Greg Hildebrandt Creates an Homage to the Iconic "Star Wars" Painting With Red Sonja

Dynamite is proud to announce the latest instant classic, fully painted comic book cover from legendary artist Greg Hildebrandt. His latest masterpiece uses Red Sonja to pay homage to his world-famous "Star Wars" poster from over 40 years ago. And it's available right now on Kickstarter!

“I was honored to work with Nicky and the Dynamite team on this Kickstarter campaign," said artist Greg Hildebrandt. "When they told me it was Red Sonja and explained what they wanted, I really got into the project. It’s fun for me to paint a badass woman with a sword. Then seeing the final product and what they are doing with the various covers made it a complete package for the fans. My fans and Red Sonja’s fans! Hope you enjoy the art.”

Often working alongside his twin brother Tim as the "Brothers Hildebrandt," Greg has always had close ties to comics. After building a strong reputation with works like their cherished Lord of the Rings calendar artwork, their painting appeared on the cover or inside such early boundary-pushing comics magazines as Heavy Metal and Epic Illustrated. In the 1990s the pair, jointly and separately, rose to the top of the industry with their in-demand cover art. An entire generation of fans connected with their work through the popular 1994 Marvel Masterpieces trading cards.

Almost every single person familiar with popular culture can recognize one major piece from the Hildebrandts. Commissioned to paint a new theatrical poster for the original Star Wars film's 1977 UK release, the twins finished it up in a tight 36-hour window. The image played a crucial role in one of the defining fandoms of the 20th century and beyond, and today the She-Devil with a Sword finds herself in those same footprints.

To complete this classic 1977 extravaganza, the cover will be gracing a reprint of the original Red Sonja #1 from that same year. Definitive artist of the era Frank Thorne beautifully illustrates "The Blood of the Unicorn.," written by Roy Thomas, Clair Noto and Ed Summer. This touching story shows both the ferocity and compassion of Dynamite's sword-swinging queen. To fully capture that 70s feel, a special retro cover variant will only be available in the first 48 hours of the campaign.

The limited-edition comic variant is available in multiple variations on the Kickstarter campaign. In addition to the retro version, fans can get a standard edition of the comic with modern trade dress, as a "virgin" version without any logos, or a black and white line art edition. All options are available signed by Hildebrandt or preserved and graded by CGC Comics. Those looking forward to Disney's INDIANA JONES 5 will have to wait just a bit longer to set out on another adventure with Harrison Ford's bullwhip-wielding rogue, as the studio has announced that the film has been moved from July 10, 2020 for a July 9. 2021 debut. As it happens, the film was supposed to shift into production in the United Kingdom in April of 2019, though scheduling conflicts and scripting issues seem to have "kalimaed" those plans. Never fear, though. Spielberg is still set to direct and Ford is reportedly looking forward to going on yet another dangerous mission as Disney plunders the series for more cash.

Furthermore, INDIANA JONES 5 isn't the only film from the studio that's being moved. As a part of the Indy announcement, the House of Mouse has also revealed that Dwayne Johnson's JUNGLE CRUISE will now set sail in theaters on Oct. 11, 2019, while Angelina Jolie's MALEFICENT 2 will cast a spell in cinemas on May 29, 2020. Furthermore, MARY POPPINS RETURNS starring Emily Blunt will now open on December 19th as opposed to its original Christmas Day release date.

Adjust your calendars as needed, and hold tight for when Disney reveals more about INDIANA JONES 5: THE SEARCH FOR MORE MONEY. Heh, that's not really what it's called, but I can't resist a good SPACEBALLS reference, and neither should you.

Shanna The She-Devil: And A Jungle Queen Is Born!

Shanna O'Hara, Lady Plunder is the daughter of a diamond miner named Gerald O'Hara. Born in Africa, she spent the majority of her childhood growing up in the jungles of Zaire. At the age of six, her father went to kill a rogue leopard that belonged to her mother, Patricia O'Hara. While hunting for the leopard, Shanna's father accidentally killed her mother. This traumatic incident led to Shanna's lifelong crusade against the use of firearms. After the incident, Shanna moved back to the United States to live with relatives. Shanna grows up to become an accomplished Olympic athlete, specializing in competitive swimming and track and field. She then became a licensed veterinarian.

After completing college, Shanna began to work for the Central Park Municipal Zoo in New York City as a zoologist. While working at the zoo, Shanna raised many animals, including a female leopard named Julani. During this period another shock to her system came when Julani was shot and killed by a zoo guard. The following day, the zoo director proposes Shanna take Julani's cubs, Ina and Biri — Yoruba names meaning "bright" and "black", respectively — to the Dahomey Reserve in Africa.

While in Africa, Shanna becomes more attuned to nature, patrolling the jungle and living freely in the wild lands. She begins to wear Julani's fur pelt as a sight-and-sense cue to help with the raising of the cubs. In the jungle, Shanna becomes more and more at home with herself and her new native element, all the while protecting the reserve from poachers as Shanna the She-Devil.

During her stay in Africa, her father is kidnapped by the Mandrill. Shanna searches for him until the wizard Malgato kidnaps her to the Savage Land, a prehistoric jungle within Antarctica. She escapes with the help of Lord Kevin Plunder, a.k.a. the jungle lord Ka-Zar. Shanna returns to Africa to look for her father, and learns he was killed by the Mandrill. Seeking revenge, she goes to North America to aid Daredevil and Black Widow in stopping the Mandrill and Nekra's plan to overthrow the American government.

After this, Shanna travels between San Francisco and the Savage Land, finally returning to Africa only to find Ina and Biri have been killed by a religious cult leader named Raga-Shah. After a short grieving period in North America, Shanna tracks and kills Raga-Shah by feeding him to her python Ananta. Around this time, she begins therapy with psychologist Dr. Dorothy Betz.

Shanna returned to the Savage Land and became Ka-Zar's lover. They discovered their lost world was only part of a larger realm, Pangea, filled with wondrous races. The couple's relationship was tempestuous: Shanna married Mele of the Botor who died in a hunting accident while with Ka-Zar. Shanna was also targeted by the demonic Belasco (who felt she resembled his lost love Beatrice). When Ka-Zar was seemingly killed while they were in New York, a distraught Shanna rampaged, was institutionalized, and nearly romanced Peter Parker. Shanna was rescued by a revived Ka-Zar, aided by Spider-Man, and the two returned to Antarctica, where they were married despite interference from Belasco and others. "It's an odd thing about my career, especially being a female writer mostly known for superheroes, but I do get asked a lot to write these incredibly manly characters quite often, and the truth is that I just love them. I like stories that are bloody and sweaty. I love the dark night pulpy stuff. I can't get enough and it's a sure way to get me to work on a property," says Gail Simone. "Tarzan is the king of them all to me. When I was a kid, I read every Edgar Rice Burroughs book I could find. They had these Neal Adams covers, or Frazetta, or someone equally wonderful. And I just fell into that world in the same way you might fall into Middle Earth. I loved the jungle aspects, the family stories, and I loved how Tarzan had to fend for himself at the start. It was just exhilarating to me."

Red Sonja / Tarzan #1 unites the iconic heroine of swords-and-sorcery with the quintessential jungle adventurer in deadly conflict with Eson Duul - an evil man whose very name makes the powerful quake with fear. "I wanted a classic-style villain, something that would fit in with an ERB story or a Robert E. Howard story. And what we have is something that is kind of like a Tarzan gone wrong, someone who isn't content just to dominate; he has to make his targets extinct from the Earth. He's basically awful, and yet, he's not completely unlike some real like people with too much power."

Chris McKay Tapped For Dungeons & Dragons

Chris McKay, who recently directed “The Lego Batman Movie” pic for Warner Bros., is in negotiations to direct “Dungeons & Dragons” for Paramount Pictures.

Michael Gillio will be penning the script. Hasbro’s Brian Goldner and Stephen Davis are producing.

The pic will be one of the first projects to go into production for the newly created AllSpark Pictures. Launched last October, production company aims to transform itself into an industry player to rival Marvel Studios.

Hasbro’s lines of toys and games include Mr. Potato Head, Monopoly and My Little Pony. Its products have inspired films with varying degrees of success. Paramount and Hasbro could not be reached for comment.

The film has been in development for some time but the lawsuit between Sweetpea Entertainment and Hasbro about ownership of sequel rights delayed progress. Once the settlement was finalized in 2015, Hasbro moved the project from Warner Bros. to Paramount and eventually to AllSpark after announcing the new studio.

McKay has been high on various studios’ lists since helming “The Lego Batman Movie” movie last year; he went on to land the coveted directing job for the Warner Bros. and DC movie “Nightwing.” McKay is also an exec producer on the “The Lego Sequel” which is currently filming.
