Controlling Anger - Saving Relationships | Emotional Mastery

Understanding Anger

Uncontrolled, persistent anger will ultimately damage your precious relationships. To truly change the negative outcomes (the fruit), we must address the underlying causes (the root). The journey to managing anger begins with humility—simply asking for help when we need it. As James 4:10 reminds us, "Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up," and James 5:16 encourages us to "confess your trespasses to one another... that you may be healed" (NKJV).

Own Your Emotions - Lead Your Emotions | Emotional Maturity

Owning and leading our emotions is a critical skill for achieving emotional maturity and living a happy, fulfilling life. Our emotions are powerful forces that can either propel us forward or hold us back, depending on how well we manage them. It's all too easy to let our emotions run wild, blaming our circumstances or other people for how we feel. But the truth is, we are ultimately responsible for our own emotional state. By learning to take control of our mind and emotions, we can cultivate a sense of inner peace and contentment that isn't dependent on external factors. As the Bible teaches, "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances." (Philippians 4:11) True, lasting happiness comes from within, from being filled with the Spirit and exhibiting its fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23) Leading our emotions is especially important in relationships. Unhealthy, out-of-control emotions can quickly poison the dynamic between partners, friends or family members. If someone claims to love you but exhibits toxic emotional patterns, they may need to relearn the true definition of love - one of patience, kindness, humility, selflessness and forgiveness. (1 Corinthians 13:4-8) Developing emotional maturity takes intentional effort and self-awareness. We must actively cultivate positive emotions while managing negative ones. Prayer, seeking wise counsel, and focusing on giving to others are all powerful tools for emotional growth. As Jesus taught, "Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." (Matthew 6:21) The more we prioritize the right things, the more our emotions will naturally align. Growing emotionally is a lifelong journey, one that requires continual learning and development. But the rewards - deeper relationships, unshakeable inner peace, and a more meaningful life - are more than worth the effort. - James W. Greer (Journey Church)
