Giant Mega Monster Movies This Weekend! Mr. Lobo presents Godzilla and Mothra!
The posters and fliers were eaten up at Monster Bash. Mr. Lobo looks forward to seeing many of you there! Make a weekend out of it if you can…there is a great Hotel in the same parking lot and wonderful restaurants–And of course, The Alamo serves great food and spirits in the theater. Every row of seats has it’s own table. When was the last time you had someone bring you beer and pizza in the dark? It’s damn spiffy! It reminds Mr. Lobo of the “Thrillville” shows we used to do back in California!
To wet your appetite even further we asked Bob Johnson, who runs Bay Area Film Events and the Sci-Fi Japan website, to say a few things about our Saturday program. Bob has been bringing Kaiju/Tokusatsu to the bay area over the last 30 years with events like GODZILLAFEST and ULTRAMANIA–which Mr. Lobo had the honor of co-hosting on the West Coast.

ZOM-BEE TV is a new FREE horror channel for CONNECTED TELEVISION that is currently on the affordable ROKU STREAMING PLAYER but will soon be infecting SMART TVs, GAME SYSTEMS, and SMART PHONES…
Even though the creator and host of Cinema Insomnia is still viewable on AMGTV affiliates on terrestrial TV…During the 12 years on the air the number of American who even have a standard TV in their home has dropped in half and Cable and Satellite are steadily declining. DVD sales have dropped off. For Mr. Lobo the writing seems to be on the wall…and Internet Based Streaming Television seems be a likely video successor.
“It reminds me of when UHF was new”– “It allows for all kinds of funky and creative home-grown programing and commercials.” said the extremely prolific horror host Mr. Lobo who seemed energized on set where he recorded footage for 2 and a half new episodes of his 2 hour program and around 40 or more spots for the channel and it’s new sponsors to be inserted in all the channels programs. The spots are 10-60 seconds long and will have MR. LOBO fans howling during the breaks.
“We are working with sponsors that will fit in with the lifestyles of our viewers and ones who will allow us to have fun with their products with a little “tongue in cheek” humor. These sponsors on this first wave of ads get the material and they respect the audience. Fans “get” that Mr. Lobo is a “TV guy” and sponsors make the shows possible and keep the channel free…Mr. Lobo hopes they like our sponsors products and buy them–because I really enjoyed making these commercials.” Don’t worry–Mr. Lobo will still be wrapping around the low-rent royalty free horror stuff on CINEMA INSOMNIA, but he is very excited to be presenting some newer licenced indie films–like the 2006 dark comedy CYXZORK 7 , a horror monster musical called A HARD DAYS NIGHTMARE, and VERY MISUNDERSTOOD 2013 film MIDGET ZOMBIE TAKEOVER. “Mr. Lobo is very interested in discovering overlooked films new and old.” Producer and channel visionary Dale Jackson of ZOM-BEE will be at the NATIONAL HAUNTERS CONVENTION with Mr. Lobo where they will be shooting more content for the channel. If you have a product that you would like to promote to ZOM-BEE’s 50,000 or so subscribers and would like to have Mr. Lobo as your writer and spokesperson email Dale Jackson at ZOM-BEE TV dale@zom-bee.com There is a new interface for ROKU this month–ZOM-BEE TV‘s new look and new content will be rolling out over the next few weeks also.
Maybe, Mr. Lobo can start hocking Waterbeds, Kitchen Gadgets, Chia Pets and Silm Whitman Records–UHF LIVES AGAIN!
Cinema Insomnia - Did You Know?
Cinema Insomnia is a nationally syndicated American television series presented by horror host Mr. Lobo.
Typically, Mr. Lobo opens each episode by promising to screen a well-known horror or science fiction classic (such as The Creature from the Black Lagoon or Alien); however budgetary limitations, acts of God or other circumstances invariably force him to show a much lower quality movie (such as Starcrash or Santa Claus Conquers The Martians).
Unlike the various hosts and robots of Mystery Science Theater 3000, Mr. Lobo does not appear while the movie is playing; instead he appears in brief vignettes in between segments of the movie. Also appearing are items such as fake commercials (such as one for "Rad Abrams – Skateboard Attorney"), old movie trailers, classic commercials and footage and interviews shot at horror conventions, science fiction conventions, and film festivals across the country.
Mr. Lobo's rocking chair was previously used by none other than Bob Wilkins at last live appearance at Harlow's in Sacramento. Bob Wilkins was credited as the senior consultant for Cinema Insomnia when the series went into syndication.
Miss Mittens - Mr Lobo's ever-vigilant houseplant companion - was a gift from Sacramento News10's chief meteorologist Elissa Lynn.
The black void in which Mr. Lobo inhabits on the program is actually a hand-crafted velvet drape, made by two hundred Malaysian children.
The episode with the largest "footprint" or viewing radius was the 2006 Halloween Special, "Frankenstein vs. the Creature from Blood Cove. It was available to 45 Million households across the US.
Mr. Lobo's career had many twists and turns before his fame as a Horror Host, including, publishing comic books and trading cards, illustrating children's books, writing comedy, and producing radio plays. Also Mr. Lobo is his real name.
November Fire, the apparel company that sponsored "The Last Man on Earth" episode, was founded by one of the original artists for "Garbage Pail Kids" and "Wacky Packages". The founder of November Fire, Strephon Taylor, also appears on Cinema Insomnia, as "Slob Zombie".

Mr. Lobo Wants To Return CINEMA INSOMNIA To It's TV Roots
Written By: Ken HulseyLocal Horror Host, Eric Lobo aka "Mr. Lobo" started Cinema Insomnia on KXTV Channel 10 in Sacramento in 2001 only to have it cancelled later that year. Since then, that 3:05 AM time slot on very late Saturday/early Sundays have been replaced by a hostless movie slot consisting of the same 13 public domain movies. Since this is the 10th Anniversary of Mr. Lobo's debut on KXTV, this petition is encouraging KXTV to bring back Cinema Insomnia & Mr. Lobo to the same time slot. They have nothing to lose but plenty to gain.
"The Show Will Go On!" CINEMA INSOMNIA'S 10th Season Fully Funded!
Written By: Ken HulseySource: Mr. Lobo
When the host of the nationally syndicated late-night horror showcase "Cinema Insomnia" decided to make the 10th season something special he knew that he would have to get a little help to raise the funds necessary to make his vision become a reality. As most of you already know, independent productions sometimes don't rake in the kind of cash that say.....oh I don't know..... films like "Avatar" do, so finding the resources to get things rolling can be a bit tight.
Lobo decided to put his pride on the shelf for a bit and go directly to his fans, via Kickstarter, to ask for their donations to get the $10,000 he would need to produce his shows 10th season. It was a big risk for the Sacramento, Ca based production. A big risk that payed off in a big way.
In late November the campaign to launch the 10th season of CI went into full effect, and early on things didn't look good. Money began to trickle in slowly and about half-way through the 30 days allotted to raise the needed funds only about $3,000 had been pledged. The early returns weighed very heavily on Lobo who knew that his fan base was very loyal, but people had families to feed and Christmas was just around the corner. Perhaps the horror host had chosen the wrong time to petition for funds?
Despite these early setbacks, the CI fans ultimately didn't let Lobo down and as the time ticked off on the last evening of the Kickstarter program the money came in ...... and how. A late surge in donations pushed the tally past the projected $10,000 mark to an amazing $11,140!
Mr. Lobo was moved to say the least.
In response to the overwhelming response to all of the generosity bestowed by his loyal fans, Mr. Lobo had this to say:
"Mr. Lobo is the luckiest boy in the whole world! The CASH-O-METER exploded at $10,000—sending springs and sparks showering everywhere! We are still getting donations and we have two hours to go. Sources say we’re creeping up on $11,000!
You did it CINSOMNIACS, INSOMNIACS, SLEEPLESS NIGHTS, FAIR WEATHER FANS, FRIENDS, LOVED ONES, FELLOW HORROR HOSTS, ART-LOVERS, MONSTER KIDS, FILM GEEKS and COLLEAGUES…
YOU DID IT!
Together, we made indie television history and saved the world for misunderstood movies!"
He then went on to personally thank every single person who donated their hard-earned money to back the show. You can read all of those "thank yous" here - http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cinemainsomnia/cinema-insomnia-10-year-anniversary/posts
This just goes to prove that even in country such as ours, though times may be tough all around, people still will find ways to keep something that brings them joy alive. Mr. Lobo and CI are proof that the American dream is still very much alive and that quality entertainment can be produced without the backing of mega studios and huge corporations.
Indeed Lobo is the "luckiest boy in the whole world", his fans have stood by him for ten years, far longer than the attention span of the average TV viewer. About 99% of the television series that have been launched during CI's run have come and gone, which is a true testament to just what Lobo has been able to produce with a small crew and independent actors.
Bigger is not always better and CI proves it.

Mr Lobo Goes IN SEARCH OF ANCIENT ASTRONAUTS - Celebrating 10 Years Of Cinema Insomnia
Written By: Ken Hulsey
In honor of Cinema Insomnia's pending 10 year anniversary, I thought it would be cool to post this classic clip from the episode "In Search of Ancient Astronauts".
The show, as you have probably already rationalized, centers around the famed 1973 NBC documentary "In Search of Ancient Astronauts" which was hosted by "Twilight Zone" creator Rod Serling. The movie is kind of a poor man's version of the major motion picture "Chariots of the Gods" which is based on the novel by Swiss researcher Erich von Däniken who believes that mankind's origins may have come from outer space and that there is plenty of archaeological evidence in existence to prove it.
The film would also serve as the pilot episode for Serling's famed television series "In Search Of", which also dealt with subjects from the realm of the unexplained like UFOs, Bigfoot, Easter Island and spontaneous human combustion.
In this classic episode of "Cinema Insomnia" every ones favorite horror movie host, Mr. Lobo, sets out to find the truth about all of this alien visitation mumbo-jumbo by traveling across the globe to many of the locations featured in the film including the infamous "Area 51". Much to Lobo's surprise, finding the exact location of one our countries most top-secret instillation's isn't as difficult as one would expect, thanks in part to the 'Freedom of Information Act.' All anyone needs to do is simply call information (411) and ask for the number.
Simple right?
Well, as Lobo soon discovers, he has been given the number of "Area 51 Auto Salvage" not the "Area 51" where all the UFOs are kept.
Best line: "You'll never get Blue Book for a fixer-upper Yugo (UFO) no matter how many parts you buy from us."
In his quest for the truth Mr. Lobo also manages to get abducted by actual aliens, who intern do some rather intrusive testing on him, for which he earns $20 for his services.
In the end (no pun intended there) Lobo, like Fox Mulder before him, finds the truth on the subject of aliens and UFOs just outside his reach. It seems that there are just some things man was never meant to know.
Here is a quick update on Mr. Lobo's progress on raising $10,000 to produce a brand-new 26 episode 10 the anniversary season of "Cinema Insomnia". As of today, the fund-raising effort through Kickstarter has raised $3,086.
This is what the world famous horror host had to say in gratitude to everyone who has donated so far:
"Mr. Lobo is very thankful for the wonderful people who have pledged toward making the CINEMA ISOMNIA 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY the best season yet! That’s right, 44 total both on the grid and in the real world gave some of their hard earned cash for the cause of late night slumber party silliness.
There are certainly a lot of worthy causes asking for donations this Holiday season—but I hope you know how important some silliness on a Saturday night can be. Horror Hosts are not cancer scientists or missionaries or doctors but if you could read some of the letters I have received over the years…
CINEMA INSOMNIA has been a comfort people who can’t sleep because of illness or mothers up late with their babies, It has helped estranged fathers and sons come together, it was a sign of normalcy to families just getting regular TV signals again after a regional disaster, it has been the date night or family night for the very poor, a companion for the alienated and clinically depressed, the show has thwarted suicides and has brightened the life of severely disabled, and been a source of entertainment for so many more.
CINEMA INSOMNIA has giving me personally so very much. It has been a wonderful creative outlet and the process is very therapeutic. It’s how I get back what the real world beats out of me and I have had so many adventures and have got to know so many fantastic human specimens. As a look over my bounty I am very grateful to have such generous and supportive people in my life. Here are some folks I am particularly thankful for right now…I hope I won't let you down..."

Mr. Lobo Is Set To Begin Production On The Tenth Season Of CINEMA INSOMNIA
MR. LOBO Is Set To Begin Filming The Historic 1oth Season Of CINEMA INSOMNIA ...... With A Little Help From His Freinds And Fans.Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Mr. Lobo
As most of you already know, I am a HUGE fan of the nationally syndicated late-night movie program "Cinema Insomnia" which stars local Sacramento icon, Mr. Lobo and a incredible cast of misfits and monsters, including the shows co-host, the lovely house-plant (yes, I said 'house-plant') Miss Mittens.
I actually stumbled upon the program back in 2003, when I purchased a DVD copy of the CI episode, "Gigantis the Fire Monster" (aka 'Godzilla Raids Again) on eBay. At the time, there was no formal DVD release for the often misunderstood "Gojira" sequel, so I took a chance on it.
Upon viewing the episode I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. The show was a great tribute to the late-night horror movie showcases of the 1970s and early 80s. You know, back in the day when guys used to dress up like "Dracula" and make corny jokes about the movies.
Yes, people used to do that sort of thing before we all got formally introduced to Cassandra Peterson's (Elvira) cleavage.
Many of you may be too young to remember these shows, but for many of us, it was the only way to view the classics like "Frankenstein", 'Godzilla" and "The Creature From The Black Lagoon" during the 'dark ages' before Cable TV, VHS, DVD, and The Internet.
Lobo, had the whole thing down to a science, funny gags based on the movies, weird guest stars, and an occasional bit of 'T & A', just for good measure.
Any way, to make a long story short, I contacted Mr. Lobo to tell him how much I loved his program, and he was surprised to learn that someone was actually 'willing' to pay for a copy of one of his shows ...... and actually enjoyed it. Needless to say, we have been good friends ever since and I have become a life-long fan of "Cinema Insomnia".
That brings me to the subject at hand. Mr. Lobo is set to begin work on the historic 10th season of CI, but as all good independent TV show producers are these days, he is in need of some financial backing to get the whole thing off the ground.
Here is the press release:
Mr. Lobo is an independent producer and host of a TV show called CINEMA INSOMNIA that will soon be celebrating its 10th anniversary. Mentored by Creature Features host Bob Wilkins and given nods from Elvira and other late night horror hosts—Mr. Lobo’s show a throwback to late night movie programs of yesteryear as well as a platform for indie films, genre classics, shorts, gems from their archives, satire, absurdist humor, interviews, and looks at the off beat side of entertainment. This special blend of weirdness has been seen on 100’s of channels coast to coast.
“It’s not been easy. Most of what you see on commercial TV is a product and it’s corporately controlled.” Says Lobo in a video proposal uploaded to KICKSTARTER, a website used by indie filmmakers, musicians, and artists to fund their creative projects.
“You hear a lot of hullabaloo about independently produced movies—but not so much television. Cinema Insomnia is a labor of love…”
In recent seasons, however, financial setbacks have made it difficult to add very many new episodes into the syndication line up. Stations are happy to repeat the 30 or 40 shows in their cue. Halloween Specials and other new shows are purely a service to the fans.
For the 10th anniversary Mr. Lobo plans to pull out all the stops and do Cinema Insomnia’s first full season in several years. Like in their hey-day back in 2003-2004 they want to produce 26 brand new full episodes for the 2011-2012 season. This is expected to electrify the fans! The Kickstarter funds promise to help them meet this goal.
The episodes will be seen on AMGTV stations (http://www.amgtv.tv/) as well as other broadcast TV stations across the country, on demand via Amazon, Mevio, Livestream and Roku, and released on DVD by Apprehensive Films(thegrindhouse.net).
On the CINEMA INSOMNMIA 10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY Kickstarter page backers may get exciting rewards. A link on cinemainsomnia.com and a 10th Anniversary button at the $5 level, $25 also gets you a certificate of appreciation and an 8X10 signed by Mr. Lobo! If you happen to donate the full ten grand goal you can co-host an entire show! There are lots of levels in between so check out all the rewards at: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cinemainsomnia/cinema-insomnia-10-year-anniversary.
Trust me, this will be money well spent people! "Cinema Insomnia" is one of the best programs on television today and we all need to do our part to ensure that the 10th season of this landmark series gets made.
How else will we all get enjoy quality films like, "Creature", "Star Crash" and "Monster From A Prehistoric Planet"?
I ask you, how?
Just think of the children and how much joy a 10th season of CI will bring to them? Just think of the children.
Give a gift that will keep on giving for generations ...... what? ....... too much? okay, I'll stop.
Just give what you can.

If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then someone over at Warner Bros Animation may very well be a huge fan of Cinema Insomnia and it's host Mr. Lobo.
Well, at least it appears that way.
In the very first episode of "Scooby-Doo! (Mystery Incorporated)",entitled "Beware The Beast from Below", which aired on Cartoon Network in early July, Fred, Daphne, Shaggy, Velma and Scooby crossed paths with a character named Professor Emmanuel Raffalo, which as you can see from the photo, bears an uncanny resemblance to the nationally syndicated horror host.
So here is the million-dollar-question, "Is Professor Emmanuel Raffalo actually Mr. Lobo in cartoon form?"
Unofficially the answer is yes, according to a source at Cartoon Network, who contacted Mr. Lobo's distributor to inform him of the homage.
Officially, well, Warner Bros hasn't fessed up to the origin of Raffalo's thick-rimed glasses, and signature facial hair as of yet. In fact, every time "Cinema Insomnia" fans try to add the information about the character's origin to Wikipedia, it gets removed.
So, for now at least, Mr. Lobo isn't going to be credited as the inspiration for this new "Scooby Doo" villain, but with continued pressure from his fans, hopefully, that may change.
This isn't the first time that a horror host has been the inspiration for a cartoon or comic book character you know. Bay Area horror host and local icon Bob Wilkins was used as the basis for a character in the "Batman" comic "Gotham After Midnight" , which was confirmed by artist Kelly Jones, but, alas, not by DC Comics.
Here is a synopsis of the episode "Beware The Beast from Below" from "Scooby-Doo! (Mystery Incorporated)":
"After being jailed for solving another mystery, the Mystery Inc. gang stumbles upon yet another mystery: A slime mutant that lives underneath the town is cocooning anyone who gets in its way. They follow the monster to the Crystal Cove caves where they find a magnifying glass-shaped locket and cocooned bodies of construction workers. Despite being warned not to continue investigating by their parents and authority figures, they steal one of the bodies and bring it to Professor Emmanuel Raffalo for studying. Meanwhile, Velma is trying to get Shaggy to be more intimate in their relationship while Shaggy is not yet ready to tell Scooby. Daphne keeps hinting her romantic feelings towards Fred who is oblivious to almost everything apart from solving mysteries and building traps. After the disappearance of Professor Raffalo, the gang discovers that cocooned material are made from the same material as Fruitmeir's Dessert, a new dessert bar that opened two months ago. Shaggy and Scooby infiltrate Fruitmeir's by posing as female servers, and Daphne stumbles across a hole that leads to the caves which go right under under the bank. Although not as planed, they catch the monster, and it is revealed to be Professor Raffalo, who discovered the caves while collecting mold spores and found out it led to the bank, so he posed as the Slime Mutant using Fruitmeir's Dessert and staged his own disappearance to lower any suspicion. When Daphne shows him the locket she found in the caves, Mayor Jones seems suspicious, but Raffalo claims to know nothing about the locket."
And here is a photo of Mr. Lobo (and his lunch):

Hey, who was your horror host? If you're tempted to respond, "Whaddaya mean, my horror host?", you probably grew up in the post-local television era. Which means you spent your childhood without a mordantly sardonic costumed creep to introduce (and heckle) your Z-grade shock/shlock fare when you were staying up way too late. Horror hosts are one of the folkways of TV, beginning in the 1950s when broadcast was both local and live, with the indelible Vampira. Each station spawned its own variations on the theme, from the classic "cool ghoul" Zacherley in ..New York.., to ..Chicago..'s undead hippie, Svengoolie, to ....Cleveland....'s beatnik-styled Ghoulardi (director P. T. Anderson's father!) It just gets weirder from there, in the documentary American Scary, which digs deep to discover that before Mystery Science Theater 3000, there was a whole world of campy characters for every kid -- and stoned sophomore -- to call their own. And we've got our own host, Mr. Lobo, to share even more great goodies and treats that they couldn't pack into the film.....and then, continuing the fine tradition, we'll all watch a rare surprise TV-movie feature from the 70s!

It's A Two Night Cinema Insomnia Loboween Spectacular!
Written By: Ken HulseySources: Mr. Lobo / Olav Phillips
Ah, Mr. Lobo promised that he would have information about his upcoming Halloween special, make that, Loboween special, for us.......... and here it is!
Indeed this spooky holiday season just wouldn't be the same without the horror host icon, Mr. Lobo, and his nationally syndicated series. "Cinema Insomnia". The show has, over the past decade, become as much a Halloween staple as pumpkins, candy corn, "It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown" and Elvira's boobs.
This year Lobo has pulled out all the stops, producing a two night "Cinema Insomnia" holiday event, featuring the national debut of Eric Miller's film, "Mark of the Damned", in which the host with the most makes a special cameo.
On the second night of this unique event, Mr. Lobo and the entire cast, will take a heart felt break from their usual comedic fair to pay a special tribute to one of the shows biggest fans, known simply as Katie, who passed away earlier this year.
I could sit here all night typing away about this truly amazing "Cinema Insomnia" Halloween special, but that's what press releases are for. Here are the damned details:
Cinema Insomnia is launching its new season with the premiere of the new indie film Mark Of The Damned by Eric Miller in a special two part Lobotacular!
The LOBONEWS NETWORK is pleased to announce the premiere of Cinema Insomnia's latest season with the debut of Eric Miller's Mark of the Damned featuring a cameo by none other then your National Horror Host, Mr. Lobo. This exciting Lobotacular will broadcast coast to coast on our syndication partner AMGtv as well as globally live on the Internet at CinemaInsomnia.com for overseas Cinsomniacs.
Mark of the Damned, Part One will be broadcast at 9pm PST - October 24th nationwide on the AMGtv Network and will be available to over 100 stations coast to coast as well as on Satellite (Galaxy 19, 3991 H). Mark of the Damned, Part Two will premiere Halloween night at the usual time slot of 9pm PST.
Part One features an exclusive look at the production of Mark of the Damned with interviews of the cast and crew as well as an inside look at some of the many strange and bizarre locations used in the movie and the local Virginia horror scene. This is truly a first in Cinema Insomnia history and will be a must watch for any Cinema Insomnia or Horror fan. Mark of the Damned Part One also boasts a rare appearance by November Fire recordings novelty rocker, "Slob" who stars as a rival horror host named "Slob Zombie." Shot almost entirely on location, this is a truly Lobtastic episode...
Part Two is a journey back to classic Cinema Insomnia and is dedicated to a very special Cinema Insomnia fan named Katie. Mr. Lobo is back in the Void to present a special musical tribute to a brave Mr. Lobo fan who passed away this year. Her story and her journey touched the entire Cinema Insomnia cast and crew, and this episode is dedicated to her. Mr. Lobo also takes the night back with an homage to Creature Features and Horror Host legend, Bob Wilkins. Be sure to tune in for a very special episode with a VERY special surprise guest at the end of the episode. Many questions will be answered, but many more questions will be left unanswered, or will they? Tune in and find out...

Virginia Creepers: The Horror Host Tradition Of The Old Dominion - Following Virginia’s Rich Horror Hosting History
Source: Sean Kotz (Press Release)After 18 months of production, Horse Archer Productions will release its much anticipated documentary, “Virginia Creepers: The Horror Host Tradition of the Old Dominion,” with a debut at Monster Fest 6 in Chesapeake, VA on October 10.
The film, which looks at more than 50 years of hosting horror movies on the Virginia and DC airwaves features extensive interviews with all known living hosts, previously unheard audio and video footage from shows not seen by the public for nearly four decades.
Horror hosting, as it is commonly known, was a very popular form of local entertainment in many markets for decades and survives to this day, largely on cable access television and the internet.
“We have put a lot of research and leg work into this film,” said Sean Kotz, co-producer and co-director of the full length feature documentary, “but we have also been fortunate to find passionate people with photos, audio and video that would have otherwise been lost.”
Kotz said the idea for the film evolved in 2007 after he moderated a panel of Virginia’s hosts including Count Gore De Vol, The Bowman Body, Dr. Madblood, and Dr. Sarcofiguy at MonsterFest that year, an annual event at the Chesapeake Central Library.
“There were a lot of funny stories swapped at that table and it got a tremendous response,” said Kotz, “and I started thinking about the fact that we had a great little tradition in this state with some legendary names that are known nationally.”
The documentary runs chronologically, starting with “Jonathan,” whose show appeared on WSLS in Roanoke on February 6, 1958.
Soon after two female hosts, Ghoulda and Hazel Witch hit the Richmond airwaves while Ronald began his show on Friday the 13th in 1959, running off and on for nearly a decade.
From there, the film takes it the subject right up to the present day and talks with hosts who are still producing their shows in various forms.
Additionally, the film is hosted itself by Mr. Lobo, a California host whose show, Cinema Insomnia, has been syndicated in Virginia with a great deal of praise and success.
As a result, the producers have already seen pre-orders come in from across the country, which they say is an indicator of how important these shows were to people in general.
“This documentary is also very much about the transformation of television,” said co-director/producer, Chris Valluzzo. “Originally, local talent was very important for a variety of programs but gradually infomercials, syndication and corporate ownership pushed most of that out.”
Noting that both Bowman Body and Dr. Gruesome’s Movie Morgue were beating Carson in Richmond on Friday nights through two decades, Valluzzo said it is not surprising that so many people care about this topic.
“It is more about comedy and localism than it is about being scared,” he said.
Rob Floyd, co-founder of Monster Fest, says the October 10 premiere of Virginia Creepers is an exciting event for everyone involved.
“The fact that a past Monster Fest was the inspiration for Virginia Creepers makes me very proud,” said Floyd.
“Horror hosts are just as much fun today as they were when we were kids and remind us that someone else out there ‘gets it’ like we do.”
Sean Kotz adds, "One of the things that makes this documentary special is amount of recovered audio, stills and video and the fact that we discovered three shows that there was no previous public record for. In other words, we were able to add to the recorded history of the subject AND we found and restored audio going back as far as 1958 and video as far back as 1973 (at least).
We've also tried to do a little more than just document the individual shows, but also, show how TV and media has changed, why the format more or less died out because of corporate ownership and the rebirth of the form which happened with Virginia's own, Count Gore De Vol."
The documentary, which also features original songs by Virginia musicians, is available at http://www.virginiacreepersmovie.com/ and and is likely to appear at future conventions and film festivals.
People can also search for “Virginia Creepers” on YouTube to see a mini-documentary, a music video trailer and a few clips from the film.
