Photos and Story by Ken Hulsey
I’ve driven past Borden's Ice Cream Shoppe countless times during my trips to Lafayette, and each time, that charming forties-style building always draws my attention. I've wanted to check it out for so long, but as a diabetic, indulging in ice cream has always felt like a forbidden temptation. However, this past Saturday was special because my wife and I had our young granddaughter with us, which gave us the perfect reason to finally stop in.
What we discovered inside was an absolute delight—just as satisfying as the ice cream itself! The shop is a beautifully preserved gem, capturing the essence of a classic 1940s ice cream parlor. The ambiance alone brings you back in time, making it a wonderful spot for families and ice cream lovers alike. And as for the ice cream? In my opinion, it’s the best I’ve ever tasted, and yes, I couldn't resist having a little!
Conveniently, Borden's is just a short walk from the University of Louisiana and is located on the fringe of Lafayette's historic downtown district, making it an easy stop for anyone in the area. Don’t miss your chance to visit the last remaining Borden's Ice Cream Shoppe in the world, right here in Lafayette, Louisiana. Treat yourself to a scoop (or two!) and experience the delightful taste of ice cream prepared "the Old Fashion Way." You won't regret it!
