events Production property.

The Robotech series debuted in 1985, an adaptation combining concepts from three Japanese anime series (Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Genesis Climber Mospeada, and Super Dimension Century Southern Cross) into a new, cohesive narrative. It followed three generations of Earth soldiers who salvaged and repurposed alien technology in combat against consecutive extraterrestrial invasions, and was animated by the renowned animation studio Tatsunoko Production Co.

Voltron, based on the story of five robotic lions piloted by a team of brave space explorers that combine to form a mighty metallic hero, launched in the U.S. in September of 1984 and quickly became a #1 rated animated series that will celebrate its 30th Anniversary in 2014.

"Robotech and Voltron are two of the most recognizable anime series that defined '80s pop culture," says Tommy Yune, creative director at Harmony Gold and mastermind behind the upcoming crossover. "Both franchises have endured in their popularity today and fans have long speculated of an epic crossover between the universes. The opportunity to do so is an honor, and it's a welcome challenge to construct a storyline that works well with key characters on both sides. Most important of all, it's going to be a lot of fun with plenty of surprises."

"Robotech is one of the finest intellectual properties ever to come out of Japan, and we are so very fortunate to be able to contribute to its legacy of thrilling science fiction action and drama," says Nick Barrucci, CEO/Publisher of Dynamite Entertainment. "We're also thankful to have such great partners on the Robotech journey, DC Comics and Harmony Gold, and joining us in this incredible first-ever crossover with Classic Media's Voltron. We've published Voltron for years, and this is definitely rewarding to place the two fan-favorite universes together."

"Skyscraper-sized robots and city-crushing monsters are no strangers to the Dynamite gang, thanks to our fine experience with the Voltron license," adds Barrucci. "We've been the proud home to Voltron since 2011, and I think our talented creators and editorial staff really balanced the science fiction and space fantasy elements of that franchise with the human story of its pilots. We're very excited to continue the adventures of the Five Lions and the Voltron Force pilots as part of the crossover penned by Tommy Yune, and recapture the very best qualities of our previous Voltron series in this exciting new venture. Robotech / Voltron is a fan's dream, one we're thrilled to add to our line of comics!"

The new Robotech / Voltron team-up adds additional content to Dynamite's existing Voltron projects, published as two series thus far and expanding the mythos licensed from World Events Productions. The first-ever pairing of these two giant animated properties is expected to attract huge media and fan attention in time for Voltron's 30th Anniversary. A new Robotech series will follow in the wake of the crossover.

The appreciation for the original Robotech television series, its comic spin-offs, and expansive universe of additional content runs deep at Dynamite, as evidenced by the passionate reflections of Joe Rybandt, the company's Senior Editor. "Every day after school, I would watch Robotech and I loved it. LOVED IT. Probably for a lot of the same reasons that I loved Claremont's Uncanny X-Men, in that it was soap opera mixed with incredible action and excitement. Also, it was my first introduction to episodic television starring giant robots and, y'know, GIANT ROBOTS. I've gone back to the show every now and again, and still find it a rewarding experience, filled with great characters and amazing design. And now, here I sit, getting ready to set a new course with the comics."

Legendary's Godzilla To Be Unveiled Today

by Armand Vaquer

According to this website, principal photography for Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros. Godzilla wrapped on Thursday.

Also, according to the site, the design for their Godzilla will be unveiled today (it is now Saturday) at the San Diego Comic Con. I can't vouch for the accuracy of this, but I am putting this out for you anyway. I would have attended this year's convention, but I started a new job with a new company and couldn't get the time off on short notice.

Legendary's presentation will be in Hall H between 10:45am and 1:15pm today.

'Star Trek' tricorder becomes the real McCoy

You'll soon be able to embrace your inner Bones McCoy. Decades after "Star Trek" made the small device that could scan for vital signs famous, the medical tricorder is ready for prime time.

The small handheld medical reader used by Dr. Leonard McCoy in "Star Trek" has been replaced by a smartphone. The real-life tricorder is a sleek, square device called a Scanadu Scout that works with your phone.

The Scanadu can read your vitals in 10 seconds, measuring heart rate, temperature, respiratory rate, blood pleasure, ECG, and emotional stress. You hold it to your forehead and the information is wirelessly transmitted to your smartphone. It works on iOS and Android devices.

Founder and CEO Walter De Brouwer explained the Scanadu Scout is not just for doctors. He's looking to enable patients with an informative, easy-to-use device so they can play a larger role in the healing process.

"People need something cool, that they immediately understand and that they can have a relationship with their doctor." De Brouwer joked, "We don't want to make something just for retired engineers with a chronic disease."

Star Wars Episode 7 news update: Plot spoilers and rumors swirl

Star Wars Episode 7 news continues to swirl as Jedi fans eagerly await updates on the film developments. In recent rumors a photo has been posted on Twitter allegedly showing the movie's screenplay, and that has sparked further rumors that some solid plot spoilers and leaks could soon be coming.

The production company owned by J.J. Abrams, Bad Robot, recently posted a photo on Twitter without much explanation, but which show a number of apparent scripts on top of one another.

The scripts are on black covers with red sides, and many fans have immediately begun speculating that the photo is showing the Star Wars completed screenplay.

However, Bad Robot has continued to tease fans and has not confirmed what the picture they posted is of exactly.

The company posted their teaser on Twitter: "Hot off the presses. Can you guess what's behind the cover? #FoundAtBR #MysteryScript."

The image shows the pile of scripts with a Bad Robot logo on the front, and nothing else is there to give away what the image is of. However, that's all that's been needed to spark a wave of rumors on the Internet from Star Wars fans.

Star Trek Icon Leonard Nimoy Has “Lived Long and Prospered”

Leonard Nimoy says there is a “strong strain of Judaism” in everything he does—including his famous on-screen hand gestures.

Best known for his character Mr. Spock in the “Star Trek” television show and movies, most recently in his cameo as Spock Prime in this year’s blockbuster “Star Trek Into Darkness,” Nimoy’s Vulcan hand gesture comes from an experience he had at synagogue when he was 8 years old.

Nimoy’s father told him not to look as worshippers averted their eyes during blessings recited by the kohanim.

“The men were chanting, shouting and praying in an Orthodox service,” Nimoy, 82, says in an interview with JNS.org. “It was very passionate, very theatrical. I was chilled by the whole thing.”

Years later, while on the set of the “Star Trek” television show, Nimoy suggested to the director that Vulcans like Spock should offer some gesture in greeting other Vulcans.

“The director asked me what I had in mind and I suggested the gesture used by the kohanim,” Nimoy says. The gesture went on to be accompanied by the expression “live long and prosper.”

A Silver Springs story: Ricou Browning was the Creature

In the mid-1950s, a grotesque costume turned Ricou Browning from a soft-spoken family man into an ugly "gill man," also known as the "Creature from the Black Lagoon."

Now remembered along with King Kong and Godzilla as one of the most horrific monsters of the silver screen, Browning had the underwater role of the amphibious monster in the Universal Studios black-and-white horror flick, originally shot in 3-D. Browning then continued filling that role in two sequels, "Revenge of the Creature" and "The Creature Walks Among Us."

According to Browning, the underwater portions of the film were shot at Silver Springs, Wakulla Springs and in a tank at Marineland in St. Augustine. While professional actors played the creature on land, Browning donned the full-body suit for the underwater scenes.

"It was cumbersome at first," Browning recalled. "When I first put it on, it seemed awkward and clumsy. But, once I got into the movie, I forgot I had it on. I became the creature."

While Browning's swimming ability made him a perfect candidate for the monster's role, his daughter, Renee Le Feuvre, who is working on her dad's biography, remembers him as a mild-mannered, but fun, family man. She recalled the exotic animals he brought home in a day when a permit for such pets wasn't required.

Warner Bros: 'Wonder Woman is one of top three priorities'

Warner Bros has promised that Wonder Woman is "one of the top three priorities" in its DC Comics project.

DC Entertainment chief Diane Nelson has said that they are keen to get the character "right".

"We have to get her right, we have to," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "She is such an icon for both genders and all ages and for people who love the original TV show and people who read the comics now.

"I think one of the biggest challenges at the company is getting that right on any size screen. The reasons why are probably pretty subjective -she doesn't have the single, clear, compelling story that everyone knows and recognises.

"There are lots of facets to Wonder Woman, and I think the key is, how do you get the right facet for that right medium?

"What you do in TV has to be different than what you do in features.

New Amazing Spider-Man 2 Villain Revealed, And She Could Change Everything

The Amazing Spider-Man 2, like nearly every other big movie coming out in the next year, is making its way to San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, and we're still trying to figure out what surprises just-wrapped superhero sequel might offers us. Turns out, though, that one of its stars might have already let the cat out of the bag.. but not the Black Cat. Talking to View London, Felicity Jones admitted "it's all quite shrouded in secrecy," but admitted that she plays "the Goblin's girlfriend. I'm in a relationship with him, and his accomplice. I'm on the dark side." If by "the Goblin" she means "the Green Goblin"-- and we can't imagine why she wouldn't-- that likely makes her character Lily Hollister, Harry Osborn's girlfriend who comes in contact with the Goblin serum that turns Harry's father into the original Green Goblin and becomes a villainess of her own...

Another "Godzilla" Poster Released

Another poster has been released by Legendary Pictures:

They seem to be doing the right things, unlike the 1998 abomination.  From what I can see here, Godzilla looks like Godzilla.

The New Godzilla Revealed?

The New Godzilla Revealed?

Stuff from Legendary Pictures "Godzilla Encounter" from this years Comic Con is quickly leaking out all over the place. Of the items that have surfaced online is a photograph of a statue that very well may reveal the true look of the Godzilla we will see in the final film. Though many fans believe it is merely a concept design that was scrapped, you have to admit that the face looks a lot like Godzilla we saw in the films first teaser trailer released last year at this time

.Fans should also feast their eyes on the concept art above wherein a massive set of Godzilla's fins have broken the water while the crew of an aircraft carrier braces for impact.

ARE YOU EXCITED YET!

I sure as hell am!

James Bond Will Return...With Sam Mendes

by Armand Vaquer

Above, Daniel Craig as James Bond.
Good news!  Sam Mendes, director of Skyfall, will return to helm James Bond 24.

According to an article posted (of all places) in JapanToday:
LONDON —Sam Mendes will direct Daniel Craig as 007 in the 24th installment of the blockbuster James Bond film franchise about the fictional British spy.
The film is set for release in the autumn of 2015 and follows on the success of Mendes-directed predecessor “Skyfall”, which earned $1.1 billion at the box office worldwide and was the highest-grossing film of all time in Britain, producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said in a statement.
The screenplay for the Sony Pictures Entertainment and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc film will be written by John Logan, who also worked on “Skyfall”.
“Following the extraordinary success of ‘Skyfall’, we’re really excited to be working once again with Daniel Craig, Sam Mendes and John Logan,” Wilson and Broccoli said.
This definitely raises my hopes (and expectations) that the follow-up movie to Skyfall will be just as good, if not better. To read the full article, go here

"Godzilla" Comic Con Poster

"Something very big is coming to Comic Con!" is the word from Godzilla director Gareth Edwards.

Edwards is directing Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros.' version of our favorite radioactive kaiju. They have also released the poster (below) they will be unveiling at the convention.

Little Minxies Sinful Suzie Pinup Girl Statue

How come this statue got sculpted without a shirt? The devil made them do it! Just the right size at 8-inches tall, the Little Minxies Sinful Suzie Pinup Girl Statue is coming soon... and she's dressed to kill! She has thigh-high latex boots, a pointy pitchfork, and a sensible blue hairdo. Oh, and horns. Big horns! We assume she's not safe for work, but then again, we don't know where you work. So, it might be cool to add her to your store right away!

"The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan" Ordering Update

by Armand Vaquer

Above, Yuu Asakura with "The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan." Photo by Armand Vaquer.
Outside of the dealers who are carrying the print edition of The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan, the only other place to obtain a copy is through me. This was made necessary after ComiXpress.com decided to cease business back in May.

I have updated this page with new ordering information, including a handy-dandy order form in .pdf format. Simple, eh?

To order, all you have to do is print this order form, complete it and send it to the address as posted here in "Godzilla green." That's it!

I have plenty of copies available as I ordered a big supply earlier this year.
