Another week is here, and my Flashback Music Friday feature is ready for an encore performance! It seems that my last post, along with my Spotify playlist "Vital Vinyl," was a huge hit with all of you, so who am I to deny my readers what they want? If you want the classics, then you shall have the classics. Today, I’ve curated some real gems. All five of these hits were on heavy rotation on either MTV or FM radio back in the day. If you managed to get through the '80s without hearing these songs or seeing these videos, then it must have been an Amish life for ye. Perhaps you were marooned on a tropical island or living in a cave in the Himalayas with a Yeti and a goat? Unless you were living the good life away from the rest of us, this will be a great trip down memory lane.
If you were a young man like me, you probably had a crush on either Stevie Nicks or Pat Benatar. I was a Stevie Nicks fan myself, which explains why I start to perspire a bit whenever I see a woman with a tambourine. Sadly, there aren’t many of those around anymore. Someone needs to bring back the tambourine for crying out loud!
Getting back on track, I recorded The Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again" off a Los Angeles radio station during a family vacation, along with Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run," Boz Scaggs' classic "Lowdown," the Doobie Brothers' hit "Long Train Runnin'," and many other classic rock staples. I wore that tape out! Honestly, I kind of wish I had saved it.
While I was never blinded by science, it did give me—and my high school classmates—a heck of a headache. Come to think of it, I believe one girl did go blind trying to work out an equation. Our teacher looooved math and could fill up two blackboards with numbers, plus signs, minus signs, and numbers in parentheses. I think there were some Egyptian hieroglyphics in there, maybe some ancient Hebrew symbols? I don't know. All these years later, I still have no idea what any of it meant. I really don’t think even he knew.
Speaking of ancient wisdom, if you can bang the gong, you can get it on. That’s something my brain can wrap itself around.
Wait, what?
Stevie Nicks - Stand Back
The Who - Won't Get Fooled Again
Thomas Dolby - She Blinded Me With Science
