‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Takes Place Before ‘Star Wars Rebels’ & ‘Rogue One’

Image
From The Playlist As the “Star Wars” galaxy continues to expand with new trilogies and film series outside the main saga, you’re going to need a flowchart to keep track of where the (new) canon stands. As you might recall, when Disney purchased Lucasfilm, any developments in the expanded universe were scrapped, and a new canon was created going forward from “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Disney didn’t waste much time turning on the licensing machine, and there has already been a plethora of books and more that fill in the gaps between movies. This all brings us to this spring’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and you might be wondering where it lands in the chronology. Well, DelRey books has created a handy timeline that clears things up, revealing that ‘Solo’ is set in the three year gap between the books “Star Wars: Tarkin” (which is set 14 years before “Star Wars: A New Hope“) and “Star Wars: A New Dawn” (which is set 11 years before ‘A New Hope’). Luke Skywalker is about eight y

‘Batgirl’ Is Now Just Another DC Films Project In Development

Image
From The Playlist Oh, DC Films. As Marvel celebrates a decade of cinematic world-building mega success, their rivals are still trying to figure out how to make more than one good movie at a time. “Wonder Woman” aside, the post-“The Dark Knight” trilogy era of DC movies has been grim. The efforts have been creatively empty, and financially disappointing, and while there have been an endless array of projects announced, they are all sitting somewhere in the development pile. You can now add “Batgirl” to the list. Late last week, high profile hire Joss Whedon (who earned the good graces of DC by stepping in for Zack Snyder on “Justice League“) exited the project, declaring that as he tried to figure out his way into the script, “I really didn’t have a story.” It was probably just as well, given the optics of a female superhero being written and directed by a dude weren’t so great. But with Whedon gone, The Wrap reports that DC is no rush to get Batgirl to the big screen. According t

‘Captain Marvel’: Gemma Chan Joins Cast As Minn-Erva

Image
From Deadline Hollywood Another piece of Captain Marvel casting has fallen into place. Humans star Gemma Chan is set to play Minn-Erva in the Disney/Marvel superhero movie that stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel. Per the comics-verse, Minn-Erva (aka Doctor Minerva) is a Kree geneticist and spy. Plot details are being kept underwraps for the first female-led superhero project under Disney’s MCU. It will center on Danvers, an Air Force pilot who debuted in the comics in 1968 as a human companion to the original Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell). When her DNA was fused with that of an alien during an accident, the resulting alteration imbued her with the superpowers of strength, energy projection and flight. Minn-Erva has similar powers. Chan is best known for AMC/Channel4’s Humans with Season 3 due later this year. This summer, she’ll star opposite Constance Wu in Warner Bros’ adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel, Crazy Rich Asians. Next up, Chan will be in Focus F

The First Trailer For 'Lost In Space' Reboot Hits The Mark

Image
Netflix has ordered a 10-episode first season of the one-hour sci-fi drama, from Legendary TV, based on the beloved 1960’s sci-fi classic from Irwin Allen. Reimagined by feature writing team Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, Last Witch Hunter), with Zack Estrin (Prison Break) showrunning, the series will premiere worldwide. Taking its cues from the original series, the show centers around the Robinson family, who is forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, they find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and also their own personal demons. Equal parts family drama and sci-fi adventure, it is a survival story for the ages. “The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience. The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation

More 'Jurassic World' Coming In 2021

Image
From The Hollywood Reporter Almost four months before Universal unleashes Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, directed by J.A. Bayona, the studio is making plans for a third installment of the rebooted dinosaur adventure movie series. Jurassic World 3 will be penned by franchise newcomer Emily Carmichael along with Colin Trevorrow, director of the 2015 reboot and co-writer of Fallen Kingdom. The studio has set a June 11, 2021, release date for the movie. Trevorrow is returning to executive produce the new chapter along with Steven Spielberg, the filmmaker behind the original movies in the 1990s. Frank Marshall and Pat Crowley are returning as producers. Plot details are being kept locked in a canister, but Carmichael and Trevorrow will work from a story concocted by Trevorrow and writer partner Derek Connolly. Carmichael co-wrote the upcoming Pacific Rim Uprising and most recently rewrote The Black Hole for Disney and director Joseph Kosinski. Carmichael came to Spielberg’s

The She-Devil with a Sword Fights Back-to-Back with the Lord of the Jungle

Image
Dynamite Entertainment is proud to announce that the acclaimed Red Sonja creative team of Gail Simone and Walter Geovani will reunite for the first-ever crossover between the Hyrkanian warrior and Edgar Rice Burroughs' legendary Lord of the Jungle, Tarzan. Debuting its first issue in May, the Red Sonja / Tarzan series not only delivers high-stakes adventure to genre fans, but provides the fan-favorite writer of Birds of Prey, Secret Six, and Batgirl the opportunity to work with one of her favorite characters for the first time. "It's an odd thing about my career, especially being a female writer mostly known for superheroes, but I do get asked a lot to write these incredibly manly characters quite often, and the truth is that I just love them. I like stories that are bloody and sweaty. I love the dark night pulpy stuff. I can't get enough and it's a sure way to get me to work on a property," says Gail Simone. "Tarzan is the king of them all to me. Whe

Chris McKay Tapped For Dungeons & Dragons

Image
From Variety Chris McKay, who recently directed “The Lego Batman Movie” pic for Warner Bros., is in negotiations to direct “Dungeons & Dragons” for Paramount Pictures. Michael Gillio will be penning the script. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis are producing. The pic will be one of the first projects to go into production for the newly created AllSpark Pictures. Launched last October, production company aims to transform itself into an industry player to rival Marvel Studios. Hasbro’s lines of toys and games include Mr. Potato Head, Monopoly and My Little Pony. Its products have inspired films with varying degrees of success. Paramount and Hasbro could not be reached for comment. The film has been in development for some time but the lawsuit between Sweetpea Entertainment and Hasbro about ownership of sequel rights delayed progress. Once the settlement was finalized in 2015, Hasbro moved the project from Warner Bros. to Paramount and eventually to AllSpark after

What If Deadpool Was A Clown That Killed Monsters On The Subway?

Image
Thanks to Tim Knight for bringing this one to my attention. It's a question that Chinese film makers decided to tackle: "What If Deadpool Was A Clown That Killed Monsters On The Subway?" Honestly this one really has to be seen to be believed. In the upcoming Chinese movie "Animal World" a superhero who is a odd mash up of both Deadpool and The Joker fights a combination of street thugs and Star Wars cantina aliens on the subway. Oh and did I mention that the film stars Michael Douglas? Check this out: No plot details have been released yet, but I think that trailer speaks for itself.
