Initially I had big hopes that the "live-action" movie based on the popular 80s animated series, "Robotech", may, somehow turn out to be a decent film. Those hopes keep getting stomped on every time I find out new information about the production.
This past June I was happy to find out that famed screenwriter Lawrance Kasdan (Empire, Jedi, Raiders) had signed on to write the screenplay for "Robotech", but sadly that deal must have fallen through, or it was total BS to start with. Regardless, I was announced yesterday that Alfred Gough and Miles Millar (The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor and Shanghai Noon) had been hired to write the script. The move, according to The Hollywood Reporter, was to bring the production some, "geek cred", which I assume means, to turn it into something fanboys will enjoy. Unfortunately, none of the duos prior films have really struck any kind of a chord with fans of fantasy and sci fi films. Looks like good old Warner Bros failed to do their homework on this one.
Add into this mix, a message board post I read some time back, stating that the Veritechs were going to look like F-16s and producer Chuck Roven's quotes, that the movie would be "reasonably faithful" to the original series, and I smell a potential disaster.
Honestly I'm starting to care about this one less and less. A real pity. I so wanted to see a "live-action" Robotech movie for decades. Now, it looks like the movie will turn out to be nothing like what fans had envisioned. Why does Hollywood do this over and over? With so much good source material out there, you would think that a good movie could be produced from it. Hell, I would be happy if they just ripped-off the 1984 "Macross" movie.
Sigh......

And the whining begins.

ReplyDeleteWhining? I prefer bitching.....whatever
ReplyDeleteI just hope that somebody out there would listen to the fans and make decent movies....
Okay, I know that is a long shot.
We can all hope, but sometimes, you have to have a open mind.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes, I admit, whining was a little uncalled for. I guess I see something about a franchise that riles up the fanboys, but it turns about being decent. hell, alot of people thought Transformers was going to be shitty, but it turned out to be a decent movie.
Well that is where we don't agree. Transformers was really awful.
ReplyDeleteThis is how I described Transformers: "Its a John Hughes car comercial, with robots." (yes you can use that quote - just give credit)
I think that the real problem lies with Hollywood taking a property, like Robotech, then tearing it apart to the point where it is nothing like the source material.
I understand that some things would have to be changed to turn the animated series into a film. Small changes can be tolerated, but major ones just ruin it.
I really think that the only way movies get made these days is if it has a proven commodity attached to it, like a comic book, TV series, or toy line. The film makers get handed this stuff and decide to throw away the back stories and make the film that they want. Normally at the fans expense.
It is just a shitty way to make movies.....period.
One of the things that made ROBOTECH stand out was its realistic story-line, Characters, technology. What they need to do is get some help from true fans with military experiance (real life experiance, NOT Game board or game system experiance). Some of the best storys I've seen were not from career writes but from the people who actully "Been There, Done That". -MPilotVF1V

Considering the legal entanglements surrounding BigWest and Harmony Gold, any RT film could not legally use the Macross designs.
ReplyDeleteLittle wonder they are "re-imagining" it for the big screen...
I agree....Hollywood screws up good source material. Just look at The Last Airbender and Speed Racer. Are you friggin' serious?! Awful awful remakes. And I heard Toby Maguire is still playing Rick Hunter? That's laughable. Lemme guess....they're gonna cast Scarlett Johanssen with hair dyed black to play Minmay.
ReplyDeleteThe mecha designer for all of James Cameron's movies would do it justice. Avatar mecha rocked. I say J.J. Abrahms should direct!!!!
