Rondo Awards Voting Set To Begin February 9

The Twelfth Annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards voting is set to begin Sunday, February 9. The voting will last six weeks and will end on the night of Sunday, March 23.

The Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards "Honors the best in classic horror research, creativity and film preservation." Nominations are still being accepted up to February 9.

I have again placed in nomination Haruo Nakajima to the Monster Kid Hall of Fame (a write-in category).

Rondo Award Winners To Be Announced Tonight!

Haruo Nakajima

When people think of the “Godfathers of Godzilla,” they usually think of three men: Tomoyuki Tanaka, Ishiro Honda and Eiji Tsuburaya. However, there is also a fourth Godfather: Haruo Nakajima. His importance in making Godzilla a fifty year-plus success story cannot be denied.

Nakajima, an actor and stuntman, first donned the Godzilla suit in Godzilla (1954) and continued to play Godzilla and other creatures, including King Kong in King Kong Escapes, Rodan in Rodan, Gaila in War of the Gargantuas, Varan, Moguerra, Mothra and many others. He played Godzilla in twelve features and monsters in twenty six movies, in addition to TV appearances. His skills as a suit actor became so important that he gained the additional responsibility of becoming the choreographer of titanic monster battles in Toho’s daikaiju eiga epics.

When Nakajima was offered the chance to work in Hollywood productions, Eiji Tsuburaya (angrily) asked him to turn down the offer because, as he said, they couldn’t make giant monster movies without Nakajima.

Haruo Nakajima was born on New Year’s Day in 1929 in Yamagata, Japan. He began his career acting in samurai movies. “I was always the one who got killed in a sword fight,” Nakajima says. “One day, I played a pilot in Eagle of the Pacific by Ishiro Honda. In the Midway battle scene, my plane is hit by a bomb. I’m on fire and jump out.  Nowadays, stuntmen specialize in those things, but at the time I was the first Japanese actor to perform such a stunt. This role established my reputation. When they were looking for an actor for Godzilla, they felt I was ideal for it.”

He adds, “They probably thought, ‘He does anything without getting hurt.’” Not always. “When I played the monster Varan,” he said, “a squad of kamikaze planes approached me [to attack]. The explosion [from a special effects bomb] occurred under my thighs. I was burned all the way up to my tummy, but I couldn’t tell anybody during the shoot. Actors didn’t complain at the time (laughs).”

Efforts are now in progress to have Haruo Nakajima inducted into the Rondo Hatton Classic Monster Awards "Monster Kid Hall of Fame."

The Mad Monster Party 2013 will mark the first time in two years that Nakajima-san has attended a North American fan convention. His previous appearance was at Monsterpalooza in Hollywood, California in 2011.

This year, he is accompanied by his daughter, Sonoe Nakajima.  Although Mr. Nakajima does not speak fluent English, fans have found him to be a warm and funny man ready to discuss his monster experiences. He is always happy to greet his public and sign autographs. Please take advantage of this opportunity to honor and meet the man who brought Godzilla and other monsters to life.

Get Haruo Nakajima A Monster Kid Hall of Fame Rondo

We are now more than half way into October and, before we know it, it will be voting time for the annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards.

Earlier this year, during the voting for the Rondo Awards for 2011, a controversy arose involving some prominent Godzilla fans.  (I'm not going into the controversy, you can look it up at the Classic Horror Film Board.)   But an idea was floated by Stuart Galbraith IV about starting a campaign to have the original Godzilla suit-actor, Haruo Nakajima awarded a Rondo Award for his work as Godzilla, Rodan, King Kong, a Gargantua and many other Japanese giant monsters.

At his blog, Galbraith wrote:

“If you’re a fan of Mr. Nakajima’s and would like to see him presented with a Rondo, I say let’s start a campaign now to ensure Mr. Nakajima receives a Lifetime Achievement Award at next year’s ceremony.”

I agree.

Therefore, I am proposing that fans of Japanese science-fiction and fantasy movies, and those who also feel Mr. Nakajima worthy of a Rondo, to petition for his nomination and to get people to vote for Mr. Nakajima's Rondo Award in the Monster Kid Hall of Fame category.

He will be 84 years old this coming New Year's Day.  For his age, he is in reasonably good health.  But that nor he will last forever.  The time is now to get Haruo Nakajima a Rondo Award while he is still healthy enough to enjoy it.

The Rondo awards, named after Rondo Hatton, an obscure B-movie villain of the 1940s, celebrate the best in classic horror research, creativity and film preservation.

Rondo Awards Vote Results To Be Revealed Wednesday Night

The voting for the 9th Annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards ended last night at midnight.

Thanks to those of you who voted for The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan (Best Book) and Monster Island News (Best Blog).



David Colton, the Rondo's man-in-charge, posted the following at the Classic Horror Film Board (CHFB) forum:

The voting is over.

More than 2,900 people voted this year, about the same as the last two years, in the NINTH ANNUAL RONDO HATTO CLASSIC HORROR AWARDS. Thanks to everyone, whether you voted in one category or many.

Tallying the final results -- I still need to collate it all -- will take a little time, as will uploading photos and images, so the plan is:

-- As is tradition, CHFB members will be the first to know as the results are revealed, category by category, in a live chat in the Blind Hermit's Hut here at the CHFB. Time: 10 p.m. ET, Wednesday night.

-- An hour later, at 11 p.m. ET Wednesday night, full results and press release will be posted here and at rondoaward.com.

-- We hope to giive out a few statuettes at Monsterpalooza in two weeks, but the bulk will be awarded at WonderFest during the annual Rondo Awards Ceremony in Louisville on May 15 (5 p.m.).

Some winners are obvious, but other contests are so close I still won't know who won until I add up the various count sheets. So even I may be surprised.

Imagine my delight when I learned that Monster Island News had been nominated in the category of "Best Blog" for the 9th annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards!

"The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan" Garners Rondo Nomination

It's that time of year again!

The Ninth Annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards ballot is now up and ready for your votes!

The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan has been nominated in the Best Book of The Year category. (Note: It was on last year's ballot, but since it didn't get published (or "go live") until January 2010, I requested that it be removed from the ballot so that people can fairly judge it a year later.) It is an honor just to have it nominated!

Also, Monster Island News has been nominated in the "Best Blog" category!

What is the Rondo Award? According to the official Rondo Awards website:

The Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards were created by David Colton and Kerry Gammill at the Classic Horror Film Boards in 2002. The awards are fan-based, and have no connection to any commercial sponsor. Anyone in fandom can vote or propose nominees.





The 'Rondo' award itself, shown at right, features a bust sculpted by illustrator Kerry Gammill, and cast by modeler Tim Lindsey.

The statuette is a miniature version of the bust of Hatton seen in the Universal film, HOUSE OF HORRORS (1946). The Rondos have been praised by recipients for their quiet beauty and evocation of classic horror.

Nominees for the Rondo are selected from suggestions by horror fans, pros and enthusiasts offered all year at the CHFB. Each year's nominees are finalized by classic horror fan David Colton (taraco@aol.com), with the help of more than 20 classic horror fans from around the world, and with expertise in all parts of fandom.

Your votes for The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan and Monster Island News are very much appreciated, of course. But the most important thing for Japanese (and all) monster fans is to vote!

Rondo Awards: You Can Now Vote!

It's that time of the year again! What time? It's Rondo Award time!

The ballot for the 2009 Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards is now up and ready for your votes!

I noted that The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan received a nomination in the "Best Book" category. Unfortunately, while I am honored to have it nominated, it did not come out in 2009 and was only made available on January 13. The Guide is only now hitting mailboxes everywhere (I've yet to receive my orders).

While it is nice to be nominated (and the nominating committee wanted to give it some publicity), I've asked David Colton (head honcho for the Rondo Awards) to remove it so that votes can properly go to those deserving books that did actually come out in 2009.

If it is deemed worthy for a nomination for this year (the voting will take place next year), I would gladly accept a nomination then. At least by then, people will have been able to read it and make a sound judgement.

I can make one recommendation, Peter H. Brothers's Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men: The Fantastic Cinema of Ishiro Honda was also nominated.

Update: I hope Armand doesn't mind me adding a footnote to his article, but I thought that everyone should know that Monster Island News has been nominated for 'Best Website'.

I feel truly honoured that the fans out there felt strong enough to nominate our work for such a prestigious award.

Voting Starts Sunday Night For 2009 Rondo Awards!

The eighth annual Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Awards voting will begin this coming Sunday, February 21.

According to the Rondo Award website:

WE'VE HAD SOME DELAYS, BUT ON SUNDAY, FEB. 21, WE'LL PUBLISH THE BALLOT FOR THE 8TH ANNUAL RONDO AWARDS.

VOTING WILL CONTINUE THROUGH SATURDAY., APRIL 3, 2010.

WE APOLOGIZE FOR THE DELAY (changing host sites is never easy), AND HOPE YOU'LL HELP HONOR THE BEST OF 2009 BY VOTING!

Nominations are still being accepted. Also, voters are allowed to write-in their choice(s) on the ballot.

Generally, a voter will need to copy and paste the ballot and email it to the tabulators. Directions on voting will be provided on the ballot website.

Remember, vote early and often!

Note: The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan was mentioned as a possible nominee by David Colton, one of the Rondo Award execs. But I pointed out to him that The Guide wasn't going live until 2010. It is their decision to include it (or just the cover, since it was revealed last year) on the ballot or not. But I think it would be more appropriate to be on next year's ballot.
