Brains' Watch Replica First In New Thunderbirds' Range

Planet Replicas has joined forces with ITV Studios Global Entertainment to produce a range of Classic Thunderbirds Prop Replicas.

Thunderbirds is a classic TV series full of excitement and stunning designs, and we are extremely excited to have the opportunity to produce a range of product from such a prestigious IP,” said Daniel Carey-George, Creative Director at Planet Replicas Ltd.

Planet Replicas' first release will be a limited edition replica of the wrist watch worn by Brains, taken from the episode Day of Disaster.

“We are looking forward to taking a fresh approach to the range, and as Thunderbirds is 50 years old this year, we wanted our first product to mark the occasion. A cool, retro styled watch is a perfect way to commemorate this.”

Planet Replicas Ltd will launch the first product in early Q3, with more from the range to follow soon after.

Firefly Or Serenity? The Choice Is Yours!

From QMx

You asked – and we're delivering.

When we first announced our Serenity Hull Art Artisan Replica based on the Firefly TV series version of the iconic transport ship (right), fans went wild. The hand-painted, hand-finished piece — made of aircraft-grade aluminum - looks literally like a chip off the old boat. Lots of folks immediately signed up on our waiting list.

There's plenty of love for the Firefly version, several variants of which were created for the show. But probably the most remembered version, and the one many Browncoats asked for after we announced this Hull Art Replica, is the one Inara personally paints in Serenity. So we've added that version as an option as well.

That's the beauty of handmade artisan products: Our U.S.-based team can respond quickly to your feedback!

A "most impressive" addition to your Star Wars collection!

With this Star Wars TIE Fighter Replica, one of the Galactic Empire's deadliest ships is yours to own! Scanned from an actual screen-used model used during the making of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, this TIE Fighter FX Model will be a "most impressive" addition to your Star Wars collection! The Star Wars Episode IV Imperial TIE Fighter Replica is a limited edition not to exceed 1,000 pieces that measures 17 3/4-inches tall x 13 3/4-inches wide x 14 1/8-inches long. Constructed of high-quality resin, injection-molded ABS, and machined metal, it features LED lighting effects and includes a numbered plaque and certificate of authenticity. It's truly awesome!

In order to make the most accurate replica of this iconic ship, a number of different reference resources were used. More than 90% of the model kit parts that were used on the original model were identified. A digital scan of a TIE model in the Lucasfilm archives was used to map the parts, verify the dimensions, and scratch build the model kit parts that either could not be found or identified. An original TIE Fighter that is known to have been used in the filming of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was used to match the correct colors.

Deployed throughout the galaxy from the hangars of the Galactic Empire's awesome fleet of Star Destroyers and the dreaded Death Star were the standard starfighters of the Imperial arsenal, the Thermal Ion Engine crafts known as the TIE Fighters. These small, one-man, short-range ships were fast and maneuverable, but lacked a hyperdrive and thus had to be deployed from hangars and launch bases. They had two fire-linked laser cannons, mounted on the ball-shaped cockpit.

Industrial Light and Magic's (ILM) Colin Cantwell created the concept model with the iconic ball-shaped cockpit and hexagonal wings. The combat scenes were meant to be reminiscent of World War II dogfight footage, and the film editors used actual World War II air combat footage for the filming of the special effects.

Star Wars Production Notes: R2-D2 (Artoo-Detoo)

Gary Kurtz - "We had about nine different versions of Artoo-Detoo, and each one did specific things. Most of them were mechanical; some were radio-controlled, some were wire-controlled dragging an umbillical cord; and there were two versions that had to be operated by humans because what was required of them was too complicated for mechanical action."

The man inside Artoo was Kenny Baker, a discoverey of production designer John Barry. Baker is 3'8" tall. The tank-like Artoo was tailored to fit him. The actual costume was designed by mechanical-effects man John Stears.</

Star Wars Production Notes: The Sandcrawler

Gary Kurtz - "The long shots of the sandcrawler are a miniature (photo above) - for the shots of it rolling across the desert. We did film a full-sized piece that was about 40 feet high and 125 feet long. We investigated the possibility of using a very large earth mover or some such vehicle - but they were not where we needed them and were also very expensive to rent. We found it was better to do our own. We fabricated the pieces in the studio and shipped them over to Tunisia on trucks on four road-trains - that's what they call truck-trailer combinations in Europe - across the English channel to France and Italy, to Genoa, and across on a ferry to Tunisia."

Star Wars 'Where Science Meets Imagination' Exhibit

Robo Japan begins a week long tribute to "Star Wars" in honor of the upcoming release of "The Clone Wars". Check back daily for more interesting articles from our archives!

On Saturday, March 3, 2007, I had the privilege of being able to visit the 'Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination' exhibit at California Science Center in Los Angeles. My party was in the front of what proved to be a fairly long line of Star Wars fans of all ages that had formed in anticipation of the exhibits 10am opening. We had arrived early in hopes of avoiding the up to 2 hour wait time that the Science Center's web site had warned about. At 10 we were escorted upstairs to the exhibit and quickly began to mill about the exhibits. As you first enter the door you are greeted, to your immediate right, by the Land Speeder from 'A New Hope'. I was personally taken back by the fact that I was standing in the presence of an object that I had seen on film hundreds of times, but thought that I would never actually see in person. My awe would not end there.

Throughout the exhibit are dozens of props and costumes from all six of the Star Wars films with some hands on science experiments thrown into the mix so that the visitor can get a good feel for how Hollywood imagination has lead to genuine scientific advancements. Just about everything a Star Wars fan would want to see is there for the gawking. Behind glass are Luke Skywalkers X-Wing Fighter, the Darth Vader costume from the original Star Wars, the Sandcrawler model, Wookie costumes from 'Revenge of the Sith', they are all here. I could have spent the entire day just staring at the amazing detail that goes into each model and costume. This is the only way, unless you get an invite to Skywalker Ranch, that the average Star Wars fan can view these wonderful items that helped create the Star Wars saga.

What really struck me, was the fact that the exhibit was free! An exhibit of this magnitude could have easily fetched a $10, $20 or even $40 price tag due to sheer number of items that are on display.

For the fans who are lucky enough to live in the Los Angeles area, or have the means to make a trip to the City of Angels, this is a once in a lifetime event that can't be missed.

The 'Star Wars: Where Science Meets Imagination' exhibit runs until April 29, 2007 at the California Science Center in Exhibition Park near downtown Los Angeles. Directions and general information can be found on the Science Center's website HERE.

Here is a collection of some of the many items that are on display:

Millennium Falcon, scale model, from 'The Empire Strikes Back' - It's huge! The detail on it is just amazing.

The Princess Leia costume from 'A New Hope', The R2-D2 costume from the 'original trilogy', and the C3P0 costume from 'Revenge of the Sith'.

"We've spotted Imperial Walkers" - An actual model of an Imperial AT-AT from 'The Empire Strikes Back'

One of the many Y-Wing fighter models used in 'A New Hope'.

The Rebel Blockade Runner model from 'A New Hope'. Yes, the rumors are true, there is a tiny Star Wars poster in the cockpit. You have to look real close to see it due to the low lighting.

The 'life size' Landspeeder from 'A New Hope'. Amazing detail. Looks like you could jump in and drive it home.

An Imperial Tie Fighter model from the 'original trilogy'

Luke Skywalkers X-Wing Fighter model from 'the original trilogy'. I know I'm beating a dead horse but I have to mention the detail on this model. You can clearly see the controls inside the cockpit. It is that detailed.

The Wampa costume from 'The Empire Strikes Back'. I always loved this creature. It was a thrill to be able to see this costume.

The model of Luke Skywalker riding a Tauntaun from 'The Empire Strikes Back'.

The Darth Vader costume from 'A New Hope' that was worn by David Prowse. To say I was in awe of this is an understatement. I was in the presence of the 'Dark Lord of the Sith'!

The Imperial Star Destroyer model from 'A New Hope'. When this ship zoomed over head at the beginning of Star Wars science fiction cinema, in fact all cinema, changed forever.

One again I have to say that seeing these items (there are far more not shown here) was a life long dream come true and I urge any Star Wars, or movie fan in general, to take advantage of this free opportunity that only comes around rarely in a lifetime.
