You know that Batman sequel that Christopher Nolan has been denying for months, well now it reportedly has a cast and a title. According to sources close to Nolan, the film will be titled, "Gotham" and will feature Rachel Weisz as Catwoman, Eddie Murphy as The Riddler and Shia Labeouf as Batman's trusted sidekick Robin.
As recently as October Nolan was making public statements that he wasn't sure that he even wanted to make a third Batman movie, worrying that he couldn't pull off a decent film.
Things reportedly changed in the Nolan camp, and changed in a hurry.
Weisz is the latest of the names to associated with the Catwoman character. For months it was believed that Angelina Jolie was the front-runner for the part. At one time even Cher's name was reported to be on the short-list. Weisz, however, now seems to be a lock.
It is interesting to note that Christopher Nolan didn't want to do a third film because third films generally "suck" (Those are his words), yet by bringing in three new characters, he seems to be following the same formula for disaster. Fans often refer to the adding too many elements into one films as the "Too Many Villains Syndrome." What generally happens here is that too many new characters get put into one film, limiting their character development, which bogs down the films plot. Examples of this are, "Spider-man 3", "Batman Forever" and "Batman & Robin." Fans generally point out that the best superhero films almost always feature one villain.
"Gotham" is scheduled to hit theaters in 2010.

Interesting! I really like Rachel Weisz. She's beautiful and a very talented actress. Labeouf has been in so many big hits lately that I'm not surprised to see him. I don't know about Eddie Murphy though. He hasn't had a hit in quite a while and he's a little washed up. Maybe he'll surprise me though. I loved the last movie. Nolan will have a hard time living up to expectations, but I'm looking forward to it! Thanks for the info!
ReplyDeleteI just got an e-mail from a fan who directed me to articles on the Cinemablend and Batman-On-Film sites that are saying the whole Murphy and LaBeouf casting rumors are false. They do, however back the Rachel Weisz as Catwoman news.
ReplyDeleteNo word on the "Gotham" title as of yet.
The source for the WENN article that I used for my information included this quote from their (un-named) source: "Chris wasn.t sure if he wanted to do another movie but as soon as he decided to, he got the wheels in motion. Eddie.s a fantastic addition. Everyone.s excited to see what he does as the Riddler.. "
Was someone feeding them BS? Who knows?
Such is the rumor game.
You seem to be putting a lot of faith in The Sun. I know you say you're source is WENN, but their source was The Sun, the same reputable source that claimed Cher would be the next Catwoman. I would bet a fortune that every fact you quote in this post end up being incorrect.
ReplyDeleteI am not even sure how someone could believe this type of a rumor. Who would ever imagine Murphy as the Joker? BUT, I have to say it is getting so much attention, the movie seems already to be a big hit... it won't live up to Dark Knight though, no matter who plays the Joker: http://www.everhype.com/?utm_source=bc
ReplyDeleteGod I hope so! Could you imagine Eddie Murphy as The Riddler? How lame would that be?
ReplyDeleteOkay lets get these out of our system now.
Eddie Murphy Riddler Quotes:
Riddle me this....hee...hee...hee (Murphy Laugh)
I...I....I...I....want the Bat............please
I'm The Riddler Damnit!
Labeouf as Robin would also be lame.
Rachel Weisz as the Catwoman! Now that would be cool. I think that would work. Weisz really melts my butter!
The Sun?....really? Well that explains it.
I actually read that Cher bit in People Magazine.....go figure.
Okay, now Murphy's people are debunking the rumor...
ReplyDeleteHere is an update from WENN:
A representative for Eddie Murphy's denied the actor will take on the role of The Riddler in a new Batman movie.
Earlier this week a British tabloid newspaper claimed the Beverly Hills Cop star would take on the villainous quizmaster character in the latest outing in the Caped Crusader franchise.
The part was made famous by Jim Carrey in 1995's Batman Forever.
And the publication also suggested actor Shia Labeouf would play young crimefighter Robin, alongside returning Batman Christian Bale.
But Murphy's representative has refuted the claims, telling Access Hollywood the reports are "not true".
The movie, tentatively titled Gotham, is slated for a 2010 release.
Hey folks, I just write about the news....
