I bet you didn't know that scorpions lived under the sea?
Well, they do, but not the kind that we see running around on land, and crawling into peoples shoes. Granted, there is such a thing as a "sea scorpion", but it is a different breed of critter all together from what we see rising from the depths in Brian Yuzna's monster film, "Amphibious 3D".
Now, this one has been around for quite some time, in fact the last time we had news to report about the film was way back in October of last year.
As you may remember, "Amphibious 3D" was spawned right after "Cloverfield" hit theaters, along with dozens of other giant monster films. Almost all of those other films have already been released. Brian Yuzna hasn't rushed the production of his movie, which probably means that he is actually trying to produce a 'good' film, and not your standard, 'direct to Sci Fi Channel' fodder that we have seen way too much of lately.
Of course, the 3D gimmick is being run into the ground these days. It's almost like reliving the 1950s all over again, with tons of new monster films, designed to 'pop' out at ya, and hopefully, create a fright or two in the process.
It's hard too believe that movie makers would revert back to an 'old-school' cinematic trick to compete with video games and HD televisions. Maybe they will start parking ambulances out in front of movie theaters that show horror movies or plant people to scream at the right moment, or faint, or panic and run out of the theater. Then again, maybe not.
Yuzna has a pretty decent resume, including "Society" (1989), "Bride of Re-Animator" (1990), "Return of the Living Dead III" (1993), "Beyond Re-Animator" (2003), so this one may be better than average giant monster fair.
To be honest, when I first heard about the project, I dismissed the film as just that. However, after viewing the first batch of stills from "Amphibious 3D", I feel that I may have been too quick to pass judgement. The shots look pretty good, at least better than what we have seen from "The Asylum" and the like.
You just gotta get past the whole scorpion from the sea business.
Here's the plot for "Amphibious 3D":
Marine biologist, Skylar Shane [Janna Fassaert], hires an expat charter boat captain, Jack Bowman [Michael Paré], to help her find prehistoric life form samples in the north Sumatran Sea. During the expedition, they run into some of Jack’s ‘friends’, a gang of smugglers headquartered on a fishing platform in the middle of the sea. Tamal, an orphan sold into servitude on the fishing platform by his uncle, a ‘Dukun’ [sorcerer and master of black magic] shaman, begs Skylar to take him away. She empathizes with the boy, who reminds her of her lost daughter, Rebecca, and is determined to help him, not knowing what lurks beneath the dark inky water, waiting to surface. Once Tamal arrives on the scene, mysterious things begin to happen, until one by one the smugglers are killed by a terrifying creature from the deep. In the middle of an eerie, violent storm, the animus inside Tamal grows stronger, calling for the ancient creature of his nightmares. Now Skylar and Jack must battle the terror – once locked deep in the abyss by an old civilization, as it is now about to resurface…
The film is in it's post production phase, which includes getting the Real D / Dolby 3D effects just right. Presently Celcius Entertainment is aiming for a May 2010 release.
