Getting Grumpy: VFX In Land Of The Lost

Source: Universal / Getty Images For the Land of the Lost series, the Kroffts created 40 minutes of stop-action dinosaur animation that was repurposed over the three-year run and used many times. That was the first time video and stop-motion were combined and used on television. Much to the pride of this team, the film is also using groundbreaking technology to create visual effects; as always, photorealism is the goal. “This is not ‘a routine expedition’ for us in VFX,” puns Oscar®-winning VFX supervisor Bill Westenhofer. “We are responsible for many things in this film…from creating key characters like dinosaurs Grumpy and Alice to extending the sets and Sleestak armies.” Naturally, Westenhofer and his team at Rhythm & Hues were heavily influenced by Jurassic Park and the benchmarks set 16 years ago for dinosaur design. With the tools they had in front of them, however, they were determined to take the Land of the Lost dinosaurs to a whole new level…especially for Marshall’s

The Doctors New Traveling Companion Will Be Karen Gillan

Source: BBC The BBC today revealed that the companion for the forthcoming series of Doctor Who will be Karen Gillan. Twenty-one-year-old Gillan will star alongside new Time Lord, Matt Smith, when the smash hit drama returns to BBC One in spring 2010. With filming due to begin this summer, Gillan beat off dozens of hopefuls to land one of television's most coveted roles. Gillan said: "I am absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion. The show is such a massive phenomenon that I can't quite believe I am going to be a part of it. "Matt Smith is an incredible actor and it is going to be so much fun to act alongside him – I just can't wait to get started!" Lead writer and Executive Producer, Steven Moffat, added: "We saw some amazing actresses for this part, but when Karen came through the door the game was up. Funny, and clever, and gorgeous, and sexy. Or Scottish, which is the quick way of saying it. A generation o

New Photos From Gathering Of Heroes: Legend Of The Seven Swords

Written By: Ken Hulsey Source: Avery Guerra It has been a few months since we heard anything about Mark Steven Grove and Jon Firestone's cool looking fantasy film, "Gathering of Heroes: Legend of the Seven Swords". Apparently the film makers are very busy working on the project and aren't in any hurry to finish the film, reportedly wanting to get everything 'just right' before releasing it. The duo has, however, just released a brand new set of movie stills, which Avery Guerra was able to provide for us. Since it has been a while since we last talked about "Gathering of Heroes", here is the synopsis again, followed by the new photos: In the mystical realm of Ryntia, the forces of the underworld are aligning to unleash a plague of evil upon the surface. The deadly bat-like Blood Reavers, the Saurian Maurauders, the Orcish Warmongers and the feline Shadow-cat mercenaries have pledged their respective clans to the service of Bre’Gwen, queen of the

Oklahoma Bigfoot Researchers Come Home With Prints And Personal Encounters

Written By: Ken Hulsey Source: Tulsa World D.W. Lee, director of the Mid-America Bigfoot Research Center, and his research team emerged from the woods of southeastern Oklahoma this past weekend with a print cast and a number of personal experiences to ponder over. Indeed Lee's expedition seemed more like an episode of "Ghost Hunters" than a typical crypto search. While trekking through the woods the team spotted a pair of large upright walking creatures with their night-vision gear. Moments later the team was pelted with rocks, presumably thrown by the creatures. "A lot of people, it doesn't really dawn on them when rocks land near them" that Bigfoot could be responsible, Lee said. The true prize find of the expedition was not a bunch of bruises caused by projectiles hurled by Bigfoot, however, but a 15 3/4 inch cast made from a set of tracks discovered some 5 miles deep in the wilderness. "The toes were clearly visible on the cast after it was l

The Many Looks Of Scarlet Salem - Blond Or Redhead?

Written By: Ken Hulsey Source: Scarlet Salem Photo Credit: Randall Photography I have taken the time before to point out the fact that actress and model, Scarlet Salem, is a chameleon. You can honestly set out a batch of her photos and ask anyone if they are the same girl? I'm willing to bet that most people wouldn't be able to tell. She has that many different looks. Case in point are her two latest publicity photos. In one she is a redhead and in the other she is a blond. I swear they are the same model. Take the time to look closely.....I'm sure you won't mind. Tennant's Doctor Making The Move From TV To Big Screen

Written By: Ken Hulsey Source: WENN It seems that David Tennant is making sure that his incarnation of The Doctor will continue on despite his leaving the popular UK television series. It appears that the actors decision to leave the show last year may have just been an attempt to clear his schedule so he could star in a series of Doctor Who movies. Hot on the heels of the news that Tennant's Doctor would be making a special appearance on the spin-off series, "The Sarah Jane Adventures", comes a report from Britain's Daily Express stating that the actor is well into negotiations to star in a movie based on the "Doctor Who" television series. Their unnamed source explains, "The script is still in the early stages but David wants to be in the film. There have already been discussions and David needs to feel the story is right but right now things are looking very positive." "He understandably wants to go off and do different roles but he st

The First Look At Chris Ray's Megaconda

Written By: Ken Hulsey Sources: Chris Ray / Avery Guerra Man, you gotta wonder what's going on in the independent monster movie bizz? Film makers are churning em faster and faster. There's films about Mega Sharks, Giant Octopuses, Dinocrocs, Supergators, Raging Sasquatches, hot Indian chicks turning into snakes, and now thanks to Chris Ray, we have "Megaconda." It is clear that the new motto is "bigger is better." You have The Asylum with their Mega Shark, who is big enough to chew up the Golden Gate Bridge paired against a Giant Octopus that can swallow a nuclear submarine whole without having to chew. God only knows how big "Megaconda" is going to be? I have a feeling that it will make the snake in "D-War" look like fish bait. Ray has just finished principal photography on his giant snake flick. The production has now turned to the post and effects stage. The director was good enough to send us a batch of photos, of course, there ar

Silent But Deadly Productions Presents - Silly But Delusional

Written By: Ken Hulsey Source: Silent But Deadly Productions (Click HERE To View "Silly But Delusional") Well, now that small independent productions are all the rage now, I figured that I would continue to ride the wave....for as long it lasts. Today I have another little film made on a shoe-string budget. This time it isn't a film made with toy Godzilla figures or a guy in monkey suite scaring a bunch of kids. I thought that it would be nice to see something whimsical.....something light hearted and silly. The first episode of Silent But Deadly's series, entitled "Silly But Delusional" made it's debut last night on the Numa Network. For those of you not familiar with SBD, it is an independent all-female production company founded by Rachel Grubb and Brooke Lemke. The two young actresses founded the company in hopes of providing talented woman with an opportunity to showcase their acting and movie making skills. "Silly But Delusional" sta

Hey Kids! It's Ultraman......Sorta

Written By: Ken Hulsey Sources: Jared Foust / Avery Guerra With a $70 zombie movie making all the news at Cannes, it is only fitting that I spotlight another, made from the money in my pocket, production entitled "Ultaman Sorta". As many of you know, we here at Monster Island News, love low budget, independent, productions. Come to think of it. With this "Colin" movie making headlines, and Hollywood and overseas studios foaming at the mouth to make their own version of it, many of the films that I have written about may be next. Is it possible that we are trend-setters here. Are low-budget films the next "big thing"? Anyway..... As you may have guessed, "Ultraman Sorta" is film maker Jared Foust's do-it-yourself homage to the Japanese super hero, Ultraman. Now, when I say do it yourself, I mean Jared did the whole thing himself. He wrote the story, directed it, starred in it, edited it, and did all the visual effects for it. The only th

Researcher Hopes Flooding Will Flush Out The Yowie

Written By: Ken Hulsey Sources: All News Web / The Morning Starr Just about everyone has heard about America's Bigfoot, Canada's Sasquatch, Russia's Alma and Nepal's Yeti, but these aren't the only upright walking harry cryptids out there. Australia has one of their own, called the Yowie, and the man who has devoted his life to tracking it believes strong evidence to prove it's existence may be close at hand. Tim the "Yowie Man" has set up camp in the village of Springbrook, Queensland (Eastern Australia) in hopes that the recent torrential rains and flooding in the area will flush out the elusive creature. “Historical records indicate that there is a direct correlation between significant rain events in this part of Queensland and the sightings of Australia’s fabled Yowie,” the researcher explains. He also adds “Rain to the extent experienced up here in the last week would make a large hairy bipedal hominid creature very uncomfortable and poten

The Doctor Makes A Surprise Appearance On The Sarah Jane Adventures

Source: BBC Doctor Who fans are in for a treat this Autumn as David Tennant makes a special appearance as The Doctor in CBBC's hit drama series The Sarah Jane Adventures with a starring role across two episodes. Investigative journalist Sarah Jane Smith, one-time companion to that strange wanderer in time and space known as The Doctor, is reunited with her old friend as The Sarah Jane Adventures is back for a third series of alien-busting adventures on CBBC this September. Elisabeth Sladen, who plays Sarah Jane, says: "When I heard the news that David was going to be joining us I was absolutely over the moon. Not only has it made my day but it will also make the viewers' day. "It's fantastic news that Sarah Jane is going to spend some time working with The Doctor again and is testament to just how successful this CBBC series is." Russell T Davies, Executive Producer of The Sarah Jane Adventures, adds: "Viewers thought they may have to wait until No

Behind The Scenes Photos From Norman England's It's All Good

(Photo Caption: Norman England on the set of 'It's All Good', "Me demonstrating once again that I am never at a loss for words!") Written By: Ken Hulsey Source: Norman England Earlier this month director Norman England completed a two day shoot on his latest sci fi film project, "It's All Good." Filming took place in the city of Tokorozawa, Japan, in a house designed for use by film and television productions. Assisting England on the set were Japanese director and producer, Takeshi Yagi, known for his work on the "Ultraman" TV series and "Tokyo Gore Police" director Yoshihiro Nishimura. Having the two veterans of the Japanese film industry on hand proved to be invaluable to England, who was beginning to think that he had bitten off more than he could chew in wrangling all the facets of the production just prior to shooting. In the end, England was more than pleased with the shoot, his staff and his cast. England hasn't

Heat Up Your Memorial Day Weekend With A Little Scarlet Salem

Written By: Ken Hulsey Photo Credits: Randall Photography Everyone knows if you want to attract more visitors to your website, then you need to post photos of hot babes. Well, I dare you to find anyone hotter than Scarlet Salem. The relative newcomer has begun to attract a lot of attention as of late. Scarlet's future as a model and actress seems to be on track for certain success. After starring in one film in 2007, and three in 2008, this year her dance card was filled up by a total of nine films including "Terror Overload", "Killer Biker Chicks" and "Night on Has Been Mountain." The actress will some begin working on yet another film, "Frozen", in the upcoming months. MIN readers may be thinking that I am developing some sort of "thing" for Minnesota girls, after this post, and yesterdays article about another "Land of 10000 Lakes" beauty Rachel Grubb . If I am developing such a fascination.....who could blame me?
