Loretta Swit, "Hot Lips" Houlihan on 'M*A*S*H* Dies at 87 | TV Legends

Loretta Swit, the beloved actress best known for her iconic role as Major Margaret "Hot Lips" Houlihan on the groundbreaking television series MASH, passed away on Friday at the age of 87 in her New York City home. According to her publicist Harlan Boll, Swit died just after midnight of suspected natural causes. A versatile performer who began her career on stage before transitioning to television, Swit left an indelible mark with her portrayal of the tough yet vulnerable head nurse of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War. Her nuanced, fiery performance earned her immense critical acclaim, including 10 Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series - one for every season MASH aired. Swit took home the coveted trophy in 1980 and 1982. She appeared in nearly every episode of the series, an impressive 240 out of 251 episodes during the show's highly successful 11-year run from 1972 to 1983. Beyond her celebrated work on MAS*H, Swit was a passionate animal welfare activist and devoted much of her time and energy to advocating for various animal rights causes. Her passing marks the loss of a trailblazing actress whose talent, dedication, and warmth both on and off screen will be deeply missed.
