Cleopatra 2525 is an intriguing American science fiction television series that delighted viewers during its run from January 2000 to March 2001, airing in syndication for two adventurous seasons. The show originally kicked off as part of the Back2Back Action Hour, paired with another action-packed series, Jack of All Trades. Interestingly, the initial idea from the producers was for a show titled "Amazon High," featuring a young woman, played by Monica McSwain, who travels back in time. Though this concept only made it to the pilot stage, some of the footage was creatively repurposed for a "Xena: Warrior Princess" episode called "Lifeblood." The producers later reimagined their concept, giving birth to what we know as "Cleopatra 2525."
The memorable theme song, "In the Year 2525," is performed by Gina Torres and is a modern remix of the classic hit by Zager and Evans, which was originally recorded back in 1969. The catchy tune perfectly sets the tone for the series, immersing viewers in the futuristic world that unfolds.
The storyline kicks off with the 20th-century exotic dancer Cleo, portrayed by Jennifer Sky, who unexpectedly finds herself facing complications during breast augmentation surgery. As a result, she ends up in suspended animation, only to awaken an astonishing 525 years into the future. Here, she teams up with two fierce women, Hel and Sarge, in a relentless battle against the oppressive Baileys—menacing flying machines that dominate Earth’s surface.
Hel, played by Gina Torres, is directed by an enigmatic female entity known as "Voice," who communicates orders to her through a unique communications implant nestled just below Hel's right ear. This intriguing setup allows Voice to lead multiple teams in their quest to oppose the Baileys, ultimately aiming to reclaim the Earth for humanity.
Adding to the complexity, Sarge, portrayed by Victoria Pratt, has a sister who is part of a cult that reveres the Baileys and sacrifices themselves to them willingly. It’s a fascinating twist, highlighting the diverse beliefs that emerge in this post-apocalyptic society.

As humanity has retreated underground to escape the Bailey threat, they have ingeniously constructed an intricate network of tunnels and shafts, known as the "shaft builders," to ensure their survival. Cleo, with her captivating personality and philosophical musings—many borrowed from the rich tapestry of 20th-century popular culture—becomes a beacon of inspiration for the 26th-century inhabitants.
Cleopatra 2525 blends action, adventure, and camp, making it a unique entry in the realm of science fiction television.
