At its best, Star Trek embraced the 60’s social revolution.

Image
From Cult of Whatever Fifty years ago “The Cage” was first screen to NBC executives, in the hopes that it would be picked up as the first episode for a new science-fiction show called “Star Trek.” The one-hour pilot—which was not seen by a wide audience until it was inserted as “historical footage” in The Original Series’ only two-part episode, The Menagerie—looks very different from the show that eventually made it to air from 1966-1969. See Also: Star Trek - The Trouble With Tribbles - Retro Style Lobby Card Print Originally, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry wanted a cerebral show, that only accentuated the thinking with a few action scenes. NBC was unimpressed however, but not so much as to outright reject the whole premise. Instead they made the very rare decision to order a second pilot. Of all people, you can thank Lucille Ball for Star Trek getting a second chance; the most famous female actor in TV history was a fan of the concept, and personally like Gene Roddenberry

Hayden Christensen Rumoured For Star Wars 8

But it comes with a word of warning: “This is a rumor I raise an eyebrow at incredulously.” Of course, Hayden Christensen became famous for his rather wooden performance as Anakin Skywalker – the young Jedi who would eventually become Darth Vader. And by the end of the prequel trilogy, he even got the chance to suit up i

The Future of Monster Movies Looks A Lot Like Its Past

Image
From Movie Cheat Sheet The film industry has been churning out creature features for as long as its been around. There’s something about a monster tearing through downtown Manhattan that packs people into theaters, transcending decades and generations. The filmgoers of 1933’s King Kong got the same pleasure from that movie as the people who caught Pacific Rim on opening weekend, with the only difference being the massive leaps in CGI and special effects. There’s a visceral appeal to seeing humanity’s pride get toppled by that rare creature above us on the food chain, and in a nutshell, that is what we get out of the genre. See Also: Monster Zero - Godzilla, Rodan, King Ghidorah - Retro Style Lobby Card Print What’s perhaps most interesting about all this is the fact that amidst all the growth and change of Hollywood, monster movies have largely remained the same spanning a 50 plus year tradition. Star Wars 7 Character Details Revealed In Trading Cards

The film, in which her performance could garner her awards consideration later this year, was shot between "Ult

Blade Runner 2 Will Take Care Of The Original's Biggest Mystery

Image
From Cinema Blend Fans of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner have spent years discussing and debating one particular mystery: is Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard a person, or is he actually a replicant? Different people behind the production have provided different answers to this question, and on the big screen the truth remains ambiguous. It's a very big part of Blade Runner's legacy, and one that Blade Runner 2 director Denis Villeneuve has full intentions to cherish in the making of the sequel. Villeneuve's new film Sicario had a big premiere up at the Toronto International Film Festival this past week, and it was while being interviewed by Crave Online that the director revealed how he will be approaching Blade Runner's greatest mystery. Asked if Deckard is a human or a replicant, the Canadian filmmaker first declined to answer - saying "Now that I am on the other side of the fence I cannot answer" - but then he followed-up by discussing his approach t

Wonder Woman Set During World War I?

Image
‘Wonder Woman’ might just focus on its titular heroine long before she joined the Justice League… as a new rumour suggests her solo outing will be set during World War I. From Yahoo! The second half of the film takes place during modern day.” See Also: Wonder Woman #71 - February 1993 Issue - DC Comics Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard that ‘Wonder Woman’ will hop through the ages…but Gonzalez claims that previous reports weren’t exactly on the nose. “Last fall, Bleeding Cool did a story saying the Wonder Woman standalone film will take place during the 1920s with later sequels taking place during World War II and then modern day,” he said. “Well, according to m

King Kong On Move To Warner Bros, Presaging Godzilla Monster Matchup

Image
From Yahoo! Movies Written By: Mike Fleming Jr In a movie move that portends a clash of giant monsters, Legendary Pictures’ Thomas Tull is moving his untitled Skull Island King Kong film to Warner Bros. This is being done to unite the property with Legendary’s other giant franchise, Godzilla. In what would be a pretty epic pairing, the Godzilla sequel that is in the works will be followed by a movie that pits the giant ape versus the giant fire breathing reptile. I’m told this is happening very quickly with moves going all the way to Japan, where Godzilla rights holder Toho is based. Legendary, which moved from Warner Bros to Universal, had developed the Skull Island film at the latter studio. It is unclear at the moment what Universal’s position will be, but I heard the studio move is being done because it is just easier to have all the pieces under one roof, something that Marvel Studios has done with superheroes like The Hulk. King Kong is in the public domain, while Legendary

Star Wars 8 News: Production Set to Begin in Ireland This Month for Episode VIII

Image
From iDigitalTimes Star Wars: The Force Awakens still has several more months to go before its highly-anticipated release, but that’s not stopping moves from being made on the follow up – Star Wars: Episode VIII. Reports initially emerged on Wednesday that the The Force Awakens crew was regrouping in Ireland this month for last minute shoots, but Lucasfilm rebuffed those rumors shortly later. What the set of the original 'Star Trek' series was like 49 years ago

Image
From The Los Angeles Times In the semi-darkness of a massive sound stage on the Desilu-Gower lot, strange creatures dart about through web covered catacombs. In a far off section, where it gleams eerily, grotesque screams penetrate the air. Above it, a rather sarcastic and unmistakable human voice shouts, “Hold it! Let’s take it again…” This is the set of NBC’s “Star Trek,” one of the most expensive and elaborate productions in the history of television. The color series stars William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy and a cast of hundreds (mostly weirdos). The executive producer and architect of “Star Trek” is Gene Roddenberry, former Los Angeles policeman, who served his apprenticeship as one of the medium’s foremost writers. Briefly, “Star Trek” involved the expeditions of the USS Enterprise, an interplanetary cruiser that investigates new worlds and makes diplomatic calls on alien civilizations. Roddenberry had the idea for the series six years ago, but as he explains it, “A
