Monster Island News: Space Monster Pictures

Some of you may remember way back in June of last year when I wrote a little article about Space Monster Pictures and their stop-motion monster project called "Tuatara".

At that time very little was known about the project, except that it featured a giant dinosaur attacking a city and fighting some form of giant robot.

Well Avery Guerra was finally able to contact Michael S, the man behind the whole thing, and get some info on his plans for "Tuatara."

“The plan as now: ten minute episodes with 30-second opening titles and 30-second closing credits = 11 minutes (15 min. TV time slot without commercials). This is how shows like “Metalocalypse” and “Invader Zim” are done. But, unlike these two, the series will run consecutive episodes with dramatic story arcs that will be resolved in later episodes, via cliffhangers, etc. — so that the first 9 episodes can be edited together to form a 90-minute feature. Good idea, eh?”

From that it looks like he is either planning for a short TV run, possibly on something like 'Adult Swim', or a theatrical release.

Actually from his follow-up statement it looks like he is indeed looking toward the 2009 film festival circuit for "Tuatara." The film, which has been in production since 2005, looks like it is nearing completion, “I am hoping to have the first episode ready for the next big rush of film festivals for 2009.”

Regardless of how "Tuatara" is packaged in the end, Michael S is playing it smart by keeping his options open.

Note: Michael S worked on the effects for such films as "The Abyss" and "Total Recall!"

Avery e-mailed me over the weekend about a cool little production company he discovered called, "Space Monster Pictures." What I have been able gather from their couple of websites is that they have been working on a stop-motion monster movie called "Tuatara" since 2005. It looks like a really cool lttle flick about a giant dinosaur attacking a city and fighting some form of giant robot. Now you can see why Avery and I are really jazzed about this!

I really can't tell you very much else about the project, except for the fact that there is a website with a lot of cool production and design photos and their is also a Myspace page for "Space Monster Pictures" that is worth checking out. Actually the whole thing is worth the time of any giant monster movie fan to check out. It looks as if the Oregon based company has also been working on other giant robot, dinosaur, and giant ape projects along with "Tuatara."
