Do you remember THE LAST STARFIGHTER? Well, here's a quick refresher: The 1984 sci-fi film found Alex Rogan (Lance Guest) becoming embarrassingly good at an arcade game called Starfighter. Once he becomes the highest-scoring player, Rogan is approached by the game's creator who reveals that the game is a recruiting tool for a real intergalactic conflict. There have been rumblings over the years about a potential sequel or reboot to THE LAST STARFIGHTER, and now it seems that Gary Whitta (ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY) is working on a little something with Jonathan Betuel, the writer of the original film, which could bring THE LAST STARFIGHTER back to the big-screen.

Gary Whitta revealed as much when he posted the following concept art whipped up by ROGUE ONE's Matt Allsopp on Twitter earlier today.

io9 reached out to Gary Whitta for a little more information on how he got involved and what the plan is for THE LAST STARFIGHTER. "Whenever I’ve brought up the idea of a Starfighter reboot in meetings, people would always convey excitement and then say that it’s impossible because the rights are a mess," Whitta said. "It’s true that it’s not simple, but part of the key to it is, as I understand it (and I’m not a lawyer), Jon still retains some piece of ownership of the original IP, so no one can make a new movie without his participation." Whitta said that he happened to track Betuel down, and, after pestering him with all his fanboy questions about the original film, starting talking about what a new version of the film would look like. "Since then we’ve spent so many hours working on it I’ve long since lost count, but right now we have a fully developed story that is a combination of reboot and sequel that we both think honors the legacy of the original film while passing the torch to a new generation," Whittia explained. "We’re both very excited about it creatively." So, sounds like another "legacy-quel" along the lines of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS.

Sam Jones Says New Flash Gordon Is A Sequel

It's almost exactly a year since we last heard anything about the new Flash Gordon currently developing at Fox. Speaking to 1980's Flash and recent Ted star Sam Jones, however, Den Of Geek have quietly picked up a possible scoop. They've chosen not to trumpet it, probably because it sounds, if not ridiculous, then hugely unlikely. But according to Jones himself, the Fox Flash Gordon is not a reboot or a remake, but a possible sequel.

"Matthew Reilly [VP of production at Fox Studios] acquired the screenplay rights to Flash Gordon last year," says Jones, "and he hired [producer] John Davis and his staff to write the script. They’re looking to bring out a sequel actually. I met with Matt, we’re in talks about that. A lot of people over the years, including Stephen Sommers and Neil H. Moritz, have acquired the screenplay rights, but for whatever reason they did not do a follow up on the option. So I’m very excited about it."

We're in talks? Jones declines to say exactly what that means, so it's unclear if he genuinely thinks he's in contention for another shot at the title or just up for a cameo. But, he says, "I told Matt, however he wants to use me, keep one thing in mind: whatever a younger, leading man can do, I cannot only match him, I can do more! If he does 20 pull-ups, I can do 30 pull-ups. If he can do 100 push-ups, I can do 150 push-ups. Just keep that in mind!"

Universal taps Prisoners writer for Wolfman Remake

Quite honestly, 2010’s The Wolfman remake got more right than it did wrong. A visually sumptuous and stunning callback to the gothic horrors of yesteryear, the Joe Johnson film’s set designs and lunar-lit cinematography were almost as gorgeous as Rick Baker’s Oscar winning make-up design.

Oh sure, the screenplay was a complete mess and the ending was almost as disappointing as Bencio Del Toro’s lead performance, but it got a lot closer to why Universal Pictures’ 1930s and ‘40s horror movies are still classics than Van Helsing did (or Dracula Untold for that matter…). Nevertheless, Universal is ready to start from scratch again with character who is getting the reboot treatment just in time for a planned Universal Monsters shared movie universe.

Fox Bringing 'Flash Gordon' Back To The Big Screen

It should come as no surprise in this current age of tentpole filmmaking, where studios are hoarding every pre-existing property they can get their hands on, that we’d eventually get to a point past diminished returns, where it makes no sense to repackage a film/TV show/what have you for modern audiences since the property is so obscure or dated that most audiences won’t care or even fail to recognize it. Yet here we are, at a point were there are serious plans to bring back “Flash Gordon” to the big screen.

THR reports 20th Century Fox has nabbed the rights to the original Alex Raymond-created pulpy science-fiction comic-strip series with “Star Trek 3” co-writers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay set to write the hero’s newest silver-screen adventure based off a treatment from “The Adjustment Bureau” filmmaker George Nolfi. If you’re familiar with the hero’s name, chances are you’re more familiar with the campy 1980 Dino De Laurentiis-produced and Queen-scored film that boasted a cast that included Timothy Dalton and Max von Sydow, than from ever actually reading a single frame of the strip.

Godzilla 2014 Movie: Director Said it Took a Year to Create Design for New Godzilla

A new Godzilla trailer and poster was unveiled for WonderCon in the past week, say reports.

Director Gareth Edwards appeared at the presentation Saturday to show footage from the remake of “Godzilla,” which is coming out in May.

Edwards spoke at the event, telling the Los Angeles Times about his influences.

“I grew up watching Spielberg movies,” he said, referring to director Steven Spielberg. “What they did so well — as well as having epic, fantastic spectacle — they made the characters feel real and human. We were trying to do the same thing here.”

According to the Times, the “Godzilla” clip appeared to pay homage to “Jaws” with the outline of Godzilla and an aircraft carrier.

Godzilla is also seen confronting a Mothra-type creature at an airport.

“I feel the best designs are strongest when they work in silhouette,” Edwards told the Times. “We built him in 3-D and designed him in black and rotated him. If you saw a sign warning ‘Godzilla crossing,’ you’d know right away it was not a deer or a bear.”

He said creating Godzilla–one that appears fresh and original–took about a year. “Forget the giant monsters,” he told them. “If this really happened, it would be a life-changing experience. You have to take it seriously.”

Bryan Cranston, Elizabeth Olsen, Ken Watanabe, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson will appear in the movie.

“Bryan Cranston did all the motion capture for Godzilla,” Edwards joked, according to MTV.

Edwards also talked about the secrecy surrounding the movie.

“All good ideas in the marketing of this film are all down to me. All the mistakes, the things you don’t like was the marketing team,” Edwards quipped.

The film will be in theaters on May 16.

'Prometheus' Scribe Jon Spaihts To Write 'The Black Hole' Remake For 'Oblivion' & 'Tron: Legacy' Director Joseph Kosinski

You might not remember, but quite a few years ago, director Joseph Kosinski got attached to direct a remake of Disney's 1979 film "The Black Hole." This was in the midst of him gearing up "Tron: Legacy" and there hasn't bee much news about it since, but recently at WonderCon, Kosinski said it was still on his slate. "We've been working on the story for four years now," he shared with IGN, adding, "We got a really exciting idea for it. As long as the script can kind of deliver on that -- the interest is there on the studio side. It's going to have enough creative juices to have in order to dive back in. We got some exciting ideas -- so we'll see." So yes, Disney is interested.

The studio has snapped up "Prometheus" (and "The Darkest Hour," fyi) scribe Jon Spaihts to write the movie, taking over for Jesse Wigutow, who only just a few days ago, Kosinski said in the same interview, was set to drop a first draft (Travis Beacham of "Pacific Rim" was also an early writer on the project). The most expensive movie at the time for Disney, "The Black Hole" -- which follows a group of space explorers who encounter a lost ship, outside of a black hole, with a robot crew commanded by a mad man scientist -- the picture may be beloved in some quarters, but it hasn't aged particularly well. So it's ripe for a new version and according to THR, the new take will be "philosophical and somewhat dark in tone." Well, as much as a Disney tentpole will allow -- remember, they've got toys to sell.

Max Borenstein Brought In To Write GODZILLA 3D

Legendary Pictures continues to bring in new blood to work on their highly anticipated "Godzilla 3D". Today the studio announced that they have hired Max Borenstein to write the script for the film which many speculate will be a remake of the original "Gojira" which stomped it's way into Japanese movie theaters way back in 1954. Borenstein like the film's director Gareth Edwards boasts a rather short resume. To date the young scribe has only penned two other screenplays including the upcoming supernatural thriller "The Seventh Son" (2013 release) for Warner Bros/Legendary and "Swordswallowers and Thin Men" way back in 2003 which he also directed.

Recently it had been reported that David Goyer who helped rejuvenate the Batman movie franchise with his screenplay for "The Dark Knight" was on board to do the same for Godzilla.

According to other sources associated with the production Toho is heavily monitoring many aspects of this new American Godzilla movie, presumably to ensure that the film doesn't turn out like the heavily bombasted "Godzilla 98". It has even been suggested that the studio insisted that Godzilla be played a man in a suit rather than a CG creation.

"Godzilla 3D" has been in the early development stages since March of 2010 and many aspects of the production have been kept close to the cuff by the studio.

Shawn Levy Dishes On His Untitled Frankenstein Project

Known only as Untitled Frankenstein Project, it makes a genre fan's mind race with the possibilities, both good and bad. Rather than speculate, check out what he had to say about it:

"It’s an amazing script and, yes, I am attached to direct it. That’s true, and if I can get the right pairing of two young guys I’ll make it. It’s a radical retelling of the legend, and the reason that the casting is so critical is that, though it is still very much a monster movie and a genre piece, it really focuses on the friendship and relationship and betrayals between Victor Frankenstein and Igor, who is at once his friend and assistant, all set against this discovery of a science that might change human science forever. Frankenstein moon: 'Frankenstein' author Mary Shelley claimed that the tale came to her in a vision late one night as the moon streamed through her window. Her account was disputed, but astronomers at Texas State University have now substantiated her 'Frankenstein moon.'

Many literary critics have long thought that Mary Shelley fabricated her account of how she came up with the idea for her 1818 novel "Frankenstein." But a research by a team of astronomers suggests that she was telling the truth.

In the preface to the 1831 edition of the novel, Shelley wrote that the idea first came to her in the summer of 1816, where she stayed in a manor on Lake Geneva with her future husband Percy Bysshe Shelley and the writers Lord Byron and John Polidori. Byron suggested that each of them write a ghost story. Days passed, but Shelley produced nothing but "that blank incapability of invention which is the greatest misery of authorship."

Then late one night, after a conversation about the possibility of using electricity to reanimate cadavers, the story came to her in a waking dream in which she saw a "hideous phantasm of a man" being animated by "the working of some powerful engine." When Shelley opened her eyes, she saw moonlight entering her room through the shutters, and a story was born.

The female ‘Frankenstein’ reaches its climax

Park Slope’s “feminist Frankenstein” trilogy has finally reached its climax.

Rabbit Hole Ensemble’s year-long exploration of Mary Shelley’s classic concludes this month with “The Tale of Frankenstein’s Daughter” — an interpretation the explores the feminine side of Frankenstein.

So in Stanton Wood’s play, our mad scientist is an infertile doctor who, in her desperation to have a child, creates an impassioned, yet misunderstood, man-killing monster.

“It’s much more a story about a mother and a child, about parenting, loss, rejection and isolation,” said director Edward Elefterion. “It’s less scientific, and more emotional.”

This gender-bending trilogy kicked off last fall with “The Tragic Story of Dr. Frankenstein,” which explored Shelley’s thriller from the doctor’s perspective. The trilogy switched gears this past spring with “Doctor Frankenstein’s Magical Creature,” this time told from the monster’s point of view. This third and final piece blends both plays together for a more fully realized, emotional story, running in a minimal, Kabuki theater-inspired production at Park Slope’s BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange starting Oct. 13.

“It’s much deeper, much richer, much more emotional,” said Elefterion. “It’s a whole new beast.”

Fox's FRANKENSTEIN To Be Told From Ygor's Perspective

Back in June I noted that Fox had put a new "Frankenstein" movie into high gear in hopes of beating out about a dozen other studios working on a similar project to the box office. In hopes of getting a leg up on the competition Fox hired screenwriter Max Landis to pen the story. At that time there were no details on just how the writer was going to approach such a project that had been done over and over again by so many different entities.

Now it seems that Landis has found his niche, Frankenstein as seen from Ygor's (Dr. Frankenstein's assistant .... as if you didn't know) perspective.

Landis explains," I was having an argument with my friend about when Ygor first appeared in the Frankenstein mythology. The argument got more and more intense. He was convinced that Ygor was in the Universal film. I told him that was a hunchback named Fritz. He didn't believe me and so I did some research. I read the original book. In the original book [Frankenstein is] not a doctor, he's a college dropout. The whole book is spent in fear, fleeing from a smart monster. It's exactly like the Mary Shelley's Frankenstein movie.

Then I was like, "Where's Ygor?"

So I went to the Hammer horror films. First, I watched all of the Hammer horrors, all of the Peter Cushings, all of these different Frankensteins, and there's brilliant stuff in there. Some of which, I was like, "Wait a minute. This is part of the zeitgeist Frankenstein myth. They think this is stuff from the 1930s movie."

So I was like, "Where's Ygor?"

So I watched all of the original Frankensteins, all of the Universal Frankensteins. I found Ygor. He's in the third Frankenstein film. He's a broke-neck blacksmith played by Bela Lugosi, who manipulates the monster for his own means. He's not a hunchback and he's not Frankenstein's assistant. But that can't be right! Everyone knows Frankenstein's assistant is Ygor. ... I began to pick apart our knowledge of Frankenstein and discovered that the public's idea of [the Frankenstein] myth comes from a million different places. ... I became committed to recontexturizing it all so that it all works in one story. Yeah, it's a period piece. Yes, it's from Ygor's perspective. But, man it's cool."

Now if only Fox could resurrect Bela Lugosi to play the part .... now that would be cool!

We Know EVIL DEAD 4 Is Coming ... Why? Because Bruce Says So!

Talk about news coming straight from the horses mouth!

Rumors of an "Evil Dead" remake/sequel have been around for some time but now according to Bruce Campbell the film is actually going into production.

This is what Bruce had to say via Twitter, “Believe in the remake, dawg! The project is real. In the works. Cool as hell. Scary as hell.”

At this point it is not known if Campbell will indeed reprise his role as Ash in the film or even if Sam Raimi will be involved.

Early rumors had Campbell working behind the camera with Raimi sitting in as a producer.

An "Evil Dead" without Bruce Campbell as the star ..... count me out. He owns that role dawg!

Johnny Depp To Step Into McGavin's Shoes As THE NIGHT STALKER

The news out of Hollywood today is that Johnny Depp has teamed up with Disney to secure the movie rights to the 1970s cult television series "The Night Stalker." Depp's production company Infinitum Nihil is already in place to begin pre-production work alongside the folks at Buena Vista.

Depp will be taking over the role of Carl Kolchak, which was originally played by the late Darren McGavin, a pesky newspaper reporter who had a knack for stumbling on stories involving monsters, aliens and other paranormal activity.

It has been noted that "The Night Stalker" was one of Chris Carter's major influences in developing "The X-Files".

No word on a director or cast for "The Night Stalker."

Fox Jumps Into The FRANKENSTEIN Derby By Hiring Landis

The Monster (Frankenstein to all you laymen) is certainly a very popular fellow in Hollywood these days with at least a half dozen films based on the monster in some form of production.

Not wanting to be left out of this new "Frankenstein Derby" Fox has jumped into the mix, and possibly the lead, by hiring Max Landis (Chronicle) to write their screenplay. Fox is also actively searching for a director for "Frankenstein" with the names Ron Howard, Paul Greengrass and David Yates ("Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix") being mentioned as candidates.

As we reported earlier Universal is planning their own remake of the 1931 classic "Frankenstein" with Guillermo del Toro and Scott Stube at the helm. That film however does not have a script in the works.

Other "Frankenstein" projects out there include "I, Frankenstein" at Lakeshore Entertainment, "This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship of Victor Frankenstein" at Summit Entertainment and "The Casebook of Victor Frankenstein" from Ghost House Pictures and RT Features. There are also a ton of independent "Frankenstein" flicks in the works as well including "Monster Brawl" (Frankenstein fights the Wolfman, Dracula and Zombies), "Frankenstein 2011" and "Frankenstein Rising".

It's good to be The Monster!

Bryan Singer Begins Production On 3D Remake Of JACK THE GIANT KILLER

Principal photography is underway in London on acclaimed filmmaker Bryan Singer's 3D epic action adventure "Jack the Giant Killer," with Nicholas Hoult in the title role of Jack, for New Line Cinema and Legendary Pictures.

"Jack the Giant Killer" tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Hoult and Singer recently collaborated on the Singer-produced "X-Men: First Class," for release later this year. "Jack the Giant Killer" also stars Eleanor Tomlinson as Princess Isabelle; Stanley Tucci ("Captain America: The First Avenger," "Julie & Julia") as the deceitful Lord Roderick; Ian McShane ("Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," HBO's "Deadwood") as the besieged King Brahmwell; Bill Nighy ("Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows") as the giants' leader General Fallon; and Ewan McGregor ("Star Wars," "The Ghost Writer") as palace guard Elmont.

Singer will direct from a screenplay by Darren Lemke and Christopher McQuarrie and Dan Studney, story by Darren Lemke & David Dobkin. The film will be produced by Neal Moritz, David Dobkin, Bryan Singer and Patrick McCormick.

The creative filmmaking team includes Singer's longtime collaborators, director of photography Newton Thomas Sigel ("X-Men," "Superman Returns") and editor John Ottman ("X2," "Superman Returns"). The production designer is Gavin Bocquet ("Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith").

"Jack the Giant Killer" is filming on location in and around London, and is scheduled for a summer 2012 release.

A New Line Cinema presentation, in association with Legendary Pictures, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Filming begins this week on Warner Bros. Pictures' and Village Roadshow Pictures' "Dark Shadows," which brings the cult classic television series to the big screen under the direction of Tim Burton. The film's all-star ensemble cast includes Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Eva Green, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, Bella Heathcote, Chloe Moretz, and newcomer Gulliver McGrath.

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy...until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth's ne'er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger's precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David's new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

Burton is directing and producing "Dark Shadows" from a screenplay by Seth Grahame-Smith, story by John August and Grahame-Smith, based on the television series created by Dan Curtis. Also producing are Oscar® winner Richard D. Zanuck ("Alice in Wonderland," "Driving Miss Daisy"), continuing his long association with Burton; Oscar® winner Graham King, ("Rango," "The Departed"), continuing his collaboration with Depp; Johnny Depp, Christi Dembrowski, and David Kennedy. The executive producers are Chris Lebenzon, Nigel Gostelow, Tim Headington, and Bruce Berman.

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, Oscar(R)-winning production designer Rick Heinrichs ("Sleepy Hollow"), Oscar(R)-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood ("Alice in Wonderland") and editor Chris Lebenzon ("Alice in Wonderland"). The score will be composed by Danny Elfman.

"Dark Shadows" is being filmed entirely in England, both at Pinewood Studios and on location.

"Dark Shadows" will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.

Mr. Lobo Hams It Up On The Set Of PLAN 9

I ask you, what could be scarier than a horror host with an axe?

Well ..... probably a lot of things, but America's number one horror host took full advantage of some free tine on the set of "Plan 9" to ham it up in front of the camera.

What? ...... no not Elvira? Why would you think this was about her?

No, I'm talking about Mr. Lobo from the nationally televised late-night horror movie showcase "Cinema Insomnia", who plays a major role in the remake of the Ed Wood classic (?) "Plan 9 From Outer Space".

Yes, as I mentioned last week, John Johnson of Darkstone Entertainment is knee-deep in working on the film which also stars Brian Krause, Matthew Ewald, James Rolfe, Caitlin Hill, Matt Sloan & Aaron Yonda.

As for Lobo, well he has landed the coveted role of The Amazing Criswell. Who is Criswell you may ask? Well he was a well-known psychic from the 1950s who was featured in the intro to the original "Plan 9". This time around Lobo's Criswell will do more than just introduce the film, as these photos illustrate, he will be one mean, bad-ass, zombie-killing machine.

Step aside Shaun, move to the rear Ash, Lobo's in town!

Elvira .... pfft, what does she have that Lobo doesn't? Besides those! Hmm some people prefer substance over gazongas ..... well some.

New Trailer & Images From RISE OF THE APES Lack Charm Of Original

Weta Digital has just released several concept images from "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" (I liked 'Rise of the Apes' better) via the film's official Facebook page. Though the images are pretty cool I can't help thinking that the film lacks the basic charm of the original film series. Granted, the apes .... well look like 'real' apes, it was the human-like qualities of using actors in ape make-up that allowed audiences back in the 60s and 70s to identify with with them. I wonder how much modern audiences will embrace these apes?

For me ..... I'm just not feeling it right now.

Some of these new concept photos look really cool, apes attacking soldiers in downtown San Francisco, apes scaling the Golden Gate bridge and apes with spears on top of a building. The others kinda look rather comical, apes jumping on cars like they used to do at Lion Country Safari and apes scaring shoppers at the mall.

A mixed bag in my mind.

It, of course, is way too early to pass any kind of judgement on this one. Part of me wants to like it, the other wants to ignore it and watch Taylor, Cornelius and Zira on DVD.

Three New Images From FRIGHT NIGHT

Disney has just released three brand new pics from their remake of "Fright Night" which is due out this summer. Unfortunately none of these feature every ones favorite Doctor, David Tennant as Vincent. I know that will make a few of you, and you know who you are, rather miffed.

Regardless, they do feature Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin which will make others very happy indeed.

Here's the synopsis from the Mouse Factory:

Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all going on: he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the most coveted girl in his high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend. But trouble arrives when Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—but everyone, including Charlie’s mom (Toni Collette), doesn’t notice. After observing some very strange activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on the neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.

Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) is a high school senior who’s on top of the world—that is until Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door and Charlie discovers that he is a vampire preying on the neighborhood.

The First Image Of Caesar From RISE OF THE APES

When 20th Century Fox first announced way back in 2008 that they were planning to reboot the "Planet of the Apes" movie franchise using modern computer generated effects many in the fan community spoke out in objection. How would CGI Apes stand up against the legendary makeup effects created by John Chambers for the original films?

Well today we have our first glimpse of what the main character, Caesar, in "Rise of the Apes" will look like.

Fox revealed many images from their upcoming releases at the Las Vegas’ CinemaCon including the above image, albeit only the nose and eyes, of Andy Serkis as the genetically altered ape who will bring about the fall of mankind.

The apes in "Rise" are being digitally created by Weta Studios with hair effects by Columbia University’s Eitan Grinspun, who created brand-new state of the art animation software for the Disney animated feature "Tangled".

The look of the character has some flair of Chambers work ..... but then again ..... not really.

I guess the jury will be out until we get a good look at the whole design.

Pity, I really loved the look actual actors in ape make-up.
