Godzilla - 0.0 | Rumors & Speculation | Movie News

 Written By Ken Hulsey

It's been quite a while since I've taken the time to write about Godzilla, and reflecting on it brings back a wave of nostalgia. In the early days of Atomic Robot, which began its journey as "Monster Island News," the focus was heavily on Godzilla and other iconic figures from Japanese science fiction. It became a cherished hub for fans, buzzing with excitement over the latest monster flicks. However, as time passed, my interests evolved. Writing solely about Japanese films and television felt increasingly limiting, prompting me to explore my passions for photography and travel.

Now, after my return to Atomic Robot earlier this year, I decided to embrace the freedom to express whatever thoughts come my way, touching on a broad range of topics. Today, however, I’m excited to circle back to my roots with an update on the much-anticipated "Godzilla - 0.0." As many enthusiasts know, Toho has been quite secretive about this project, leaving writers like myself on a quest for snippets of information. We’re left piecing together hints and clues, trying to imagine what the plot might entail. Will Godzilla be flying solo once again, or could there be another monstrous contender lurking in the shadows, ready to wreak havoc in post-WWII Japan?

One reassuring detail is that the talented director Takashi Yamazaki is returning to helm this film. Plus, we can expect to see Ryûnosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, and several familiar faces from "Godzilla - 1.0" reprising their roles, establishing this entry as a direct sequel. It’s exciting to think that the story might pick up a few years after the thrilling events of its predecessor.

A recent announcement has revealed that some filming will take place across picturesque locations in Norway and New Zealand. This is quite unusual for a Godzilla film, as they have traditionally been shot in Japan—except for the outlier, "Godzilla: Final Wars." The buzz around this project is further amplified by its reportedly larger budget compared to "Godzilla - 1.0," which was created with around $14 million and won an Oscar for Best Special Effects. This hints at a grander production scale, promising to elevate the epic nature of the film.

When it comes to potential monsters Godzilla might face, rumors are swirling like leaves in the autumn wind. Some writers have latched onto Yamazaki's intriguing comment about updating Hedorah, also known as The Smog Monster. Imagining a creature born from the remnants of post-war debris adds a fascinating layer to the narrative. Whether this idea is genuinely being considered remains to be seen.

With "Zero" in the title, many enthusiasts speculate about the possibility of Ghidorah, often referred to as Monster Zero, being Godzilla's formidable opponent. Personally, I think that's quite a stretch. It would be thrilling to see Anguirus make a return in this installment, as I feel it’s time for him to reclaim his place in the franchise. Including either Varan or Rodan would not only be a delightful nod to the original Japanese monster movies from the 1950s but would also resonate with long-time fans.

For now, however, everything remains speculative, and we’re all left eagerly awaiting new updates in the months leading to the film's release in late 2026. Until then, let’s keep our fingers crossed for more exciting revelations about our beloved giant monster!
