Return to Yucca Flats: Desert Man-Beast - Director Thinks It's The Worst Film Ever Made?

Written By: Ken Hulsey

When a director normally talks about a movie that they are working on, they generally try and hype it up a bit by saying that it is one of the best films of a certain genre.

In fact recently Jennifer Lynch went as far as to say that her new film "Hisss" is, "....the greatest horror movie made in the history of cinema, better than Hitchcock, better than 'The Exorcist'”.

Now in the case of David Hayes, and his new movie, "Return to Yucca Flats: Desert Man-Beast", you get the exact opposite. Hayes isn't trying to hype up his movie by saying how great it is, oh no, he wants everyone to know just how bad it is.

Imagine my reaction when I read this quote from the film maker, "Frankly, and inadvertently, we have made the worst movie ever. I'm not joking. I'm serious. It is horrible. No company in their right mind would distribute this one! You won't believe just how bad this is."

At first I was puzzled by this. Then I realized that Hayes is a genius.

Just hear me out.

When you think about it, anyone can make a 'good' movie, but it takes a lot of talent to make a bad one. Honestly, it's not as easy as you think.

Also, to come right out and say it's bad, is an excellent move on the director's part.

Before I read Hayes comments, I honestly didn't care that much about, "Return to Yucca Flats: Desert Man-Beast", but now I have to see it.

From the outset, it didn't look like Hayes had much to work with. The film, which is a follow-up to the 1961 cult movie classic, "The Beast of Yucca Flats", basically is just about some harry guy (Hayes himself) terrorizing a bunch of mega-hot girls in bikinis (see above).

To be honest, the original "Beast of Yucca Flats" is just B movie icon Tor Johnson wandering around in the desert, so adding bikini girls to the mix, could be considered more genius on Hayes part as well.

Let's be blatantly honest, in the grand scheme of things, would you rather be a run-of-the-mill director who makes decent films? Or an infamous director who makes really cheesy ones.

More people know about the films of Ed Wood, Roger Corman and Russ Meyer than they do about the ones made by Rob Marshall (His film "Chicago" won the Oscar for 'best picture' in 2003).

Yes, I really think that Hayes is on to something here. Besides, in this business, there is no such thing as 'bad' publicity, so by coming out and saying that he has made a less than "B" movie, he will certainly get more attention for his film than he would otherwise.

Look for "Return to Yucca Flats: Desert Man-Beast" to be for sale at Amazon.com in few months.

It's been since way back in February that I had last gotten an update from David Hayes about his film "Return to Yucca Flats: Desert Man-Beast", a sequel to the 1961 cult movie classic, "The Beast of Yucca Flats".

As you probably don't remember, the plot of the original film centered around a crazed murderer, (played by B movie icon Tor Johnson) who wonders into a nuclear test site and gets a good old gigantic dose of gamma rays or strontium 90....whatever, and turns into a 'Kong' sized raging nut bag.

Well, Hayes has put his own spin on the sequel, and from the looks of it, it's about a big harry guy who terrorizes a bunch of mega-hot girls in bikinis. Yes, the director has improved on the original by leaps and bounds.

We were sent two new clips from the film at the end of last week. One basically shows the aforementioned harry guy dancing around in the desert. Now, I can tell you from living in the Mojave desert for the past five years, that this is not too uncommon a site. The heat can make people do bizarre things, especially if they've had a few too many cold ones.

The second features Dannish actor Kim Sonderholm in an intro clip to the film, where he warns the viewer that if they have a week heart or aversion to bad films, they should turn away and put on "Driving Miss Daisy." The clip is an obvious homage to the cheesy intros to classic 50s sci fi and the horror films of the 30s and 40s, where someone feels it necessary to 'warn' theater patrons that the movie they are about to see may scare them to the point that they may need medical attention.

I contacted Kim Sonderholm over the weekend in hopes of getting some inside scoops on the production. Mr. Sonderholm told me that the above clip was actually filmed at his own home, so he didn't have any 'dirt' on "Yucca Flats" that he could pass one.

Hayes is presently working on some 'fake' grindouse-like trailers for the film called "Camp KillNoMore" and "Love Tard".

If everything stays on schedule "Return to Yucca Flats: Desert Man-Beast" will be completed by the end of the month.

David Hayes is living the dream. He has written, produced and starred in his own movie, where he gets to share screen time with three sexy, bikini-clad, young ladies. Most guys would chop off a limb to do something like that.

Certainly nobody could fault good old David for making that kind of dream come true?

Well, probably not, but some people may want to give him a psychological evaluation after they learn that his dream movie is a sequel to the 1961 B movie, "The Beast of Yucca Flats" entitled, "Return to Yucca Flats: Desert Man-Beast."

Now many of you may not remember the original "Beast." It was, after all, a very forgettable movie. A movie, that many believe, rivals Ed Wood's "Plan 9 From Outer Space", a possibly the worst sci fi movie ever created.

In that film, a crazed murderer, (played by B movie icon Tor Johnson) wanders into nuclear bomb test, which turns him into an even more crazed murderer. As you can tell, the plot wasn't exactly "Masterpiece Theater" material.

Hardly seems like a movie that needed a sequel, but Hayes thought it did, so who are we to judge.

Anyway, David Hayes was kind enough to send us some publicity photos from his film:

Yes, this is a movie about a rather large man (we have to be PC) terrorising three bikini-clad hotties. Honestly I have seen this very same scene on the beach here in Southern California countless times.

This poor guy must have tried to step in between "The Beast" and the young ladies. Serves him right.

Okay, this may be the greatest publicity photo ever. It really doesn't need a title. Hayes should just use it as the poster for the film. It sells itself.

Well here we have blood dripping down......um......between......

Here is the poster for "Return to Yucca Flats: Desert Man-Beast." Again you only really need the bottom four shots to sell the movie.
