Film maker Frank Ladner has produced his own take on 'reality' horror with 'Hickory Never Bleeds' a mockumentary about how the residents of a small southern town deal with an alleged alien infestation in the nearby woods. Just like 'The Troll Hunter', 'District 9', 'Monsters', 'The Blair Witch Project' and Charles B. Pierce's 1972 classic 'The Legend of Boggy Creek' 'Hickory' focuses more on the people experiencing the events than the actual events themselves. Taking a page out of Piece's playbook Ladner opted to use the local residents of Poplarville, MS (Mark Forte, Torrey Harriel, James “Sonny” Howard) instead of actual trained actors in hopes of producing a more realistic feel. This tactic worked superbly for Piece on 'Boggy Creek' wherein the resident's of Fouke, AR played themselves and conveyed truly frightening performances. Though the characters in this film didn't actually experience the events in question they were given limited information to help convey the feeling of genuine confusion and fear.
This time around it's not Witches, Trolls, or even Sasquatch that are lurking outside the fictitious town of Farr, instead it's a group of alien robots that are providing the bumps in the night. Again, like 'Boggy Creek', the local residents form a mulisha to get to the bottom of things.
Fearing an unseen threat in their woods, and facing ridicule by the local media, the small town of Farr appoints a makeshift “Monster Defense Team” to investigate and remedy the bizarre situation.
This sci-fi mockumentary film follows the efforts of the team’s individual members, while allowing the quirky town residents to share their theories on what’s lurking in the woods, and what they think should be done about it.
