Cover pencils by the legendary Jack Kirby, with inks expertly handled by Sol Brodsky, sets the stage for an exciting tale in "We Have to Fight the X-Men!" The script, crafted by the iconic Stan Lee, follows the brilliant pencils of Kirby and the ink work of Chic Stone.
The story begins with The Thing, who is in the middle of moving a captivating sculpture created by Alicia Masters. Interestingly, this piece of art astonishingly portrays the rocky hero himself! Meanwhile, Reed Richards and Sue Storm are engrossed in reading the latest newspaper headlines featuring the mysterious and enigmatic mutant team known as the X-Men.
As Ben Grimm shares the news, he recounts his recent encounter where he fought beside the young mutant known as Iceman. However, things take a turn as Ben inadvertently brings up Alicia’s step-father, the Puppet Master, which understandably upsets her. In a twist of fate, the Puppet Master has arranged a meeting with another adversary of the Fantastic Four—the clever and calculating Mad Thinker. Together, they hatch a plot to eliminate their common rivals.
The Mad Thinker has devised a plan to exploit the X-Men’s telepathic leader, Professor X, believing he can manipulate the mutants into attacking the Fantastic Four. With keen insight, he gathers circumstantial evidence to create a clay puppet that embodies a shadowy figure resembling Professor X. Despite its lack of facial features, this puppet has the power to enthrall Charles Xavier when he encounters it at the X-Men's school.
Under the Puppet Master's influence, Xavier reluctantly summons the X-Men, commanding them to attack the Fantastic Four. Confusion reigns among the mutant heroes as they grapple with the unexpected orders but, ultimately, they obey. They take to the skies in their helicopter, heading straight for the Baxter Building.
Upon arrival, the X-Men initially greet the Fantastic Four with camaraderie, as Reed welcomes them into their home. However, the atmosphere quickly shifts when Cyclops, the field leader of the X-Men, launches an unexpected assault using his optic blasts! The battles unfold with Cyclops and Beast confronting Mister Fantastic and the Human Torch, while Marvel Girl utilizes her telekinetic abilities against The Thing. Meanwhile, Angel and Iceman set their sights on the Invisible Girl.
As the male members of the Fantastic Four start to gain the upper hand in their skirmishes, Reed cleverly instructs his team to feign surrender. Seizing the opportunity, the X-Men escape the scene, taking Sue as a hostage. Driven by determination, Reed and the rest of the Fantastic Four pursue them using their Pogo Plane, leading them to the Mad Thinker's hideout where the X-Men are again commanded by Xavier to continue the fray against their foes.
This leads to a dramatic showdown, with the Mad Thinker unleashing a range of weapons designed to curb the Fantastic Four. During the chaos, the Puppet Master and Mad Thinker reveal their sinister plan, ordering Xavier to render the X-Men unconscious. However, Beast defies Xavier’s mental command, shattering the puppet that controls their leader.
As tensions rise, the Mad Thinker calls upon his Awesome Android for assistance, resulting in an intense clash with the X-Men. In the meantime, the Fantastic Four manage to free themselves from the Thinker's traps and rush to aid their fellow heroes. It’s a pivotal moment when Professor X steps up and defeats the Awesome Android by strategically applying mental pressure to its artificial nervous system.
Amidst the disarray, the Puppet Master and Mad Thinker make their hasty getaway, leaving their Awesome Android behind. With the immediate threat neutralized, Professor X instructs the X-Men to return home, highlighting the uncertain future of whether they will cross paths with the Fantastic Four again. It’s a thrilling adventure that leaves readers eager for more, as we wonder what lies ahead for these iconic teams!
