A famed "Star Trek" captain's romantic conquests have come to life in a new illustrated book.

The new book showcases all the women Capt. James T. Kirk of the original "Star Trek" kissed over the course of the show, which ran from 1966 to 1969. Advertised on the crowdfunding website Kickstarter, "Ladies of Kirk" more than quadrupled its $2,500 goal, reaching $11,253.

"Part celebration of the women of Trek, part loving parody of our favorite Captain, 'Ladies of Kirk' is a fully illustrated original art book," the project's artist, Kelley McMorris, said on the book's Kickstarter page.

"Brilliant lawyer Areel, shape-shifting telepath Sylvia, wholesome Edith Keeler — they're all here," she wrote. "One captain, 19 women, one book."

The 6 inch by 9 inch (15 centimeters by 23 centimeters), 42-page full-color book includes 19 illustrations and a short summary of every character.

McMorris describes herself as a professional illustrator who grew up loving "Star Trek." "I was impressed by the sheer diversity of these women, in their personalities, employment, motivations and costumes," she wrote.

As the campaign progressed, McMorris added more perks for the backers: At $4,300 in total donations, all backers who contributed at least $15 were entitled to a bookmark with Kirk on one side and the crewmember Spock on the other. At $8,600, she added a downloadable coloring book.

The campaign runs just weeks after the actor who played Kirk, William Shatner, tweeted a fan-driven pictorial tribute to Spock's actor (Leonard Nimoy). Nimoy died earlier this year at age 83; the men were lifelong friends after co-starring in the series.

"Star Trek" lives on through several fan campaigns (such as "Star Trek: Axanar") and in Hollywood; a new film from the rebooted series is expected to be released in 2016.

Kirk famously commanded the Enterprise and her namesake over the course of three decades, but it was her historic five-year mission from 2265 to 2270 that made him a legend in space exploration. In addition to his overall mission statement, "to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life, etc.", Kirk received standing orders to investigate all quasars, and quasar-like phenomena. Kirk's living quarters aboard the Enterprise were on Deck 5, room "3F 121". (TOS: "The Galileo Seven", "Journey to Babel"; VOY: "Q2") During this historic mission, Kirk violated the Prime Directive on at least one occasion in order to ensure the survival of the Pelosian race. Years prior to this, Kirk also prevented the extinction of the Baezians and the Chenari. (VOY: "Q2")

Kirk's first major step, attempting an extra-galactic probe in 2265, proved to be a disaster. Discovering a recorder-marker from the SS Valiant that described a catastrophic disaster following a visit to the galaxy's edge, Kirk pushed on, and encountered the galactic barrier for his first time. The Enterprise failed to breach the barrier, and barely escaped destruction. With warp engines badly damaged, Enterprise limped under impulse power towards the Delta Vega lithium cracking station. Kirk's helmsman, his best friend Gary Mitchell, began a transformation triggered by the barrier, developing psychic powers that progressed rapidly, with a commensurate loss of his Humanity. Ignoring Spock's advice to destroy Mitchell immediately, Kirk hesitated until after Mitchell killed navigator Lee Kelso. On the surface of Delta Vega, Kirk hunted Mitchell, only able to kill him with the help of another officer undergoing the same transformation as Mitchell, Dr. Elizabeth Dehner. EPIX is having a Star Trek Fest this weekend, which will include the world television premiere of Star Trek Into Darkness, as well as select Star Trek films, documentaries, and commentaries.

Star Trek Fest on the EPIX television channel begins on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at 6AM EST with The Captains Close-Up: William Shatner: An EPIX Original Documentary, and continues for 24 hours with the first five Star Trek films (some of which will have encore presentations), the aforementioned Star Trek Into Darkness, and more Close-Up features and other EPIX original Star Trek content, like A Conversation With Leonard Nimoy. Throughout the marathon, there will be special segments with Star Trek actor George Takei.

Star Trek’s Capt Kirk turns down Branson’s space flight invitation because he’s scared of flying

As Captain James T Kirk he was ready to boldly go where no man has gone before.

But it's been claimed that William Shatner turned down the chance to travel into space aboard Virgin Galactic's Spaceship Two because he's scared of flying.

Virgin tycoon Sir Richard Branson said he offered the original Star Trek star the opportunity to be among the first extraterrestrial tourists because of his links with space.

But the billionaire said the 82-year-old Canadian actor turned down the offer because he's scared to take to the skies.

'He actually said he's frightened of airline travel - which is slightly disillusioning. Captain Kirk is scared of flying,' the Sun quoted Sir Richard as saying.

Star Trek: 7 Reasons Families On A Starship Are A Bad Idea

James T Kirk, was surely the very model of a 23rd-century progressive and understanding man of the future. He may have been a staunch advocate of maternity flexi-time and equal rights for women but, spreading intergalactic progeny throughout one’s starship, be it the Enterprise, Enterprise-D or Voyager, should not be accommodated in the Star Fleet Code of Conduct.

To seek out new life, when digitally inscribed by Star Fleet Command, presumably implied that the new life would be found outside the ship, not popping left, right and centre inside the ship. There is a comments box if you dare to disagree.

The following arguments are based on the logic of families on starships, please do not mistake flippancy for misogyny… this is my first article and I’d like to make it to a second!

7. Does No-one Remember The Titanic?

Shall I compare these ships? Let me count the ways. A landmark voyage, on a state of the art vessel with a course set for a distant destination it would never reach, carrying families, men women and children. Hmm… familiar.

Let’s not quibble on StarFleet contingency plans for escape pods, but we all know the kerfuffle that would be caused when the call for “women and children first” is announced after something disastrous occurs with accompanying red lights and juddery cinematography. Let’s be honest, it happened every episode.

Imagine Kirk at this point is elbowing his way to the pods, while Spock and Tuvok are holding back, admiring the logic of the protocol. It would be carnage. Women and children dragged out of bed every other day because the hull has been breached… again.

Spare a thought for the indeterminate-gendered characters. What do sentient humanoids such as The Doctor (Robert Picardo), Data or Seven of Nine do? OK, I think the costume department stress the ex-Borg’s assets, but she is part machine. There wouldn’t be much time for any full debate on advanced gender roles. The crisis red-lighting is probably not the best environment for one anyway.

Star Trek The Motion Picture: 10 Reasons It’s Underrated

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is one of the most underrated films in the entire franchise. It’s the first one, and is almost instantly overshadowed by the second. It’s a severely flawed movie in many ways, with long, dull stretches of not really very much happening. But it’s also got some amazingly good things going for it; things that make it, in many ways, one of the best of the Trek films and arguably one of the best pure sci-fi films ever made.

First, some background. The movie was made because of Star Wars. That’s it. That’s the only reason. Star Wars happened and Paramount said, “Holy crap, look at the buckets of cash that’s making! We want in on that!” Star Trek was already in development to be a new series called Star Trek: Phase Two, something I think in retrospect we can be thankful never happened.

The movie was quickly cobbled together, an amazing director was hired, and filming began. Then said amazing director, Robert Wise, who had worked as an editor on a little indie film called Citizen Kane, was given about three weeks to edit the movie. The end result was something less than perfect, but later he was given a chance to reedit it, and turned out something far better, and very much worth seeing.

IDW To Launch New Star Trek Comic Series In September

Classic Star Trek: The Original Series episodes reimagined in the new universe

The Star Trek universe will never be the same following the events of the game-changing, blockbuster 2009 film. Beginning with STAR TREK #1 in September, IDW Publishing and CBS Consumer Products join forces with Star Trek writer/producer Roberto Orci to explore the vast implications of the alternate timeline created by the film in a new, monthly, ongoing comics series.

"Movies cost money. Lots and lots of money," said Orci. "But comics give us unlimited budgets to take the crew of the Enterprise farther than they've ever been. Join us!"

The adventures of the Starship Enterprise continue with the new cast from the film as they embark on missions that re-imagine the stories from the original television series, along with new threats and characters never seen before.

Under the creative direction of Orci, fan-favorite STAR TREK writer Mike Johnson and artist Stephen Molnar bring this alternate universe to life and begin the countdown to the highly anticipated Star Trek sequel. The series kicks off with a dramatic new envisioning of The Original Series second pilot, "Where No Man Has Gone Before."

"Finally, new STAR TREK comics that showcase the new Enterprise crew," said editor Scott Dunbier. "The only thing more fun than reading them is editing them!"

STAR TREK #1 will feature covers from Tim Bradstreet and David Messina, plus four rare photo covers. Readers are encouraged to talk to their local retailer about the photo covers, and the super rare STAR TREK #1 signed by Orci and Johnson. The debut issue will also feature a golden ticket promotion, with more details to come shortly from IDW.

It's Kirk And Spock vs Zombies in STAR TREK: INFESTATION

It seems that zombies are everywhere these days and the comic book publisher IDW has let the undead critters run rampant through their titles for the month of February. They have even sent them into deep space to tangle with the beloved crew of the Starship Enterprise.

Yes Kirk, Spock, Bones and the gang will be up to their tribbles in zombies in "Star Trek: Infestation" a two-part spin-off series. According to IDW "Infestation" will put the movie era Enterprise crew into a darker realm then they have ever been before, fighting off hordes of the undead.

"Star Trek: Infestation" is written by David and Scott Tipton and features art by Casey Maloney. In true comic book marketing form, the first issue will feature four different covers by John K. Snyder III, Jason Wright, Casey Maloney, Gary Erskine, Luis Antonio Delgado, Gabriel Rodriguez and Gordon Purcell.

The 32-page book is scheduled to be released on Wednesday (February 9th) and will set you back $3.99 .... that is unless you have to have all four covers then that's a little under $12.

Fear not zombie fans, the undead are also causing mayhem in the IDW comics G.I. Joe, Transformers and Ghostbusters in February as well.
