Science-fiction films are somewhat out of fashion as of late, but with Gravity looking a serious Oscar contender, the much-maligned genre may be seeing a comeback.

Here are just ten Sci-Fi films you need to see before you head on out of this world...

10. Moon (2009)

Here at entertainment.ie, we think Sam Rockwell is just the bee's knees. If you've never seen Galaxy Quest or this year's Seven Psychopaths, stop what you're doing and go watch them. Not only is he a great comedic actor, however, he's done some serious roles. This little gem is directed by none other than David Bowie's son, Duncan Jones. It was made for a pittance compared to most sci-fi films nowadays - €5 million - and it's become a cult hit.

Get Ready To Rock Your Ash Off With EVIL DEAD The Musical

John Johnson of Darkstone Entertainment (http://www.darkstone-ent.com) has just wrapped production on Plan 9, the PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE remake (http://www.plan9movie.com) and while the film moves into post production, he has set his eyes on a new project:Evil Dead The Musical!

When Johnson was first approached with the idea of Darkstone taking on Sam Raimi’s classic film turned stage, he was terrified and intrigued. “I like many have loved Sam Raimi’s work for a very long time, and had seen the play off Broadway a few years back. I grew up with a very large musical background and am kinda a sucker for a good play. I felt that Evil Dead: The Musical paid homage to what I loved in the Deadseries and gave us a really nifty and new style in their adaptation. I am honored to throw my hat into the ring as a director of the play.” – John Johnson

The musical is set to open in October 2011 at Play On! Theatre (http://www.playontheatre.org/) in Charlottesville, VA for 14 shows, including a special Halloween showing. The Awards Just Keep Coming For Duncan Jones Sci Fi Epic 'Moon'

The accolades just keep coming for Duncan Jones new sci fi thriller "Moon". Already the winner of the the Michael Powell Award for a new British feature at the 63rd Annual Edinburgh International Film Festival, "Moon" won the awards for best film, best screenplay and best actor (for the film's star Sam Rockwell) Sunday at Spain's Sitges film festival.

I fell in love with this movie after seeing it's trailer back in April, and since then I have been doing nothing less than singing the film's praises to anyone who will listen ever since.

"Moon" looks like a real 'throw-back' to the sci fi films of the late 60s and early 70's that I grew up on, most notably "Silent Running", which looks like it was the inspiration for this new movie.

Here is the plot:

Sam Bell (Sam Rockwell) is nearing the end of his contract with Lunar. He’s been a faithful employee for 3 long years. His home has been Sarang, a moon base where he has spent his days alone, mining Helium 3. The precious gas holds the key to reversing the Earth’s energy crisis.

Isolated, determined and steadfast, Sam has followed the rulebook obediently and his time on the moon has been enlightening, but uneventful. The solitude has given him time to reflect on the mistakes of his past and work on his raging temper. He does his job mechanically, and spends most of his available time dreaming of his imminent return to Earth, to his wife, young daughter and an early retirement.

But 2 weeks shy of his departure from Sarang, Sam starts seeing things, hearing things and feeling strange. And when a routine extraction goes horribly wrong, he discovers that Lunar have their own plans for replacing him and the new recruit is eerily familiar.

Before he can return to Earth, Sam has to confront himself and the discovery that the life he has created, may not be his own. It’s more than his contract that is set to expire.

Moon Wins Best New Feature Award At Edinburgh Film Festival

Duncan Jones new sci fi film, "Moon", won the Michael Powell Award for a new British feature at the 63rd Annual Edinburgh International Film Festival. The film, which stars Sam Rockwell, was the fastest screening at the festival to sell out, due mostly to Internet buzz. Fans and critics alike, gave the film high marks, adding to the speculation the film will become a cult hit when it is released later this year.

I got on the "Moon" bandwagon a couple of months back after I stumbled upon the trailer. To me the film looks like a throw-back to the sci fi films of the late 1960s and early 1970s, like "2001", and most notably "Silent Running." In fact I would go out on a limb and call "Moon" a modern "Silent Running" with a twist. In the trailer Rockwell looks like mirror image of "Running" star Bruce Dern, in fact just about all the elements of seen in the film look heavily 'inspired' by the 1972 film.

The Trailer For Moon Starring Sam Rockwell

I don't know if your like me, but it has been a while since I saw a trailer that really got me geeked up about a movie. Well, today was a slow news day, so I started poking my nose around the Internet, trying to sniff out a story or two to post before the weekend.

As a matter of luck, I stumbled across the trailer for a new sci fi movie called "Moon" and it really grabbed my attention. The film looks a lot like the old sci fi films from the late 60s and early 70s that I grew up with. It has the feeling of a "2001" and "Silent Running" type of film, in fact that's all I could think about, while I was watching the trailer.

To kinda map out the story, from what I saw in the trailer, the film centers on an astronaut named Sam, played by Sam Rockwell (Carlie's Angels, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy) who is the sole caretaker of a large mining operation on the Moon. Everything is going fine, until about a couple of weeks before he is set to return to Earth, strange things begin to happen. For starters, the astronaut finds an exact double of himself in a crashed pod. From that point on, good old Sam starts to come unraveled, wondering if he is part of some strange plot, or if he is going out of his mind from being isolated for such a long period of time.

It looks like a great sci fi film that will cause you to have to use your mind a lot, and how long has it been since we were treated to a film like that?

"Moon" is scheduled for a limited release June 12th, and I for one am going to seek this one out.
