You know that I have been a huge Godzilla movie fan since I was about five years old and I have always wondered what it would be like to put on one of those rubber suits and go stomping around. Alas, I will probably never know what that feels like.....what.....no.....you have to kidding? You mean, I can!
Yes, boys and girls out there, you can indeed know what it is like to be Godzilla, because Toho is renting out his costume. I know what you are thinking, 'this must be a put on, right?'. No, a member of the Godzilla Society of North America spotted the rental on the Toho website.
Apparently for 1,000 yen (plus insurance and tax) any smuck can rent the suits from 'Godzilla SOS' or 'Final Wars' for the day from the studio. NO JOKE!
If for some reason you feel like dressing up as a mechanical version of Godzilla, then both the suites from "Godzilla X MechaGodzilla" 1993 and 2002 are also available.
At first I thought this all had to be a put-on, but no it is all legit. How f***ing cool would it be to stage your own Godzilla battle in the back yard, or cruise around the streets of Tokyo dressed as the big G himself?
I can't fathom for a second why the studio would let such valuable pieces of monster history walk out the door to have "God Knows What" happen to them? Are they that strapped for cash?
Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself - HERE (You will have to have it translated into English)

are you sure that's 1,000 plus insurance and not (as Google translates it) "plus Y1,000 Insurance"? 1,000 is only about 100 dollars isn't it?
ReplyDeleteAnd wouldn't you have to get a Toho intellectual-property license to actually use the costume?
The person who posted the item at GS North America translated it to be 1,000 yen for the rental.
ReplyDeleteI saw the same Google translation as you did, and it looks like that is the insurance price.
It is hard to tell with translating Japanese into English sometimes.
I'm only going with what I was told.
I'm sure someone will chime in with the answer.
I think the fine-print that Google picks up may also be a key: they say if you want it for SUTSUAKUTA (some untranslatable term?) you need to hire two professional actors and a production cost will be added.and a production cost will be added.
ReplyDeleteBut STILL, even if I can't actually wear a hundred kilos of latex and stop a Corgi Car collection -- and let me assure you I'd look way better in these suits than I would in Ultraman tights ;) -- still, just to have the King of Monsters greet guests at my event (before trashing the place of course) or enlisting the Mecha to accompany me as I go "settle some debts" would be worth a fair ticket price.
Nonetheless, these being limited edition things, fragile and rare, yeah, what are they thinking?
I also wonder if people really do pay Y5,500 for a real official TOHO hobby-horse too.
That is AWESOME! They could have used one for this - i thought it was a new godzilla movie coming out or something LOL -www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW4Rd5W7Lw0
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for one for years...saw one in New York in the late 80s- 91....$250 a day....a 7 ft. tall fin glowing, roar sounding
ReplyDeletespray-smoke spewing Big G.... wish I had the money to OWN one... rare
or, I'd settle for two 6 ft. inflatable G'zilla
That may be a lot of insurance and I can't find the uhh.thing to buy it..what do I do??
ReplyDeleteIt says on the bottom of the website that they prohibit exports outside of Japan, so it wont really work.
