Ted Mikels' Grindhouse Reunion - Vegas Style!

This coming April the Las Vegas Palms Casino & Resort will be filled to overflowing with the cream of the B movie crop when legendary cult film maker Ted Mikels brings his "Grindhouse Reunion" to 'Sin City'.

The venue will serve as the perfect showcase for Mikels' latest film, "ASTRO ZOMBIES M3:Cloned" which will screen for the first time at the event.

On April 26, veteran Hollywood film-maker Ted V. Mikels will unleash his latest gang of demented mutants on a new generation of grindhouse movie fans in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Where better to have a world premiere for ASTRO ZOMBIES M3:Cloned than in one of the most glamorous locations in the world?" asked Mikels.

"The mutant clones are going totally first class this time!" The iconic horror movie-maker is best known for his 1971 film, The Corpse-Grinders. He also filmed the first zombie movie ever shot in color – the original ASTRO ZOMBIES in 1969, starring John Carradine and Wendell Corey. Mikels is also well-known for creating unusual promotional activity surrounding the release of his films, and this event will prove to be no exception.

TVM Global Entertainment has announced that the premiere is being billed as the Ted V. Mikels' Grindhouse Reunion. Mikels will treat his grindhouse fans to two pre-release director's cuts, offering them a double feature on premiere night. The world premiere of Astro Zombies M3: Cloned will open the show, followed by Mikels' 2009 film Demon Haunt.

"Not only will most of the cast and crew from AZM 3 be there in person, but we are expecting guest appearances at the theatre from many of my actors and production people from both yesteryear and this year," said Mikels. Fans can expect to catch a glimpse of AZM 3 stars Fletcher Sharp and Donna Hamblin, along with such veterans of Ted Mikels films as Francine York from Doll Squad, Tura Satana, from the original Astro Zombies, and Shanti, from Corpse Grinders 2 and Demon Haunt. "Plus the very talented artist who scores my music, as well as the fellow who built the original corpse-grinding machine, and many others," said Mikels. "It will truly be a Ted V. Mikels Grindhouse Reunion!"

The TVM Studios world premiere event is scheduled for 7 PM on Monday, April 26 at the 14 screen Brenden Theatre inside the Palms Casino & Resort. Ted V. Mikels Is Still Making More Astro-Zombies

Veteran cult movie maker Ted V. Mikels is presently working on a new Astro-Zombies movie called "Astr-Zombies M3: Cloned." The film is the third in series that started way back in 1968 with the original "Astro-Zombies" which starred John Carradine, Wendell Corey and Tura Satana.

In the original film, a unemployed scientist tries to get revenge on the space agency who fired him by creating a army of super-human monsters from the remains of murder victims.

Mikels produced a direct-to-video sequel in 2002 called, "Mark of the Astro-Zombies", the film once again starred cult movie icon Tura Satana.

The director is just beginning the process of filming the third film in the series, but as he explains he is also consolidating his studios and transferring his older titles onto digital format.

"I'm moving my sixty years of movie-making collectibles , 35mm cameras and editing equipment, fifty tons of other stuff,( 'DUMPSTERIZING" MUCH OF IT), into new archival headquarters, demanding my full time and attention for at least another six weeks, and at the same time shooting on my newest movie 'ASTRO ZOMBIES M3::CLONED'."

Mikels is also a bit disgruntled that the press and fans alike aren't paying more attention to some of the other films that he has produced over the years.

"Seems that so many folks prefer to talk about my ASTRO or CORPSE movies. What about my other 400 credits in a non-stop attack on movie-making for sixty years? Like STRIKE ME DEADLY, THE BLACK KLANSMAN, THE DOLL SQUAD, TEN VIOLENT WOMEN, MISSION:KILLFAST, HEART OF A BOY, ETC."

Indeed sixty years is a long time, and Mikels has a point, he has worked on hundreds of other films besides "Astro-Zombies."

Mikels doesn't want to give anything away about his latest project as of yet, in fact he really won't be getting into full-swing with the project until about mid August.

The only thing that I know about the film is that model and actress Sara Dunn has been cast in the film. Most of you would know her from the syndicated television series, "Cinema Insomnia" where she stars alongside horror host Mr. Lobo. This should be a huge thrill for Sarah, because she will be starring alongside her idol Tura Satana.

The busy film maker was kind enough to take a couple of minutes out of his schedule to send us two teaser posters and a scouting video for "Astro-Zombies M3: Cloned" plus the trailer for his original "Astro-Zombies":

As writer of fantasy and Sci Fi news and entertainment related articles, I receive frequent requests to lend my name to all kinds of causes and products. Admittedly most of the stuff that fills my e-mail inbox is crap. It seems everybody wants you to say something good about their cause.

Well today I actually received an e-mail about a cause that I can....honestly, put my backing into.

It seems that a group of fans has put together a website to gather support for their quest to get the nationally syndicated program, "Cinema Insomnia" back on the air in the San Francisco area. Now, I know that sounds strange. Isn't "Cinema Insomnia" produced in Sacramento? Didn't you just say that the show was syndicated around the country?

The answer to both of those questions is....yes. However, the program that is produced in Northern California, isn't on the air there. I personally have talked to the shows host, Mr. Lobo, about this enigma many times. He has always been amazed that his program has gained popularity is several regions of the country, yet it has remained somewhat unknown in his own back yard.

Well, now maybe something will be done about that.

It is only fitting that after the passing of legendary Bay area Horror Host, Bob Wilkins, that Lobo and "Cinema Insomnia" enter the very same homes that cherished Wilkin's "Creature Features.".

In fact it is even more apropos, when you consider that Mr. Lobo, himself, was mentored by the late Bob Wilkins.

Most fans already know that I consider "Cinema Insomnia" to be a hidden treasure, in the mixed-up television circus of reality shows and boring sitcoms.So, it would stand to reason that I would jump aboard this cause with both feet.

OKAY FANS! KNOW IS THE TIME TO GET "CINEMA INSOMNIA" ON THE AIR IN THE BAY AREA! HECK....LETS GET THE SHOW ON THE AIR ACROSS THE COUNTRY!

B-MOVIE CELEBRATION IN FRANKLIN: GROUND ZERO FOR B-CULTURE

The Camelot couple of B-culture is extremely proud to host THE 2008 B-MOVIE CELEBRATION. Earlier this year, The Queen organized an art show to help the hometown of the event with a flood relief benefit called THE AMAZING COLOSSAL ART SHOW and the remaining items will be sold at auction as part of the opening festivities. There are too many special guests and events to list them all. There will be a retrospective of The Films of JIM WYNORSKI like Miss Mitten’s favorite CHOPPING MALL. A special screening of CYXORK 7 with writer/director JOHN HUFF in person! They will be presenting the best film ever involving a horror host character, FRIGHT NIGHT with the director TOM HOLLAND live and in person and MR. The event will also be celebrating the 30th anniversary of the most successful indy short film HARDWARE WARS by presenting a special award to ERNIE FOSSELIUS saluting his career. The show will have about 20 workshops and seminars, including a screenwriters boot camp with RON ABERDEEN and a Horror Host panel with Q and A. "Star Wars" was of course a cultural phenomenom that changed the world of filmmaking. I remember all the action figures when I was little, and I always thought they were pretty cool. I remember those and my brother's 'Kiss' action figures vividly. The first time I saw Star Wars was on VHS. I was completely blown away with the creativity, concept and characters! I thought the effects were amazing- particularly so for 1978! I loved R2D2 and C3PO. The Star Wars bar rocked, and I make references to it often. If I have to pick my favorite characters- it would have to be the Ewoks from Return of the Jedi- ugly, cute, and whimsical all at the same time. As a "true" Star Wars fan - I'm not as fond of the new 'prequels'...."

"The summer of 1977, I was a rising senior in college. I had just signed on for a new job right after finals. I already had a job with UPS and I needed the extra bucks for the new Corvette I was going to buy that summer. That and a serious relationship with a college girlfriend were the two most important topics of the day. However, there was a rumor of an incredible movie due out at the end of May and there was a big buzz about it. Also, there was talk about a new space TV show that fall (Battlestar Galactica). I liked the thought of some space themes as opposed to a big shark eating everyone and the last thing that was "spacey" was Close Encounters but that movie seemed so goofy and distant. The idea of a space theme with the name "Wars" in the title stimulated my thoughts of what a fighter pilot of the future might be like."

"I was learning how to fly that summer as a part of my Air Force R.O.T.C. scholarship. I was due to be commissioned and go to pilot training in 1978 and was really into airplanes, spacecraft, and the likes. I built every flying model known to man as a young boy and still had aspirations of space travel as an astronaut. I had the Battle of Britain hanging from my ceiling despite my folk's concern for me destroying the structural integrity of the ceiling and the house. It is funny how your dreams as a kid can be so exciting but when the realization of them coming true becomes a possibility, new feelings emerge from your already heaving emotions."

"I was really excited about being a pilot and more excited about being a fighter pilot. The futuristic battle in space was looming just weeks ahead. I can remember that I made a special effort to be at the box office some 5 hours ahead of the first showing. My college roommate thought I was crazy when we pulled into the parking lot at about 2 P.M. We had done this numerous times to get good student tickets for college football games. In fact, we had camped out a few times overnight to get them but to go to a movie theater this early? His thought of how crazy I was quickly diminished when he saw that we were going to be somewhere in the middle of the line to see the movie. The hoopla was genuine; the people we were talking with in line were extremely excited."

"Actually, my first brush with Star Wars is my first memory EVER. I was born in 1976. When I was a kid, my parents would take my brothers and I to the local drive-in almost every weekend. I don’t know if it was the summer of ’77 or a repeat showing in ’78 but my dad took my mom, older brother and I to see Star Wars at the drive-in. He’d already seen it a couple times so it was no big deal that he would miss part of the movie to go get some treats from concessions for my mom. I wanted to go with so he took me. I was a child when STAR WARS came out but I remember my parents taking me to the film and being mesmerized by the whole experience.

I remember loving the whole fairy tale aspect of the movie at the time- the princess being rescued etc.

But as I grew older, I learned to appreciate the multi layered movie that Lucas createdit is astounding!it was the first time, I became aware of the difference of good and evil in a movie.

Seventeen at the time of its release, I was certain that Star Wars had come custom made for this sci-fi geek who had grown up on a steady diet of 50s and 60s sci-fi films and TV shows. But Star Wars' impact - great as it was - came not so much from the first screening but a week prior its release in the form of a small B/W photo run in the Arts and Leisure section of the Sunday New York Times. A somewhat blurry dot matrix picture, it showed two Storm Troopers with weapons extended. Nothing more. "Holy crap!" I thought as the design of both the outfits and the laser rifles announced that some cool cinematic times were brewing in the genre I loved most.

Being thirty years ago and seeing as I saw the film no less than ten times in the theater (topped only by EMPIRE, which I saw sixteen times in the theater) it is hard to weed out the memory of the very first screening. However, one memory that does stand out is a visit to the house of a girlfriend shortly after seeing STAR WARS for the first time. Gathered upon her dresser was the entire set of just-released Kenner Star Wars figures. My first time to see such a thing, I asked what "that" was all about. "I'm not sure," she replied, "but I like the way they look." And now thirty years later, it seems that so did the rest of us.

Mr Lobo To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award At The B Movie Celebration

Haven't you just been waiting for an excuse to go to Franklin, Indiana and watch some truly awesome movies? Of course you have. Actually, it turns out there's a great reason to go to this college town south of Indianapolis in August. It's the Second Annual B-movie celebration, with films so bad they belong in the so-bad-they're good category, like The Terror of Tiny Town and Plan Nine from Outer Space.

When, Who and What

September 26thth thru 28th, The Indy Film Co-op will be hosting The B Movie Celebration. During the Celebration they will screen Fifty B Classics, have a tribute to Roger Corman Protege Jim Wynorski, featuring a retrospective of the films of this prolific B Director. Stuart Grodon, Director of Re-Animator will be receing a Lifetime Achievement Award The Indy Film Co-op, the hosts of the festival, will also screen ten soon to be classic B films from current B filmmakers.

Lots Going On

There will be over 20 educational seminars a. The Celebration will start with a bang with a B Movie Gala to be held at The Johnson County Museum of History.In attendance will be B movie legends like Will The Thrill Viharo, Special Effects Wizard Tom Savini, Cult Director Jim Wynorski, and Host of Cinema Insomnia Mr. Lobo. The Always Lovely Queen of Trash, Atuart Gordon will receive a lifetime achievement award. Also appearing will be original Plan Nine from Outer Space cast member Conrad Brooks. The Master of Ceremonies for the entire event will be Brownsburg’s own Steve “Papaw” Pyatte.This years Celebration will also feature a live concer/beach party with the world's greatest horror/surf band The Moon-RaysB movie Fans…Indiana wants you!

Stuart Gordon

About Stuart Gordon -He joined with Charles Band and his Empire Pictures to make the company's first big hit, Re-Animator (1985), a modern-day version of the H.P. Lovecraft story with Jeffrey Combs in the lead role. Gordon stayed with Empire and helmed another Lovecraft film, From Beyond (1986), and tackled the murderous Dolls (1987) the same year. He directed Robot Jox (1990), but it was a disappointment and Empire Pictures folded after the release of that film. Gordon found work writing the script and creating the story for Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), a major hit of 1991. He then returned with Band and his new company Full Moon Pictures for the remake and more graphic version of The Pit and the Pendulum (1991) (V) the same year. Other works of his include Fortress (1993), a major hit of 1994, and the screenplay for The Dentist (1996).In 2001, Gordon returned to the H.P Lovecraft territory with Dagon (2001), and in 2003 directed King of the Ants (2003/I), a comic thriller about a painter-turned-hit man, and the David Mamet Edmond (2005).

About Jim Wynorski - A 25 year veteran in the Hollywood exploitation field, writer/producer/Director JIM WYNORSKI is responsible for over 150 varied motion pictures in a myriad of Genres. Wynorski trained at the feet of renowned B movie mogul Roger Corman Throughout the 1980s came a steady stream of Classic B titles like BIG BAD MAMA 2 with Angie Dickenson, NOT OF THIS EARTH with Traci Lords and RETURN OF SWAMP THING with Heather Locklear. On into the '90s, Wynorski continued to climb to the top of the B-Film mountain with flicks like HARD BOUNTY starring Kelly LeBrock, BODY CHEMISTRY 3 & 4 with Shannon Tweed and Morgan Fairchild and MUNCHIE.
