Film maker Rob Zombie isn't content with just scaring the crap out of us with his "Halloween" films, oh no, now he wants to scare the crap out of us with a sci fi film, namely a remake of the 1958 cult-classic "The Blob."
Zombie intends to follow his usual post movie rituals. That normally entails mixing his music and movie careers together. The film maker explains, "I usually follow a movie by putting out a record and going on tour, and I write the script during that tour," he said. "The tour will take me through Christmas."
Zombie goes on to explain that he had wanted to do something else besides pure horror and "The Blob" will give him a vehicle to do just that. "I’d been looking to break out of the horror genre, and this really is a science fiction movie about a thing from outer space. I intend to make it scary, and the great thing is, I have the freedom once again to take it in any crazy direction I want to. Even more than 'Halloween', where I had to deal with accepted iconic characters like Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. 'The Blob' is more concept than specific storyline with characters, so I can go nuts with it. My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing ... I have a totally different take, one that’s pretty dark."
Here is the plot for the original 1958 film (From IMDB):
A meteorite falls in the country of a small town, bringing a jelly creature. An old farmer is attacked by the alien in his hand, and the youths Steve Andrews and his girlfriend Jane Martin take him to Dr. T. Hallen. The local doctor treats carefully the blister, and asks Steve to investigate the location where they found the old man. When Steve returns, he sees the blob killing the doctor. Steve and Jane try to warn the police and the dwellers, but nobody believe on them, while the blob engulfs many people, getting bigger and bigger.
If you have seen the film, than you probably remember hordes of people streaming out of a movie theater while being chased by a giant mass of goo. That's pretty much the film wrapped up in one scene. People running, and ooze...um..oozing.
It will be interesting to see what kind of a spin Zombie can put on this one. No matter what, I'm sure it will scare us to death.
Until last night, I liked every Rob Zombie movie ever made. Unfortunately, his HALLOWEEN 2 is an unfocused mess that would be best viewed as a ten minute montage of brutal kills in a series retropsective rather than as a feature. I can only hope Zombie recaptures some of his magic from DEVIL'S REJECTS and his first HALLOWEEN if he's going to take on THE BLOB.
ReplyDeleteThe '88 remake was good enough. Do we REALLY need another one?
ReplyDeleteJoe, we didn't NEED either of the previous versions, or the comedic sequel to the original. Honestly, man, this is a site dedicated primarily to monster/horror movie news. At what point do we decide that we don't need any more of these often formulaic and derivative genre films (or, for that matter, any of the wholly original ones!) which are produced as entertainment for leisure time consumption and just abandon the hobby of watching movies altogether? If they only made movies we needed, there'd only be a handful of films made, and all of them would be education or instructional. In short, of course we don't need another blob movie. But this isn't really a place where we discuss things we "need", is it?
ReplyDelete{But this isn't really a place where we discuss things we "need", is it?}
ReplyDeleteGee. I don't know. Fuck me for having an opinion. I assumed if there was a comment box that comments and thoughts were welcome. How stupid of me. Does this same thought process apply to your review of H2? If we don't "need" these films to be anything more than what they are then why should it matter if it was an "unfocused mess"? This is not a blog I need to be part of.
I don't know about you, but I 'need' movies to escape the day to day happenings of my life.
ReplyDeleteI 'need' my weekly Godzilla movie fix.....or I'm one nasty customer!
lol
I can watch Godilla and Universal monster flicks all day long. LOL I just don't see the point in anther remake of the Blob. What happened to creativity and originality.
ReplyDeleteNow simmer down boys. We can all play nice.
ReplyDeleteYou know that I have hitched my horse to the 'there's no original ideas in Hollywood' cart here many times.
If you are looking for something that didn't come from a 'cookie-cutter' than you have to go independent.
