In the summer of 1988, a chilling encounter unfolded that would become etched into the annals of folklore. Sixteen-year-old Christopher Davis found himself in a terrifying nightmare while changing a flat tire near the ominous Scape Ore Swamp in South Carolina. Returning home after his late shift at McDonald's, the evening took a disastrous turn as Davis's car blew a tire in the desolate Browntown area, perilously close to the murky waters of the swamp. 

Tales of the Unexplained - Are Lizard Men Living Among Us?

As most of you already know, I have an incredible fascination with monsters and strange creatures of lore, mythology, cryptozoology, television and of course movies.

Now today I was planning to write an article about one of the lesser known cryptids that have been seen all over the world, Lizard Men. My article was going to focus on the history of sightings here in California, and their possible link to the lost continents of Mu or Lemuria.

Mu and Lemuria are basically the Pacific Oceans' very own versions of Atlantis, to make a long story short.

Now, you may think that this is some sort of coincidence, but while I was skimming through the news on Google this morning I came across a story about a Lizard Man written by J.S. Holland for Louisville Mojo.

That's weird that I came across a story about Lizard Men on the very same day that I was going to write my own.

Some of you may say that this was some sort of fate, a cosmic connection, others will simply dismiss this as randomness. I however believe that all things happen do to plan, whether that be by God's plan or not.

Now to get to the meat of the J.S. Holland piece. It seems that way back on October 28th, 1878, there was an article in the Courier-Journal (Louisville) about a scaly "Wild Man of the Woods" that had been captured and put on display.

When one generally hears the term, "Wild Man", images of a Sasquatch or Bigfoot normally comes to mind, this creature, however, was far different. According to the original article, this strange being was about 6-foot-tall, with large eyes, and covered with scales.

This strange lizard-like humanoid was reportedly displayed in Louisville for some time before, like the "Minnesota Ice Man” and the Bigfoot captured by railroad employees around the turn of the century in Canada, it disappeared never to be seen again.

I should be noted that 'hoaxed' newspaper stories were very popular in the 1800s. Articles concocted to stimulate the public and boost newspaper sales. The more wild and unbelievable the better. However, according to Holland (I didn't read the article myself) the 1878 story in question was treated rather matter-of-factually despite its outlandish subject matter.."

Does that add any credence to the validity of the article? Probably not.

Regardless, this 1878 account of a "Lizard Man" is not unique, not on a worldwide scale, or even for the American south.

In June of 1988, a sixteen-year-old boy named Christopher Davis was attacked by a 7-foot-tall, scaly monster, while changing a flat tire near the Scape Ore Swamp in South Carolina.

The "Lizard Man of Scape Ore Swamp" (also known as the Lizard Man of Lee County) reportedly tried to attack the youth's car as he tried to escape.

In the following months after the attack other local residents reported sightings and other attacks on vehicles. Seems this "Lizard-Man" wasn't much of a car buff.

Reports of the creature, and sometimes creatures, continue to this day in the area, the latest being reported in 2005 and 2008.

Other areas of the country that seem to be home to lizard-like humanoids include Loveland, Ohio (The Loveland Frog), Thetis Lake, British Columbia, Canada (Thetis Lake Monster) and also here in my home state of California.


Is there really a race of "Creature from the Black Lagoon" like "Gill-Men" living in obscurity in North America?

Good question?

Though these things aren't seen with near the regularity of the Sasquatch or Bigfoot the reports may be worth some investigation.

Local legends of lizard-like races come from various periods of human history. There is the Cecrops, the mythical first King of Athens who was half-man-half-snake, the Dragon Kings of Chinese mythology, the Nāga in India and the Zahhak, a figure from Zoroastrian mythology, just to touch on a few.

One of the predominant theories about these creatures is that they are extraterrestrial in origin ( an aliens race from another world). Indeed there have been numerous reports of lizard-like aliens emerging from UFOs.

Many authors about UFO encounters have postulated that these guys are here to start a colony, but if that's true then they have either been really slow about it or they are already living here.

Food for thought for now though I do promise to write about all the California "Lizard Men" sightings as time permits.

Things That Go Bump In The Night The Mill Race Park Monster

The Mill Race Park Monster is a beast that was purportedly seen in Columbus, Indiana in 1974. It launched what is considered by some people to be the largest monster hunt in US history. It has been described by witnesses as bipedal, between six to seven feet tall, and having a mossy green appearance.

Initial Sightings

On November 1st, 1974, the police department in Columbus, Indiana received reports from at least two sets of eyewitnesses who claimed to have seen and even possibly been attacked by a huge green-skinned monster by the water inside Mill Race Park.

The first report involved four young women whose names were not released by the police department. At about 3 PM, one of the women spotted the monster between two trees in the park. The group was able to escape and immediately reported their encounter to the police. They stated they had seen a "green, hairy, and large" creature.

The second report involved a pair of women unrelated to the first group, and who were also supposedly unaware of the sighting that had previously been reported. Tyra Cataline, one of those women, later came forward in 2014 on the show Monsters and Mysteries in America. She also told her story in 2015 on a local Fox News station, a full 41 years after the fact. She told them, "It was something. I don't know what it was, but it wasn't somebody wearing a costume."

Cataline's report also described the monster as having slime on its face and possessing large claws. The women claimed to have been attacked, and their car had scratch marks and a stench as a result of that attack.

The Word Spreads

On November 2nd, 1974, the newspaper The Republic printed a story titled "Monster - Women Report Seeing 'Beast' in Mill Race," which detailed both reported encounters. On November 6th, The Republic printed another report which involved two men in their 20s. In this report, the newspaper officially called the creature the "Mill Race Monster."

On November 9th, 1974, another newspaper, the Indianapolis Star, wrote a report of yet another encounter, this time involving two city dogcatchers, Rick Duckworth and John Brown.

Duckworth claimed he attempted to chase the monster after it ran from them. He also claimed after the fact that it was not a monster at all, but merely a large man "wearing a green mask and green blankets."

It was after this report that that amateur monster hunters and curiosity seekers began to pour into the area. One night, there was even supposedly over 100 cars in the park due to this influx of people.

Crowd Control

There were so many people hunting for the Mill Race Monster that it soon became necessary for local law enforcement to respond. On November 8th, 1974, the director of the city park, Robert Gillikin, stated that, "It may become necessary to close the park to the public at night, not because of the 'monster' but because of the public."

Gillikin followed through with his statement, and the park was closed to the public at night soon after. Police were also stationed around all entrances in order to prevent people attempting to hunt the Mill Race Monster from entering. The Columbus Police Department even unofficially appointed Officer Kenneth St. John as "Monster Control Officer."

Conclusion

No one has ever confirmed whether or not the Mill Race Monster was fake, as Duckworth claimed, despite all the attempts by multiple people to hunt it. One interesting element to add into the mix, however, was that in the story initially printed by The Republic on November 6th, one of the two unnamed men speculated that because there had been UFOs supposedly seen over the area as well, the Mill Race Park Monster might have been of alien origin.

Sightings have continued up to the present day. The story run by the Fox News station featuring Tyra Cataline was prompted by a report on October 10th, 2015 from a local hunter. He claimed to have seen a bigfoot-like creature, which may or may not have been related to the Mill Race Monster, in the Morgan-Monroe State Forest in Martinsville, Indiana.

The fact that there has been such a recent reported sighting shows that the Mill Race Monster's notoriety has continued, and like any good monster story, it is unlikely the legend will go away any time soon.

A BIZARRE creature sparked terror on the shores after beachgoers failed to identify what was heading their way.

Video footage shows the mysterious incident that occurred over this weekend.

One man, identified as George, was enjoying a day out on Huntington Beach in California, US, when he was faced with an unusual scene.

The clip shows the “human-like” animal as it breaches the surface of the water.

An arm appears to be raised and you can make out what looks like a face too.

“And that is exactly why I never go in the sea,” one admitted.

Another added: “Did the Loch Ness Monster go on holiday?”

And a third claimed: “Mermaid/Merman. Looks part human. But then again, nowadays, who knows?”

One of the highest grossing films in Japan that year was "Cyborg She" (My Girlfriend Is A Cyborg), so it is no surprise that the film's lead actress, Haruka Ayase, would be a sought after commodity. Haruka found working on the film to be a challenge due to the language barrier between her and Korean movie director, Jae-Yong Kwak. "Mr Kwak taught me acting through gestures and facial emotions." Ayase also took a very playful approach to her robot character, "“Because I don’t have an opportunity to punch men, I enjoyed doing it during production.” I'm sure there are a lot of men out there that are happy that she got to live that fantasy out on the set.

Now male fans worldwide will want their very own Haruka Ayase cyborg. I guess it's time to trade in my "Lucy Liu Bot" for a new model!

2008: Murphy As The Riddler? Weisz As Catwoman? Labeouf As Robin? Here We Go Again!

You know that Batman sequel that Christopher Nolan has been denying for months, well now it reportedly has a cast and a title. According to sources close to Nolan, the film will be titled, "Gotham" and will feature Rachel Weisz as Catwoman, Eddie Murphy as The Riddler and Shia Labeouf as Batman's trusted sidekick Robin.

As recently as October Nolan was making public statements that he wasn't sure that he even wanted to make a third Batman movie, worrying that he couldn't pull off a decent film.

Things reportedly changed in the Nolan camp, and changed in a hurry.

Weisz is the latest of the names to associated with the Catwoman character. For months it was believed that Angelina Jolie was the front-runner for the part. At one time even Cher's name was reported to be on the short-list. Weisz, however, now seems to be a lock.

It is interesting to note that Christopher Nolan didn't want to do a third film because third films generally "suck" (Those are his words), yet by bringing in three new characters, he seems to be following the same formula for disaster. Fans often refer to the adding too many elements into one films as the "Too Many Villains Syndrome." What generally happens here is that too many new characters get put into one film, limiting their character development, which bogs down the films plot. Examples of this are, "Spider-man 3", "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin." Fans generally point out that the best superhero films almost always feature one villain.

2009: Allison Scagliotti

Just like last year's top cutie, Haruka Ayase, this years favorite, Allison Scagliotti, is more of a down to Earth, girl-next-door type.

I guess that this just goes to prove that what guys are 'really' looking for is a girl they can take home to mom.

Am I right guys?.....guys?.....guess I lost a few there.


Anyway, "Warehouse 13" is huge hit for the SyFy Channel and the fact that Scagliotti is on the show, certainly helped the actress capture our number one.

On "Warehouse 13" Scagliotti plays Claudia Donovan, a young, hip, brilliant techno-wiz, who manages to successfully breach the Warehouse's complex security system in order to track down Artie (Rubinek). With a natural aptitude for science and technology, Donovan's talents enable her to manipulate and activate many of the objects contained in the Warehouse to help the Team.

2010: GHOST ADVENTURES - Zak Bagans, Nick Grof And Aaron Goodwin At Comic Con 2010

Like I mentioned in my previous article, my experience at Comic Con was a little 'different' than that of the 'typical' fan. Instead of lusting after the 'trendy' movies and shows, my family and I were excited about a lot of things that weren't so mainstream.

One of these was the television series, "Ghost Adventures", and my wife April, son Christopher and I were really looking forward to meeting the shows stars Zak Bagans, Nick Grof and Aaron Goodwin at an autograph signing later in the afternoon.

As luck would have it, the very same people, Zak, Nick and Aaron,that we so strongly wanted to see, arrived at the convention at the exact same time that we did. Amazingly, they were just milling around in the area adjacent to the check-in and autograph areas. To our delite, we were able to snap a few photos and talk to Aaron for a few seconds. My wife was very happy to have told him that 'he was the shit!'

To our surprise, no one else even recognised them.

2010: The First Look At Roger Corman's 'Dinoshark'

Isn't it wonderful that giant mutant monsters are popular again. After J.J. Abrams unleashed his giant monster movie, "Cloverfield", in theaters two years ago, there has been a non-stop parade of independent features where the motto, "bigger is better", has really been taken seriously.

Last year, The Asylum, made a huge media splash with their film "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus". The film featured former 80s pop sensation, Debbie Gibson, playing second fiddle to a titanic shark and an equally gigantic octopus. Likewise, films of the same vein like, "Dinocroc vs. Supergator", "Megaconda," and even The Asylum's follow-up to "Mega Shark", called "Megapiranha", were all rushed into production by the end of 2009.

Now it seems that the king of B movie monsters, Roger Corman, was feeling a little left-out by all of this, so he has developed his own giant monster film for the SyFy Channel called, "Dinoshark."

Lets see....Megaconda....Dinocrock.....Mega Shark........Dinoshark. Makes perfect sense in the grand scheme of things, doesn't it?

2012: Dynamite Baby, Grindhouse Dynamite!

Grindhouse is an American term for a theater that mainly shows exploitation films. Named after the defunct burlesque theaters located on 42nd Street in New York City where 'bump n' grind' or striptease was featured.

Grindhouse films characteristically contain large amounts of sex, violence or bizarre subject matter. One genre of film featured were "roughies" or sexploitation, a mix of sex, violence and sadism. Quality varied, but low budget production values and poor print quality were common. Critical opinions varied regarding typical grindhouse fare, but many films acquired cult following and critical praise. Double, triple, and "all night" bills on a single admission charge often encouraged patrons to spend a long time in the theater. The environment was faithfully captured at the time by the magazine ‘Sleazoid Express’.

By the 1980s, home video and cable threatened to make grindhouse obsolete. By the end of the decade, these theaters had vanished from Los Angeles's Broadway and Hollywood Boulevard, New York City's Times Square and San Francisco's Market Street. By the mid-1990s, these particular theaters had all but disappeared from the United States and very few are in existence today.

Of course the search didn't turn up any man-fish at the time yet reports of the aptly named "Thetis Lake Monster" continued on for two more decades.

Initially the reported sighting was blamed on an escaped pet Tegu lizard which can grow to the size of a small alligator. That explanation seemed to be enough for most people but some hardcore cryptid hunters believed the creature to be a relative of the legendary "Loveland Frog" (another reported man-fish) or just another of the numerous lizard-man sightings from across North America. As most monster historians (or uber geeks like me) know lizard-men are reported to live under the mountains and cities here in California and in the swamps of South Carolina most notably.

Is there a REAL "Gill-Man" in Thetis Lake?

Well .... probably not.

In 2009 a reporter for the "Junior Skeptic Magazine" (Daniel Loxton) tracked down one of the original witnesses named Russell Van Nice who finally fessed up to hoaxing the whole affair with his buddy Mike Gold to get a little attention. Van Nice also mentioned that their description of the creature had been taken from the film "Monster From The Surf" (Beach Girls and the Monster) which had aired the prior weekend on a local television station.

Funny that no one noticed that little tidbit at the time ... then again there were probably very few people over the age of ten watching Monster from the Surf that day? Of course I would have been one of those people ... and odds are you would have been too.

Well no need to go to Canada (eh) to look for lizard-men ... guess I'll just go back to searching the catacombs here under Los Angeles. Reportedly they got a city made of gold down there!

Has The Lizard Man Returned From The Swamp To Terrorize SC?

There's something roaming the woods of South Carolina and it's got incredibly sharp teeth and hates parked cars.

Somewhere between a Sleestack and a Sasquatch lies the infamous "Lizard Man" of South Carolina a reported monster that may have returned after taking a lengthy hiatus.

Back in the summer of 1988 a 17-year-old boy had stopped along a rural road to change a flat tire when he noticed something big running toward him. The creature that the young man described sounded like something resembling the Gorn from "Star Trek", a large 7-foot-tall upright running lizard creature with glowing red eyes. The youth took off running in the opposite direction, but when he did muster up the courage to return to his vehicle he discovered that it had been clawed and ransacked.

On Monday morning (July 4th) Leon Marshal of rural Lee County, South Carolina discovered that his car had also been attacked by some sort of mysterious animal.

"I ran into the house and told my wife to call the police because something happened to the car," he explains.

"The tooth marks went completely through the fender. That's metal! And it just bent it up. Like it was a piece of tissue paper," added his wife Ada.

This rather odd incident sounds eerily familiar to former Lee County Sheriff Liston Truesdale, "This part here is how it all started in 88. We got a call to come and look at something that had mauled a car. I went out there and looked at that damaged car, and I haven't seen anything like that before."

"They had been seeing a large creature about 7 feet tall, with big red eyes, with three pointed fingers."

"So I started asking residents, 'have you seen anything like a big tall creature round there? And the guys said, 'what you mean that lizard man?' That's how it started and you got it from the horse's mouth."

Ever since that time the "Lizard Man" has become a local celebrity of sorts that has certainly helped the areas tourist trade. Many a monster hunter / fan has ventured into Lee County to try and spot a glimpse of the creature.

Whether the monster is real or imaginary has not been proven but there is something in the Carolina woods that hates cars for some reason and attacks them whenever possible. One thing is for certain whatever it is it has huge strong jaws and teeth that can bite through solid metal and claws that can ruin a paint job. Lizard Man, giant gator, predatory mammal, dinosaur or what have you this thing is something you wouldn't want to run into on a dark night that's for sure!

Lizard Men aren't just exclusive to rural South Carolina. On the opposite coast, in California, reports of humanoid reptiles have been reported for decades. In the 40s a fortune hunter claimed that a race of lizard people had built a labyrinth of tunnels filled with gold under Los Angeles. Likewise in the 50s a man almost hit a Lizard Man on a road in Riverside. On top of that Lizard Men have been reportedly seen on the slopes of Mt. Shasta.

THE LEGEND OF THE LOVELAND FROGMEN - Premiere Info

Some small independent films never get the kind of grand premieres that big-budget Hollywood films do. Instead of star-studded events at the Pantages, Cinerama Dome, Egyptian or Grauman's Chinese Theatre, these smaller films normally get their first viewing at a local movie house or drive-in.

When you are a high school film maker then, sometimes, your school auditorium will have to do.

No there won't be any stretch limos, or A-list celebrities at the premiere of Gretchen Kessler's, "The Legend of the Loveland Frogmen", but if the young film maker continues on this path, they may be showing up for one or more of her films screenings in the future.

Kessler chose a very popular local legend for her first film and even got her family involved in the production.

The young film maker notes, “Almost everyone in Loveland has heard of the alleged "frogman" that likes to terrorize the local police force late at night, but now my dad and I have made a movie about it.”

You can always count on good old dad to help out his little angel.

Here is the plot for "The Legend of the Loveland Frogmen":

A group of high schoolers are paddling down the Little Miami River. It is getting late, and they realize they are not going to be able to make it to the takeout. They see a bonfire on the shore and go to see who is there. There are strange shapes around the fire ring, and one girl thinks she sees a creature that looks half-human and half-frog!

The creatures, whatever they are, flee, and the teens are confronted by a disgruntled old man, who tells them to get off his property. They realize they have arrived at the Loveland Castle.

The kids go home and do some research, finding out about the Loveland Frogman. Convinced this is what they saw, they return to the Castle to snoop around and see if they can find any traces of Frogmen. They take a tour, and slip away to the dungeons to look around. They hear strange noises, but just as they are nearing the source, the tour guide discovers them and kicks them out.

They wander down to the fire ring, and as they are looking around, one of the girls slips and falls in the river. "Something" in the river pushes her back onto the bank. She sputters this to her friends, which convinces them the Frogmen are real.

They return once more, that night. They want to see the Frogmen for real, since they seem to come out at night. Down at the fire ring, they see the old man again. They ask him about the Frogmen, but for each account they have of Frogmen encounters, he has a counter-argument. He finally convinces them there is no Frogman, and they leave. The last shot is of the old man, with a fly buzzing around his head. Suddenly his tongue flies out and he catches the fly and eats it!!

Is Gretchen Kessler the next Sam Raimi or Wes Craven? Well that is to be seen, but the plot for her little 30-minute film sounds pretty darn good, so...............you never know.

One of America's most bizarre urban legends is that of the Loveland frogs, or frogmen as they are sometimes called. The first sighting was of strange creatures seen under a bridge, and the witness sounded as if he could not decide whether he had seen fairy-tale trolls, reptoids or things that were half human, half frog.

Later sightings were less confused, but still contained inconsistencies. Witnesses claimed that what they had seen was certainly frog-like, but they disagreed on the details. Some reported human-sized frogmen, some reported tiny frog-sized frogmen, and some reported just plain giant frogs with no noticeable human features.

This may sound like a really stupid legend, but there was enough evidence, including tracks, that both the police and the FBI investigated (probably with the theory that it was pranksters in costumes). Of course, cryptozoologists and all sorts of paranormal investigators became interested too.

The Loveland frogs continue to be sighted at irregular intervals along the Ohio River and the Little Miami River. They got their moniker from the town of Loveland, Ohio, near most of the sightings. Today cryptozoologists have little interest in these creatures. After all, they sound absurd, just like most humanoids that are not some kind of Bigfoot or a closely related hairy humanoid.

The Tragically Funny Story Of 'The Lizard Boy'

I know that the title for this article looks like it was taken straight off of the Weekly World News or some other grocery store rag, but I assure you that it pertains to a movie.

No, really, a horror movie.

Surprised?

Well, it looks like another independent film director, in this case, Paul Della, has chosen to explore what kind of mayhem can happen when man tries to play God.

And what generally happens when someone tries to play God?

um.......bad stuff?

Correct!

To be persice, a government funded scientist creates a half-man-half-lizard who goes on the warpath in a small town.

Here is the synopsis:

A small mountain town is terrorized by a half-man, half-reptile creature when renowned geneticist, Dr. Gino Conti, contracted by the Defense Sciences Office to develop a top-secret hybrid animal, pursues personal experiments in an effort to reconcile his tragic past. An entertaining sci-fi thriller with plenty of action, drama, humor and bits of gore, Lizard Boy raises questions about modern genetics while harkening back to the monster movies of old.

Della describes his film as a “sci-fi tragicomedy”, which seems to fit the bill considering our "Lizard Boy" is a poor outcast....with wicked ninja skills.

A lizard-ninja? Are we sure that this thing didn't come from the Weekly World News? .....yeh, we checked.

Speaking of tabloids, it is interesting to note that Lizard Men have been seen all over this country, mostly in South Carolina. I don't think that any of those reports mentioned the creatures kicking asses like ninjas. Then again, who would report that? People would think that you are crazy or something........lol......ahem.
