X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)(20th Century Fox)

Source: 20th Century Fox

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, the first chapter in the X-Men saga, unites Wolverine with several other legends of the X-Men universe, in an epic revolution that pits the mutants against powerful forces determined to eliminate them.

Hugh Jackman reprises the role that made him a superstar, as the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, adamantium claws, and a primal fury known as berserker rage. X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE stays true to the tone of the X-Men motion picture franchise, continuing the films' balance between spectacle and reality, while heightening the emotions and relationships.

The film also introduces a team of mutants, including several whose appearances in the movie series have been long anticipated. Movie audiences will meet Team X, a covert military cadre comprised entirely of mutants. Its members are: Wolverine; his brother Victor Creed, aka Sabretooth, a feral being of unimaginable power; Wade Wilson, later to be known as Deadpool, a high-tech mercenary skilled at swordplay; Agent Zero, an expert tracker and lethal marksman; Wraith, a teleporter; Fred J. Dukes, also known as The Blob, a morbidly obese and super-strong behemoth; and Bradley, who can manipulate electricity. Leading them is William Stryker, a figure introduced in "X2" but whose origins and motives are now fully explored, for it is Stryker's complex relationship with Wolverine that defines much of Logan's past ...and future.

X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE also explores Logan's tragic romance with Kayla Silverfox. Kayla's fate triggers Logan's involvement with the ominous Weapon X program, a top secret, billion-dollar military experiment, in which Wolverine and other mutants are key players. They include Gambit, a young Scott Summers (later to be known as Cyclops); a beautiful young mutant named Emma Frost; and the aforementioned Deadpool, against whom Wolverine faces his ultimate challenge.

While the three previous X-Men films were set in the not-too-distant future, the main story of X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE - as the saga's first chapter - is set prior to the events of those pictures, in the not-too-distant past, sometime in the 1970s. But the epic sweep of the new film also encompasses flashbacks that span 150 years. It has a scale and ambition new to even this high-reaching series. "We wanted to exceed expectations in every way," sums up star and producer Hugh Jackman. "We couldn't just make a very good movie; it had to be much more than that."

To that end, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE provides a great roller coaster ride of adventure and action, while tapping into complex themes and rich and powerful emotional conflicts that have been hallmarks of the X-Men films. "Yes, the film needs to be visually stunning, and the action has to be amazing and hard-hitting," says director Gavin Hood, whose 2005 film "Tsotsi" won the Academy Award® for best foreign language film. "But you've also got to buy into the story and characters. The core idea of the film is that it's about someone who is not comfortable with who he is, who's at war with his own nature. That's an interesting character to explore. The theme of being at war with one's own nature, fuels and energizes the film so it becomes more than just action for its own sake."

Jackman was convinced that Hood was the right man for the job after he viewed Hood's modestly-budgeted "Tsotsi," a penetrating drama set in Johannesburg about a hardened teenage criminal whose life is changed when he becomes emotionally attached to an infant left in the back seat of his car. "The character Tsotsi was at war with himself, just like Wolverine is," says Jackman. "I got carried away by Tsotsi's journey, and by Gavin's instincts for character and story.

"The characters have always been at the heart of the X-Men comics and movies," Jackman continues. "People connect with and relate to them."

Indeed, when comics legends Stan Lee and Jack Kirby created the X-Men over 40 years ago, they shaped characters and stories with drama and conflict. The X-Men were an unusual heroic group - at times sarcastic, antisocial, and clearly flawed - yet sympathetic when battling the demons of their lives, or taking on powerful villains in their universe of special powers.

The character of Wolverine came years after many of his X-Men brethren, first appearing in comics in 1974 (as a creation of writer Len Wein and art director John Romita Sr.) before becoming an integral member of The X-Men, as well as the headliner of his own comics series. The character's impact on pop culture has been profound; last year alone, Wolverine was ranked #1 of Wizard magazine's "Top 200 Comic Book Characters of All Time" and was ranked #4 in Empire Magazine's "The 50 Greatest Comic Book Characters."

The first X-Men movie, with then-Hollywood film newcomer Hugh Jackman taking the key role of Wolverine, was released in 2000 to critical and audience acclaim, reinvigorating the comics-to-film genre. "X2," released in 2003, and "X-Men: The Last Stand," out in 2006, also achieved huge success. By 2009, over 70 percent of American moviegoers had seen at least one of the X-Men movies.

For Jackman, reprising the role was an opportunity to expand and deepen the three previous films' exploration of Wolverine. "We now get to see Logan's journey and the battle within, as he owns up to the events of his past," says Jackman. "Wolverine has certain qualities that are sacred, and number one is that he's a badass. Borrowing the character's catch phrase, Wolverine is the best there is at what he does, and what he does isn't very nice." Adds producer Lauren Shuler Donner, who served in that capacity on the three previous X-Men films: "Logan's got attitude, humor and a way about him. He just doesn't give a damn - and that's fun for an audience to experience."

The main story of X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE begins with Logan seeking solace from a past rife with darkness, working as a lumberjack in the remote Canadian Rockies. Finding love and contentment for the first time in his very long life, Logan leads a seemingly idyllic existence with schoolteacher Kayla Silverfox. "He couldn't be further away from the past he's so long been trying to escape," says Jackman. "Kayla is a catalyst for the biggest changes Logan's ever faced," says Lynn Collins, who took on the role after Jackman had seen her on stage in "The Merchant of Venice," opposite Al Pacino. "She leads him to think differently about the conflict of being human and being a mutant. Their relationship leads him to try and heal old wounds, and experience the consequences and risks of love."

But as Logan searches for the peace that has eluded him more than a century, "the world he's been trying to escape keeps drawing him back in," says Jackman. "As with anything in life, unless you've really dealt with a problem, unless you're really at peace with it, the problem tends to recur. And it's clear from the beginning that Wolverine has run away from things he needs to face. And one of them is Victor, his brother."

Victor Creed, also known as Sabretooth, possesses powers similar to Logan's. They are both virtually indestructible and have a feral, super-human strength. Victor's ferocity encompasses a feline-like fighting style and leaping ability; at times, he'll race to the attack on all four limbs.

As we learn in flashbacks, Logan (born James Howlett) and Victor did not learn they were brothers until their teens, in the aftermath of a family tragedy that leads to the emergence of Logan's signature berserker rage and claws that power their way through his flesh as razor-sharp spikes, turning him into something more and something less than human. Logan and Victor flee their home, forming a bond that transcends even brotherhood. As indestructible warriors, they fight together through major conflicts spanning two centuries, including the American Civil War, World Wars I and II, and Vietnam. "Logan and Victor are a team," says Jackman. "They go through a journey together."

But Victor relishes the fight much more than Logan. "Victor is incredibly brutal and has a bloodlust unlike any character I've ever played," says Liev Schreiber. "This guy is a real killer." Victor's savagery in battle leads the two to face a firing squad - but of course mere bullets cannot stop them. Recognizing their unique abilities, a military officer, Col. William Stryker, asks them to join a special team he is putting together - a covert, black ops unit known in comics lore as Team X, comprised of mutants possessing powers that make the team unstoppable.

The character of Stryker was introduced to movie audiences in "X2," in which he tries to bring about the destruction of all mutants across the world. That film hinted at a long history between Logan and Stryker, but only through quick flashes of Logan's lost memories. Now, with X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, the full measure of Stryker's impact on Logan, Victor and other mutants is fully detailed.

Since the new film is set years before the events of "X2," a younger actor was needed to portray Stryker. (Brian Cox essayed the role in "X2.") The filmmakers tapped Danny Huston to play Stryker. "Every character Danny plays is so vivid and present," says Jackman, who cites Huston's performance as a sinister, complex figure in "The Constant Gardener," among many others that impressed the actor-producer

Huston sees Stryker as a kind of Dr. Frankenstein. "In a way, he helped create Wolverine. Stryker both hates and loves Logan, and certainly wants to control him and other mutants. He sees the mutants as children or wild animals. In controlling them, he can use them as weapons for what he perceives to be the safety of mankind. He loves Wolverine like a son. But he has to manipulate him and possibly exterminate him for what Stryker sees as a personal crusade, which he believes is bigger than any one man - or any one mutant."

A key member of Team X is Wade Wilson, later to be known as Deadpool. Wade is a highly-efficient killing machine nicknamed the "Merc with the Mouth," for his endless stream of wisecracks. Ryan Reynolds seemed destined to take on the role; the actor is a longtime fan of Marvel's Deadpool comics, and was even mentioned in one issue. "I've wanted to play Deadpool most of my adult life," says Reynolds. "It's a beloved character with comics fans, so it's not a responsibility I take lightly." Wade/Deadpool's weapon of choice are katana swords, and Reynolds trained extensively to make his swordplay convincing. "I lived, ate and breathed swords," he recalls.

Another Team X member is Bradley, portrayed by Dominic Monaghan ("Lost," "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy). Bradley, who can control and manipulate electricity, is a haunting figure, having gone into hiding from Stryker and Sabretooth, as a circus sideshow attraction. "When we meet Bradley in the film, he's kind of fallen off the grid," says Monaghan. "With Team X, he was a guerrilla soldier, but when things got out of hand, and he saw things he didn't want to see, he left the unit."

Team X member John Wraith, who becomes Wolverine's closest friend, is a teleporter who can appear or disappear at will. "He's not to be messed with," says actor and music icon Will.i.am, of the famed group The Black Eyed Peas, who makes his motion picture acting debut in the film. Long after departing Team X, Wraith remains closely allied with one Fred J. Dukes, a supreme warrior who later let himself go, becoming a 700-pound behemoth known as The Blob - the meanest man you've ever seen. Kevin Durand, who portrayed a fearless mercenary on "Lost," donned one of the largest and most elaborate fat suits in motion picture history, inside of which was a state-of-the-art cooling system originally designed for NASA.

An equally fearsome warrior is Agent Zero, an expert tracker with lethal marksmanship skills, played by Daniel Henney. The American-born actor, who became an enormous star in South Korea, notes that Zero and Logan, although once members of the Team, are enemies. "He's always been jealous of Logan," says Henney, "and he's determined to stop him."

The mutant known as Gambit was not a member of Team X - Logan encounters him much later in his journey - but he plays a key role in Logan's revenge-fueled quest. Beloved by fans of the X-Men comics who have long awaited the character's debut in the film franchise, Gambit, who also goes by the name Remy LeBeau, has the ability to charge matter with volatile kinetic energy, causing the object in question to explosively release its charge on impact. Gambit's favorite things on which to direct his special talents are a deck of playing cards and a simple boe staff - both of which he turns into powerful weapons when the occasion dictates.

Gambit's presence in X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE will certainly be celebrated and discussed by fans, a fact not lost on the filmmakers. Says producer Ralph Winter, who's been involved in all the X-Men movies: "Before the start of each [X-Men] film, people would ask me, 'Is Gambit in the movie? Is he going to throw cards? And I'd say, 'Hang on, we'll get to him.'"

Actor Taylor Kitsch, who nabbed the role after wrapping work for the season on the acclaimed series "Friday Night Lights," says he understands that "the fans have been waiting [for Gambit's appearance in an X-Men film]," and reports that he worked hard to live up to their expectations. "When I arrived in Sydney, to begin work on the film, I told the producers I was here to train and to work," says Kitsch. His training included long sessions with the boe staff and fighting sticks - as well as interminable hours going through packs and packs of trading cards, learning the character's signature moves. "By the time cameras rolled, I could do quite a bit with a deck of cards," he says.

But in telling this story of "origins," no mutant has greater impact on Logan's journey than his brother, Victor Creed. Appalled by Stryker's ethically-challenged directives, Logan had abandoned Victor and Team X, but the two brothers cannot be separated by time or by distance because they are two sides of the same person. "I think of Victor as Logan's doppelganger, his darker side," says Liev Schreiber. "What drives both of them is their desire to find their place in their world - to belong to something. And that one thing that Victor belongs to is Logan. When that bond is broken, Victor looks to reconnect with his brother, for better or for worse."

It is Victor's brutal murder of Kayla that triggers Logan's quest for revenge. When they are reunited, Logan and Victor fight, leaving Logan battered and wounded. Stryker, again entering Logan's life and again forever changing it, offers what he calls the only solution: the top-secret Weapon X program ("X" denoting the Roman numeral for ten). In the procedure, Logan's entire skeleton will be bonded to adamantium, an impenetrable metal alloy that will make Logan virtually indestructible -turning him into the Wolverine we know from the previous X-Men movies. "To beat Victor," Stryker tells Logan, "you're going to have to embrace the other side of you. Become the animal."

But to undergo this transformation, Logan has to suffer more pain than any man could ever endure. Audiences had seen tantalizing flashes of the Weapon X procedure in "X2," but here its full power - and horror - is fully unveiled. As Logan lies in a water-filled plexiglass tank the size of a lidless coffin, robotic arms that taper into foot-long needles spin at high speeds, entering his body, bonding his bones to the adamantium. Wolverine has suffered and survived gunshots, knife wounds, car crashes, executions and explosions - but he's never suffered like this.

Wolverine emerges from the ordeal to face yet another betrayal and an epic showdown with Victor and with the next generation of Stryker's military experiments. Undeterred by Logan's escape from Alkali Lake as the now indestructible Wolverine, Stryker has abducted mutants to fulfill his twisted mandate of turning them into weapons. The unwilling participants in this work are teenagers Scott Summers (Tim Pocock) and Emma Frost (Tahyna Tozzi). Scott, who can emit a powerful beam from his eyes, grows up to be Cyclops, a leader of the X-Men; Emma, another major figure in X-Men comics lore, is telepathic and possesses a diamond-like skin that is indestructible.

Together, the mutants face off against an enemy who has sworn to see them destroyed, in a battle - a revolution - that will set the course of the epic war that lies ahead.

DVD Art For The Land That Time Forgot

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: The Asylum / Avery Guerra

I can remember way back in 1974 when the first commercials for "The Land That Time Forgot" aired on television. (That shows you how old I am...) I vividly recall the images of the dinosaurs and the exploding volcano. I also remember thinking how 'real' the dinosaurs looked. Yeh, they were only hand puppets, come to find out, but you have to remember that for the 70s, it was pretty good looking effects wise. They didn't have 'high-fangled' computer graphics back then boys and girls.

Anyway, I remember the film fondly and so do a lot of people who grew up in my generation.

It should come as no surprise that when I learned that C. Thomas Howell, and The Asylum, were remaking the film, my eyes and ears perked up.

Well the remake of "The Land That Time Forgot" is in full production as we speak, and a lot of people are eager to see what kind of film it's going to be. Will it follow the story from the original film, or will it be a new interpretation of the Edgar Rice Burroughs story that was first published in 1918?

Very little on that subject has been released as of yet, but The Asylum has just released the DVD cover art for the movie.

Kinda looks like the poster for "Land of the Lost". The tag-line kinda sounds like it too.

Let's wait and see, before we pass any judgements on this one!

Two Brand New Posters For Jennifer Lynch's Hisss

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Venus Distributing / Avery Guerra / Hisss Official Web Site

Director Jennifer Lynch has learned that the best way to stir up a buzz about a movie is to take one of the sexiest actresses in India, namely Mallika Sherawat, and wrap her up in snakeskin.

Indeed there has been quite a bit of Internet hype about Lynch's film, "Hissss", ever since the first image of Sherawat, in her costume as the “Ichhadahari Nagin”, surfaced last October. Several articles have been written about the sexy Bollywood star, here grueling hours in makeup and the legend of the Nagin. If there are two things fanboys love it's monsters and sexy women, if you combine them both together, as is the case here, you have a venerable "slam-dunk" situation.

It looks like Lynch has found a distributor for "Hisss" in Venus, a company located in Mumbai. The company has very little release information for the film posted on it's website, but it can be assumed that they will be handling the international release of "Hisss." No dates or locations have been announced as of yet.

Venus has, however, produced two brand-new movie posters for "Hissss" in preparation for the release. (See Above And Below)

They have also released this very detailed synopsis:

The Curse of the Cobra Goddess - anytime man desecrates or violates the cobra, they are doomed to suffer the petrifying curse of the snake woman, of death and infertility. Only respect and worship can keep the population safe and the women fertile.

Over 4000 years ago the inhabitants of the Indus Valley sculpted the image of the shape shifting snake. These half cobras, half human creatures were said to inhabit an awesome, mysterious temple, made of material unknown to mankind, deep within the jungles, far, far away in the legendary spice forests of the Malabar Coast. Children grew up hearing about the story recounted to their grandfathers, by their forefathers about an ancestor, who had journeyed to the edge of the world, and came back to recount a frightening story about the Snake Goddess and her mate.... and from here the legend travelled across India, and the far east along the silk route - passed on from generation to generation for thousands of years until this day.

It is the year 2008, an American man, named George, packing high tech gear, and evil intentions, makes the arduous journey into the heart of the forbidden forest. He captures a male cobra the size of a large python when he's at his weakest, while mating. Little does he realize when they embark on testing this mysterious creature in their high-tech lab, what horror and destruction awaits him....

Deep in the jungles of Periyar, the camera snakes through the thick, wet undergrowth, and a woman emerges stark naked at the edge of a tribal village. She's beautiful, but has matted hair, bushy eyebrows and a body covered in mud. She observes a group of tribal women, sneaks into one of their huts, and later appears on the dirt road in clothes stolen from one of them. She has two raw crocodile eggs with her that she swallows whole, regurgitates the shells, and then licks her lips - her tongue is the forked tongue of a snake. She makes it to the nearest township and wanders into a slum where she's lured by two drunken men into their shack. They speak to her, but she seems lost and uncommunicative. They lose patience and pounce on her, tearing off her clothes. Before they know it the lower half of her elongates into a huge snake and wraps around one man. Then, huge fangs appear in her mouth, and in a split second she sinks them into the other man's neck. Her jaws dislocate and her mouth opens wide and she proceeds to swallow him as his friend with her tail coiled around him in a deadly embrace, watches his friend being eaten in horror.

Six days later the stink of rotting flesh intimates the neighbours, and soon after the local cops are on the scene where they find a blue rotting corpse, and a ball of shredded clothes, human hair, and a melted mobile. They immediately call their DSP, who's as perplexed as his cops, and finally the district SSP, Vikram Gupta arrives on the scene. Gupta and his forensics team cannot for the love of God figure out why the killer would stab someone in the neck and then inject him with cobra venom. And what's the deal with the shredded clothes, a melted mobile, burnt with acid, and all the hair on a man's head intact along with the hair follicles? Thus begins his quest for this mysterious killer who leaves a trail of bodies across India with stab wounds and injected with huge amounts of cobra venom.

The snake woman learns fast and rapidly changes her look, clothes and learns to deal with the human world. She tracks down the scientists, wrecks havoc at the animal testing facility, and rescues her mate. But it's too late and he dies in her arms after being subjected to biological testing for months and here begins her quest for vengeance with SSP Gupta hot on her trail. On the way, she encounters various humans and animals including cobras, chickens, cattle, dogs, elephants, camels and a mongoose.

What follows is a chase at breakneck speed, with horrifying deaths, narrow escapes and special effects never seen before in India, as Gupta's Clarice Starling chases down a beautiful sexy killer more dangerous, powerful and terrifying than Hannibal Lecter. This is India's Werewolf, Vampire, and Hannibal the Cannibal, who has an axe to grind with the villainous human race who has dared to desecrate her environment...

Wolverine News: Tempe Premiere Video And Other Odds And Ends

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Getty Images / WENN / Associated Press

Comic book and movie fans alike were treated to a very special event Monday night, when the Harkin's Theaters Tempe Marketplace, in Tempe, Arizona hosted the world premiere of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine."

All the stars from the film were on hand, including Hugh Jackman, who plays the films title character. Jackman, who obviously was playing to the crowd, and arrived at the event on a classic Harley-Davidson motorcycle, told the mass of excited fans, "I'm moving here. It's awesome!"

The suburban town of Tempe won the right to host the premiere in an online contest sponsored by the films distributor, 20th Century Fox. Fox was overwhelmed by the number of entries, and the fans in Tempe more than made their case heard, submitting more entries than any other city in America.

Ryan Reynolds told the AP that premiere locations should be put on the ballot more often.

"I think this is how they should do it from now on. I really do," says the actor, who plays Deadpool. "L.A. has had their fair share of Hollywood premieres. So has New York. This is the way to do it. You get to be interactive with the fans."

Jackman on how he almost walked away from the Wolverine character after "X-Men: The Last Stand "

Yes, indeed Jackman almost did hang up his claws after the last "X-Men" film, because he felt that the character hadn't been developed properly. Apparently Jackman felt so strongly about "Wolverine" that he had to be convinced by the film makers that his character would behave more like he does in the comic book in their new movie before he decided to reprise the role again.

Recently Jackman told reporters, "One thing I never felt we got with Wolverine that I really wanted to get is that berserker rage which is talked about in the comic books. "

"It felt like Wolverine had got a little soft by X-Men 3 and I wanted to take it back to that bad a** quality. He's tough, he's gruff, he's not politically correct - he doesn't say the right things. "

"There has to be complexity to this character. He's very tough but there's a lot of pain, history to his life that you find out about. It's not pretty. He's a flawed character. That's what I like about it, that's why I'm doing it for the fourth time or else I wouldn't."

Jackman also expanded on a little ritual he has before taping that helps him channel the rage he needs to play Wolverine.

Jackman explains, "It's surprisingly easy to find that inner rage. I do a little trick every morning. I stumbled upon this on X-Men 1. I had to get rid of my hairspray first thing in the morning but my wife was asleep and there was no hot water, it was the middle of Toronto winter."

"I turned the water on and was waiting and I got in and I couldn't make a noise. I don't know how it was running; it was that cold. "

"After 20 to 30 seconds I thought, 'This is exactly how Wolverine feels all the time.' It's that inner rage but you can't yell or do anything. "

"Every morning I do it. It's now a bit of a superstition."

Sequels anyone!

Director Gavin Hood is keen to make similar movies starring Ryan Reynold's alter-ego Deadpool and Liev Schreiber's Sabretooth.

He says, "There's the wonderful Liev who plays Victor. Ryan Reynolds too is extremely charismatic; both witty and he can combine action and humour. "

"The creators of these characters have all created characters that could all have their own origin stories. Hopefully fans will enjoy "Wolverine" and more will be made."

Just in case you weren't in Tempe for the premiere, here is a video of what you missed:

Brett Kelly Entertainment Breaks Into The Comic Book Biz

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Brett Kelly / Avery Guerra

You really have to give credit to Brett Kelly for doing everything in his power to resurrect the comic book character "The Scarab." Not only is he making a movie about the obscure hero that first appeared under the Nedor Comics label way back in 1945, now he has launched a line of comic books featuring "The Scarab" and several other characters from the comic.

Under his, Brett Kelly Entertainment label, the director, who pumps out films in mass, is presently producing four different comics based on "The Scarab". Two of the books feature the series title hero in both new adventures and reprints of the classic comics. There are also 'spin-off' books featuring both, "The Woman in Red", and "Jack of Spades."

Here is a list of the comics with a short synopsis for each:

GOLDEN AGE CLASSICS!

Reprints featuring key characters in our comics and in the SCARAB feature film!

THE SCARAB: GOLDEN AGE CLASSICS

Classic rare tales of the Nedor Comics hero "The Scarab" also features a sneak peek at the Scarab movie!

THE WOMAN IN RED: GOLDEN AGE CLASSICS

Thrill to the adventures of the character that is often referred to as the First female superhero! Also contains a sneak peek at the W.I.R character from the Scarab feature film! THREE ISSUE MINI-SERIES

JACK OF SPADES

Organized crime has someone new to deal with!. JACK OF SPADES is a ruthless vigilante with a personal stake in making sure that crime pays- IN SPADES!

Here is some historical info on "The Scarab" from Wikipedia:

The Scarab was the secret identity of Egyptologist Peter Ward. Ward was actually the reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian high priest; by rubbing his magic scarab ring Ward would instantly transform into the super-powerful Scarab.

Alan Moore revived the Scarab, along with many other Nedor Comics characters that had entered the public domain, for his Tom Strong series. In Tom Strong #12 (June 2001), the Scarab was revealed to have been one of the members of SMASH that had been placed in suspended animation after an alien invasion from the moon in 1969. Awakened 30 years later, the Scarab joined his former comrades in the fight against the alien. SMASH disbanded shortly thereafter, but reformed three years later. The Scarab is a member of the reformed group.

In the Terra Obscura spin-off series, the Scarab allows himself to be bonded with the ancient Egyptian god Thoth in order to control one-time superhero Mystico (who is himself bonded with the god Seth).

You have to wonder how much of a market there will be for these "Scarab" titles? If Kelly fails to re-ignite interest in the character, it won't be from lack of devotion. Not many people would invest this much time and effort into something that they don't truly love. Maybe the time is right for the re-birth of "The Scarab", people will always need heroes, especially in this world that is quickly turning upside down.

In "Clash of the Titans," the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Sam Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Ralph Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Liam Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.

Leading the international cast is Australian actor Sam Worthington as Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus, king of the gods. Worthington will next be seen in this summer's "Terminator Salvation." Liam Neeson takes on the role of the mighty Zeus, and Ralph Fiennes plays the role of Hades, god of the underworld, who feeds on human fear. Rounding out the cast is Gemma Arterton ("Quantum of Solace") as Io, Perseus' mysterious spiritual guide throughout his journey; Mads Mikkelsen ("Casino Royale") as Draco, who takes up his sword to join Perseus' quest; Jason Flemyng ("The Curious Case of Benjamin Button") as Acrisius, a one-time king-turned-hideous beast; and Alexa Davalos ("Defiance") as Andromeda, a princess doomed to lose her life if Perseus does not succeed.

Based on the 1981 film of the same name, written by the late Beverley Cross, "Clash of the Titans" is directed by Louis Leterrier from a screenplay by Phil Hay & Matt Manfredi ("Aeon Flux"), story by Travis Beacham ("Dog Days of Summer") and Hay & Manfredi. The film is produced by Basil Iwanyk, who produced the drama "We Are Marshall" for Warner Bros. Pictures, and Kevin De La Noy, who last served as an executive producer on the studio's blockbuster "The Dark Knight." The executive producers are Academy Award® winner Richard D. Zanuck ("Driving Miss Daisy"), who most recently collaborated with Warner Bros. on the comedy hit "Yes Man," and Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and William Fay, who have teamed with the studio on such hits as "The Dark Knight" and "300."

The behind-the-scenes team creating this mythical spectacle includes director of photography Peter Menzies, Jr. ("The Incredible Hulk"); production designer Martin Laing ("Terminator Salvation"); editor Vincent Tabaillon ("The Incredible Hulk"); Academy Award®-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming ("Topsy-Turvy," "The Dark Knight"); Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Nick Davis ("The Dark Knight"); Oscar®-nominated prosthetics supervisor Conor O'Sullivan ("The Dark Knight," "Saving Private Ryan"); Academy Award®-winning special effects and animatronics supervisor Neil Corbould ("Gladiator"); and Academy Award®-winning makeup and hair designer Jenny Shircore ("Elizabeth").

"Clash of the Titans" will begin filming in studios outside London and will later shoot in various locations in Wales and in the Spanish Canary Islands, predominantly on Tenerife, off the coast of Africa. Further aerial work is set to take place in the diverse locales of Ethiopia and Iceland.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Legendary Pictures, "Clash of the Titans," to be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Sci Fi Announces Memorial Day Land Of The Lost Marathon And Other Summer Programing

Source: NBC / Universal

Summer Holidays Feature "Land of the Lost" Memorial Day Marathon and the July 4th Weekend "Twilight Zone" Marathon

And on July 7, SCI FI Becomes...Syfy

After kicking off with a Memorial Day "Land of the Lost" marathon, SCI FI blasts into Summer '09 with a wealth of original programming from the series premiere of "Warehouse 13" and new episodes of "Eureka" (on its new night Fridays at 9PM beginning July 10th) and "Ghost Hunters" to Saturday night movies showcasing stars such as Jason Gedrick, James Marsters and Peta Wilson.

Summer on SCI FI also includes the popular July 4th weekend "Twilight Zone" marathon and, on July 7, SCI FI becomes Syfy.

SUMMER SCRIPTED SERIES

"Warehouse 13" - Premieres Tuesday, July 7, with two-hour pilot from 9-11PM (ET/PT) - Two Secret Service agents find themselves abruptly transferred to a massive, top-secret storage facility in windswept South Dakota which houses every strange artifact, mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever collected by the U.S. government. The Warehouse's caretaker Artie (Saul Rubinek) charges Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanne Kelly) with chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to control the warehouse itself. CCH Pounder guest-stars as Artie's boss Mrs. Federic, along with Allison Scagliotti as Claudia Donovan, a young, hip, brilliant techno-wiz.

The 13-episode series (including the two-hour pilot) is produced for SCI FI by Universal Cable Productions. It is executive produced by Jack Kenny (The Book of Daniel) who also serves as showrunner. David Simkins (Dresden Files) is executive producer; Jace Alexander (Burn Notice, Rescue Me) is co-executive producer and director of the pilot; and Stephen Surjik (Monk, Burn Notice) is producer/director of the series.

"Eureka" -- Returns with 10 new episodes beginning Friday, July 10, at 9PM (ET/PT) Season 3.5 picks up where "Eureka" left off at the mid-season cliffhanger with Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson) being removed from his job as Eureka's sheriff and Allison (Salli Richardson-Whitfield) announcing that she is expecting her recently-deceased husband's baby.

Carter is also confronted by some challenging decisions on the home front where his daughter Zoe (Jordan Hinson) is concerned and encounters a new love interest with the arrival of Dr. Tess Fontana (guest star Jaime Rae Newman) who will supervise the re-opening of Global Dynamics' infamous 'Section 5.'

"Eureka" was the most watched scripted series on SCI FI in 2008 delivering its best performance to-date. The first half of the 3rd season averaged 3 million viewers per week. Co-creator Jaime Paglia and Charlie Craig (The X Files, Brimstone) and Thania St. John are Executive Producers. "Eureka" is produced by Universal Cable Productions.

SUMMER REALITY SERIES

"Ghost Hunters International" - Returns Wednesday, July 8 at 9PM -- A spin-off of SCI FI's popular "Ghost Hunters" series, "Ghost Hunters International" features a squad of real-life "ghost-busters" - ordinary people who investigate and attempt to debunk claims of otherworldly activity. This summer the team travels to Austria, Ireland, Italy, Chile, Argentina and the Czech Republic in pursuit of the truth behind bizarre supernatural claims. The first six episodes of season two will air this summer with additional episodes continuing in 2010.

"Ghost Hunters International" earned the best-ever first season for a reality series of the network, averaging a 1.7 HH rating and 2.3 million total viewers.

"Ghost Hunters" - Returns Wednesday, August 19, at 9PM (ET/PT) - Plumbers by day, Ghost Hunters by night, Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson head up TAPS (The Atlantic Paranormal Society), a close-knit organization of volunteer paranormal researchers - ordinary people who investigate and attempt to debunk claims of otherworldly activity. In their investigations all over the U.S. and Europe, these self-proclaimed skeptics have managed to expose some of the most frighteningly compelling evidence of paranormal phenomenon ever seen on television! Throughout its run, "Ghost Hunters" has featured speaking entities, mysteriously moving furniture, and ghostly visages and a healthy dose of squabbling within the investigating team. Being scared has never been so much fun!

Enjoying record-high ratings throughout its run since 2004, "Ghost Hunters" remains one of cable's hottest shows, with an average of more than 3 million viewers tuning in so far during season 5 (premiered March 11, 2009). "Ghost Hunters," is produced in association with Craig Piligian's Pilgrim Films and Television (Dirty Jibs, The Ultimate Fighter, In Harm's Way). Piligian and Thomas Thayer, along with Rob Katz and Alan David, serve as executive producers.

SUMMER MOVIES

"Malibu Shark Attack," starring Peta Wilson - An underwater earthquake generates a tsunami that strikes Malibu and brings a hunting pack of prehistoric-looking goblin sharks to the surface. Although the beach is evacuated before the big wave strikes, a group of lifeguards and a crew of construction workers are stranded in the high water and have to fight the sharks to get to dry land.

"High Plains Invaders," starring James Marsters - In the early 20th century, a small western mining town is invaded by giant insectoid alien creatures whose only mission is to mine uranium to fuel their spaceship - but they'll kill anyone or anything that gets in their way. After they devastate the town, it's up to a retired outlaw to lead a small group of survivors in fighting thing "bugs."

"Hellhounds," directed by Rick Schroeder - After his bride is poisoned at their wedding, a young Greek warrior risks a journey to Hades to rescue her from the God of the Underworld and bring her back to life. What he doesn't know is that the best friend who accompanies him is the man who killed her in a jealous rage.

"Sand Serpents," starring Jason Gedrick - At an isolated Taliban outpost in Afghanistan, a small platoon of US soldiers faces a danger far greater than fanatical rebels - giant worm-like creatures that come up through the sand and devour everything in their path. Their inexperienced lieutenant has to lead them across the treacherous desert to a rendezvous point where an army helicopter will pick them up - but not all of them are going to make it.

SUMMER MARATHONS

A Memorial Day "Land of the Lost" marathon airs from 8AM-4AM (ET/PT), keyed to the theatrical release of "Land of the Lost," based on the 1970s television cult classic. Starring Will Ferrell, Anna Friel and Danny McBride, the Universal movie opens nationwide on June 5th.

For Independence Day, SCI FI presents its annual "Twilight Zone" marathon, running from Thursday, July 2, through Saturday, July 4, featuring episodes from the 1980s version of the series and the classic 1960s show.

Schwarzenegger Confirms Terminator Salvation Appearance But Only In Stock Footage And CGI

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: WENN

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has finally come clean about his upcoming appearance in "Terminator Salvation." Speculation has been swirling that the actor-turned-politician would be reprising the role that shot him to international stardom in 1984, ever since he was spotted on the set of the new film by paparazzi last year.

Schwarzenegger has assured the people of California, that his appearance in the much anticipated film didn't take one second of time away from his duties as governor. How did the Governator pull it off? His appearance in the film will be in the form of stock footage from the fist two "Terminator" films spliced in and CGI renderings.

Schwarzenegger explains to Entertainment Weekly, "I made it very clear that I don't have the time to do the movie. I said that I would be willing to be in the movie if they get the technology together, and so they are working on that right now."

"They would basically take technology out of "Terminator I", and use that walk of mine and somehow bring it in (to the new film). It's just a brief scene."

When I was searching for a photo for this article, I stumbled upon the above image, which is supposed to be a CGI rendering of Schwarzenegger that was developed for "Terminator Salvation." I don't know if it's real or not, but it's pretty cool all the same.

Mothra Song Mosura No Uta Used As Inspiration For Soy Sauce Add

Source: ADi

ADi, a Portland-based computer animation company, has provided the unique animation for a commercial for GOLIGHTLY Films and Yamasa Soy Sauce using ideas and themes from the Japanese "Mothra" song, Mosura No Uta. The 30 second commercial, animated by ADi and written, produced, directed and filmed by GOLIGHTLY Films, will be broadcast locally on KGW TV, and in Japan on Fuji TV. The song, which gained popularity in the U.S. on YouTube, is based on a fictional monster who is both an ally and adversary of Godzilla. Yamasa USA is headquartered in Salem, Oregon.

ADi's designers brought to life a virtual world with a pop-up book appearance in a lily-pond setting. "We had a blast on this project," commented Kate Ertmann, President and Executive Producer at ADi. "We wanted to come up with a visual approach that would stand out and get noticed right away. We started by developing storyboards with the client and moving to the different elements of the animation. The initial concept from GOLIGHTLY Films and Yamasa was essentially playing off the Mothra Song theme, where Mothra's fairies invoke Mothra to come and help them. We also wanted to use bright, saturated colors and have a playful feel, consistent with Yamasa marketing. Exploring these concepts and creating the pop-up storybook world allowed us to give it 3D feel, but keep the costs lower than a fully realized 3D world." Visit www.Youtube.com to see more of the style of the Mothra song.

"We very much enjoyed working with ADi to develop this innovative and creative spot for Yamasa Soy Sauce," stated Director/DP Kenneth Luba of GOLIGHTLY Films. "Not only were they able to bring my vision to life and are extremely talented in animation design, but they also kept the commercial on track and on budget. Their experience in project development ensured the commercial was created in stages where any changes we needed were able to be done with as little financial impact as possible. Our client, Yamasa USA, was extremely pleased with the outcome."

The commercial was shot using a green screen, and the characters were then placed in a colorful virtual world. ADi's art director, Kalina Torino, drew and painted all the images and then the 3D technical staff applied the images to a virtual 3D set complete with rigging, clouds and a dragonfly hanging by strings. The various elements were animated and video layers added in sections on different plates. The three central singing characters were shot on one plate, the soy sauce bottles on another and the Yamasa man on yet another, all scaled and overlapped to appear as though they are in the same world. To view the commercial, see below:

An Early Effects Shot From Transmorphers The Fall Of Man

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Paul Bales / Avery Guerra

With a brand-new "Transformers" movie coming out this summer, it should be expected that The Asylum would be coming out with their own film 'inspired by' the big-budget Hollywood epic, and indeed they are. The film entitled "Transmorphers: Fall of Man" features everything you would expect, robots that change shape and the like.

Unlike the upcoming "Transformers" movie, "Transmorphers: Fall of Man" is a prequel. The the original "Transmorphers" (2007), takes place 300 years in the future and follows a human rebellion against a race of alien robots who have enslaved the Earth."

"Transmorphers: Fall of Man" takes place in modern times, and follows the story of when the alien robots first land on Earth. The invasion forces mankind underground and the rebellion is formed.

The film stars one of my favorite actors, Bruce Boxleitner, who was the shit on "Babylon 5."

The Asylum was cool enough to send us an early effects shot from the film. In the clip a giant robot is seen firing on a fleeing pick-up truck. A pretty cool sequence!

Fans of giant robot movies and animation may want to give "Transmorphers: Fall of Man" a look!

The Bloody Rage Of Bigfoot - Bigfoot Revealed!

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: James Baack / Avery Guerra

Director James Baack has been really good about keeping the readers of Monster Island News updated on "The Bloody Rage Of Bigfoot", a film that the fans really seem to dig and cryptozoologists seem to loath.

Regardless of which side of the fence you sit, the film certainly has spawned a great deal of interest. Baack is promising a Bigfoot horror movie like no other.

Baack describes his film this way, "At this point, the film is sizing up to be kind of a mixture of 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre', 'Predator', and 'The Exorcist' all thrown into a blender and poured into a skull shaped mug."

That sounds like a pretty violent brew to pour into one cup.

Today Baack has sent us, yet another photo of the Bigfoot in his film. The director has titled the photo, "the first glimpse of Bigfoot." I can only assume that means it is the first time that the audience gets to see the monster in the film.

So far there has only been one other photo released of Baack's Bigfoot, a curious shot that seems to show "Godzilla-like" spines on the monster. Reportedly there is a story behind the mysterious formation, but so far nobody is talking.

Looks like we will have to wait to see the film to find out all the details.
