Edgar Wright returning to Kolchak The Night Stalker with Johnny Depp?

Image
From Digital Spy Edgar Wright could be returning to his Kolchak: The Night Stalker project. The filmmaker will pick up the Johnny Depp-starring film to replace Ant-Man, according to Deadline. The 1970s television series starred Darren McGavin as Carl Kolchak, a tabloid reporter who is frequently drawn into supernatural adventures. It is seen as a precursor to The X-Files, and experienced a revival in the 2000s as a series and comic book. Depp will take on the title role. Wright recently exited Marvel Studios' Ant-Man after developing the film since 2006. He is believed to have departed due a disagreement with the studio over script rewrites. READ MORE

Gareth Edwards Scores Godzilla 2, 3 ... and Star Wars?!!

Image
From Bloody Disgusting Monsters director Gareth Edwards is now the most monstrous filmmaker in Hollywood. In this article announcing that he’ll be getting behind the camera for one of three Star Wars spinoffs(!), they reveal that Edwards will be returning to direct not one, but two Godzilla sequels. The site explains that while story ideas exist for the two Godzilla sequels, the Godzilla 2 project is still in early development and does not even have a script. But they are clear that Edwards is attached to direct both. Produced by Legendary Pictures and released by Warner Bros., the monster movie reboot earned an impressive $93.2 million at the domestic box office this weekend. It also opened in most overseas markets, which added up to over $103 million, says Box Office Mojo. READ MORE From The Hollywood Reporter Edwards is attached to direct one of the Star Wars spinoff films, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Gary Whitta (Book of Eli) is writing the script for

GODZILLA: The Return Of The King, And The Good, Old-Fashioned Monster Movie

Image
Written By: Ken Hulsey As I left the Cinemark 16 Theater at the Victor Valley Mall this evening I knew that I had just about everything I needed to write this review of Gareth Edwards' "Godzilla" swirling around in my head just waiting to explode. I honestly hadn't had that much fun at the movies in years. After seeing films that were nothing more than action with no substance, that fell way short of their potential, it was so refreshing to see a film that was both a rocking good time and a great movie. As I walked across the parking lot to my car I was almost in a state of euphoria, not because I had just seen my favorite monster portrayed in all the glory of a real, living, breathing creature who kicked ass in every way "Godzilla" is supposed to, well not entirely anyway, but because I had just seen the rebirth of the good, old-fashioned monster movie. As many of you have already read numerous reviews of this movie by now, I want to give credit to man

Godzilla's Legal Defenders

Image
by Armand Vaquer Above, former Toho-L.A. General Manager Masaharu Ina and Armand at the Godzilla statue in Hibiya in February. The good working relationship between fan groups and Toho began under Ina's tenure as general manager.   Here's a story that fans of Godzilla are familiar with. Or should be. The article from the Japan Times is on the team of lawyers that Toho Co., Ltd. enlists to protect the Godzilla (and related creatures) trademark against bootleggers and companies who try to use Godzilla's image in advertising and other unauthorized ventures. The article begins with: LOS ANGELES – He spews radioactive fire, razes cities and pummels creatures from Earth and beyond, but even Godzilla needs a good lawyer sometimes. After all, you don’t survive 60 years in the movie business without taking some fights to court.  For decades, attorneys acting on behalf of Godzilla’s owners, Tokyo-based Toho Co., have amassed a string of victories, fighting counter

Roberto Orci to Direct ‘Star Trek 3′

Image
From Variety After weeks of rumblings that he was the frontrunner, sources have told Variety that Skydance and Paramount have tapped Roberto Orci to direct Paramount and Skydance’s “ Star Trek 3.” Orci is currently writing the story with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay and had been campaigning to replace J.J. Abrams as director for some time. Abrams is busy with directing the next installment of the “ Star Wars ” franchise and will only be producing this pic. Par, Skydance and his reps had no comment. Plot details are unknown but the cast, which includes Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, are expected to return. J.J. Abrams will produce along with his producing partner Bryan Burke and Skydance’s David Ellison. The news comes on the heals of Orci and long-time directing partner Alex Kurtzman going their separate ways on future film-making endeavors (although their TV production company is staying intact). "Godzilla" and The Critics

Image
by Armand Vaquer Above, "the King's" statue in Hibiya. Photo by Armand Vaquer. Comic Book Movie.com has snips of the "first wave" of reviews of the Legendary Pictures/Warner Bros. Godzilla . For the most part, the critic reviews are generally favorable to the movie with the biggest kudos going to the cinematography, the monsters and the movie's ending. Most are saying that Godzilla put back the "awe" in "awesome" and that the film will satisfy the monster fans. In a nutshell: "It delivers!" On the negative side, the consensus among critics are that the characters aren't "fleshed out" as well as they could be or that they are superficial. Well, who goes to monster movies for fully fleshed-out characters? The Godzilla movie with the best-developed characters of all has to be the 1954 original. Still, this Godzilla is a "marked improvement" over the 1998 Sony/TriStar Godzilla . What hur

Chewbacca Photo Bombs Disney's CEO In Selfie From Star Wars Set

Image
From Cinema Blend Laugh it up, fuzzball. You just might be part of a famous "selfie," if the Star Wars social media network is to be believed. The human in the above shot is Bob Iger, the current chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company. Which means when he says he’d like to be part of a photograph with Chewbacca, old "Mystery Box" maestro J.J. Abrams has to relent and let an image be posted to the official Star Wars Instagram page. The pic was posted on May 4, known around the globe as Star Wars Day because of the clever turn of phrase, "May the Fourth be with you." What we don’t know, for certain, is whether that’s actually Chewbacca star Peter Mayhew in the famous costume as he photo-bombs Bob Iger. After all, we know that Mayhew is in London for the start of the Star Wars: Episode VII shoot. He was in the table-read photograph seen ‘round the world. But it could be any tall extra in the Iger shot. If I had to bet, I’d say it’s Mayhew. Su
