This past weekend, my wife and I decided to explore Lufkin, a charming city in eastern Texas. We arrived around noon, so naturally, our first stop was for food. We noticed the usual fast-food chains everywhere, and just as we were about to settle for a local Whataburger, I spotted a retro drive-in across the street. Why choose something we could have anytime when we had the chance to enjoy some of the local flavors?
Ray's Drive-In has been a beloved hotspot in Lufkin since 1959, boasting that lovely vintage vibe. We’re both major burger fans, so I went for the cheeseburger with fries, while my wife opted for the patty melt with onion rings. Being in Texas, I couldn’t resist pairing my meal with a classic Dr Pepper. I have to say, the food was absolutely fantastic! My burger came out hot and fresh, with wonderfully melted cheese, and the fries were perfectly crispy and golden-brown.
I could see my wife was in burger bliss with her patty melt; she exclaimed that someone finally made it just the way she likes it. It seems no one back in Louisiana has quite mastered the art of the patty melt, but Ray's hit it out of the park. Her onion rings were equally delightful, with a light and flaky breading; she finished every last one.
Now, I must admit that my wife and I have had our share of ups and downs when it comes to picking local dining spots. I once chose a place in Williams, Arizona, that was so disappointing even our dog snubbed the leftovers! But Ray's was a refreshing change, and my wife even praised me for steering us there instead of one of the more familiar and safer burger chains. Points for Ken!
If you ever find yourself in east Texas, make sure to swing by Ray's Drive-In for some delicious food and a taste of classic American nostalgia!
