12th annual Mothman Festival

Walking through the streets of Point Pleasant, W.Va., is like strolling the archives of American history. Beneath the asphalt lies the earth where the first battle of the American Revolution was fought. Virginians and Native Americans bled and died on that land. Theirs are the bones on which America was built.

However, the most notable period in Point Pleasant's history was far more recent. The sudden appearance of the Mothman was alarming enough, but not as much as the tragic event that coincided with its disappearance.

Hundreds of people crowded the streets of downtown Point Pleasant on Sept. 21 and 22 to eat, listen to music and browse the Mothman related products offered by more than 40 vendors at the annual Mothman Festival.

The most popular attraction was the Mothman Museum, which houses historical documents and artifacts concerning the creature and other strange events that occurred in that time. It also contains an extensive collection of items and props from 2002’s “The Mothman Prophecies,” a film loosely based on the book of the same name.

Every year, the festival grows, attracting a greater number of people. Jeff Wamsley, the festival's director, credits the festival's creation and growing success to the rise of online media and the movie.

Every row of seats has it’s own table. When was the last time you had someone bring you beer and pizza in the dark? It’s damn spiffy! It reminds Mr. Lobo of the “Thrillville” shows we used to do back in California!

To wet your appetite even further we asked Bob Johnson, who runs Bay Area Film Events and the Sci-Fi Japan website, to say a few things about our Saturday program. Bob has been bringing Kaiju/Tokusatsu to the bay area over the last 30 years with events like GODZILLAFEST and ULTRAMANIA–which Mr. Lobo had the honor of co-hosting on the West Coast.

Virginia Bigfoot Sightings On The Rise?

I seem to have stumbled upon a trend. When I started covering more stories about cryptozoology in the later part of 2009, I expected to find numerous reports of Bigfoot sightings from the Pacific Northwest, the region of North America that has had the most sightings of the elusive creature for over two hundred years, but, to my amazement, no stories have been coming from there, at all.

Instead, there have been sightings reported in other regions of the country, like the East Coast and deep South. It seems that, like his human counterparts, Bigfoot and his relatives have become fed up with West Coast living, maybe because of California's high taxes, and moved to places like Maine, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Virginia.

In fact, it has been the woods of Virginia where a new wave of sightings of Bigfoot have been reported over the past six months.

The latest report to surface, comes from Grayson County in the southwest corner of Virginia, near the in Blue Ridge Mountains.

On the evening of January 28th a family was traveling north on Route 89, when they spotted a seven-foot-tall, creature covered in black hair, walking on two legs down the side of the road. When the animal saw the cars headlights, it disappeared into the pine forest out of sight.

The Grayson County Sheriff's Department got a call from the startled family reporting their strange encounter. Taking the report very seriously, Sheriff Richard Vaughan contacted the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, who in turn, dispatched two officers to area of the sighting.

After an extensive search, officers Jason Harris and George Shupe, reported that they found no trace of of the animal.

For decades the Blue Ridge Mountains have been home to numerous sightings of Bigfoot.

Last year there was a rash of sightings near Kanawha, West Virginia, the drew Bigfoot researchers to the area for extensive investigations, which didn't yield much evidence of the creatures existence.

Is the population of Bigfoot on the rise in the South? New evidence seems to be pointing that way, though areas of Arkansas, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida have been areas of numerous, credible, sightings for decades.

Tom Biscardi Brings A Film Crew To West Virginia To Find Bigfoot

Country signer Kris Allen says that he has been seeing Bigfoot in his native West Virginia since he was eight years old. The sightings have often left him terrified, yet he has turned his fear into determination to prove that the creature is indeed real.

Allen is so motivated to prove the existence of Bigfoot that he has lured the often controversial crypto researcher Tom Biscardi to his home state in hopes of capturing the elusive animal on film, possibly by a film crew filming Biscardi.

For the past year, a crew from California-based Golden Leaf Pictures has been following Biscardi around the country documenting his exploits for a 3D film about the researcher, and Bigfoot sightings, to be released next spring.

Biscardi will be bringing all of the state-of-the-art equipment he can muster to try and find evidence of the mysterious creature, including video cameras with night-vision capabilities.

The researcher will set up camp in the Kanawha State Forest this upcoming weekend. Due to the belief that the Bigfoot species is nocturnal, the expedition will be doing their hunting between 10 p.m. and 3 a.m.

According to Allen the area around Kanawha is a literal 'hot-spot' for seeing Bigfoot, in fact he and his young son saw one of them in the area just last week.

Biscardi has been in contact with Allen for the past nine months and believes that the lead signer for the band Southern Thunder, is a credible witness. The fact that the number of sightings in the woods of West Virginia has spiked over the last few weeks, has convinced the researcher that now is the time to put together his investigation.

Biscardi notes, "He comes with a lot of credibility (Allen)..... he and his wife have been having these sightings of these creatures, these primates."

"These creatures are on their migrational path right now. Right now, they're in abundance. And because of the weather, you're experiencing this a lot sooner than the West Coast."

Allen first saw two Bigfoot near Sherwood Lake in Greenbrier County ripping the bark off trees about fifteen years ago. Ever since then he has been both frightened and fascinated by the creatures. He has been doing his own amateur research on the mysterious monsters ever since.

"From there on, I became an investigator," he said. "I have spent countless hours in the woods with cameras. I have taken hundreds of photos of foot tracks. I have feces from them. They are omnivorous and nocturnal."

"A lot of people don't talk about the strange things they see in the woods because they don't want people to laugh at them," he said.

"I want proof. I want proof that the world can see. I don't want anyone to doubt me again."

With any luck, Biscardi will be able to find the kind of evidence that will add credibility to these sightings.

Of course, this all hinges on the film team securing the proper permits before the weekend. The offices of the West Virginia Film Office has been notified of the weekend shoot, and so has the National Park Service, though the special permit to film in the Kanawha State Forest while it is closed overnight has not yet been secured.
