The world is supposed to be in some sort of recession right? Well try telling that to the lucky winning bidder of a collection of rare Star Wars promotional material this past weekend who shelled out a whopping $10,000 for the lot. The pile of rare items was part of the online auction put on by "Profiles in History" that also included a massive amount of rare props and promotional items from all genres and eras of American cinema. Originally the auction house had estimated that the literal pile of "Star Wars" related items would fetch an estimated $200-$300. It honestly looks as if the people who appraised the items either underestimated their value or underestimated the lengths fans will go to possess items of this nature.
We really shouldn't just pick on the person who won the "Star Wars" items though, just about everything auction off fetched a price way "above and beyond" the estimated value.
Check these prices out:
2975: The Blues Brothers window card & promo artwork - $1,500
2836: Revenge of the Creature lobby cards - $1,500
2656: Lot of 50-75 film posters pressbooks lobby cards - $2,500
2532: 600+ adventure fantasy horror sci-fi lobby cards - $3,250
2530: 500+ lobby cards and posters from sci-fi films - $3,750
2529: Lot of 700+ sci-fi film lobby cards and posters - $5,000
2528: 600+ lobby cards & posters from sci-fi films - $6,000
2422: Universal horror scripts - Black Lagoon & sequels $2,500
All of those were estimated to go for $200-$300.......oops.
Know that is not to say that there weren't some bargain purchases made during the auction. Some fans of the original "Planet of the Apes" films were able to walk off with sets of original movie posters and lobby cards for $100 and $150 respectively.
I have a sneaking suspicion that we will be seeing a lot of those bulk items being broken up for individual sale on eBay in the very near future.
