First we had a hot Japanese girl in a cowboy hat and bikini killing zombies, now we have two busty Japanese girls in skin tight body suites kicking the crap out of people. Is it safe to say that Japanese cinema is going through a renaissance? It is far more likely that the industry has discovered that the only thing cooler than animated women kicking ass in films, are real women kicking ass in films.
Let me introduce you to Honey and Bunny, an elite crime fighting duo known as "Wildcats" who both made their cinematic debut last year in "Himitsu Sennyuu Sousakan: Honey & Bunny." In the sequel, "Himitsu Sennyuu Sousakan: Wildcats in Strip Royale"(Secret Undercover Agent: Wildcats in Strip Royale), actress Reon Kadena will replace Haruna Yubuki and star alongside Yuri Morishita. in the film directed by Keiichi Kobayashi. This will be the first large scale movie role for Kadena, who began her career as a nude photobook model and until recently only made appearances in lingerie and bikini videos. It sure looks like the curvy miss Kadena is moving up in the world.
"Himitsu Sennyuu Sousakan: Wildcats in Strip Royale" is the handy work of director Keiichi Kobyashi, who according to my research, has made his living working on music videos for such artists as Miho Ozeki and Da Pump. I can only imagine that the combination of a music video director and two pin-up queens will make for a film that will be visually stunning. The acting and plot, however, may be a million miles away from "Masterpiece Theatre." This, of course, is absolutely irrelevant, because all anyone really wants to see is Honey and Bunny kicking ass, and the film promises to deliver plenty of that.
I, like most American fans, was first exposed to this kind of Japanese female super hero cinema when I picked up a copy of Hideaki Anno's adaptation of the popular anime, "Cutie Honey" starring Eriko Sato. Fixed in my mind is the scene of the big breasted Sato running through the streets in search of food (for fuel, she is a cyborg) in her underwear. Something like that isn't easily forgotten. Of course, I am a man, and yes I am a pig. More importantly, however, than the sight of Eriko Sato bouncing around, is the fact that the film was a true live-action adaptation of anime in its purest form. Amazingly enough, the film really worked. Many a director, on both sides of the Pacific, has tried to capture the true feel of animation in a live-action film, and many have failed. Anno managed to pull it off. The point that I am trying to get to in all this is that the international success of "Cutie Honey" has no doubt opened the door for more sexy female action stars in Japanese cinema. Anime is full of these kind of characters, and now it seems it is time flesh in blood heroines to step forward, for better or worse.
