Todd McFarlane Sets A World Record With Spawn

On October 9, 2019, with the publishing of SPAWN 301, Todd McFarlane will step into uncharted territory in the comic world! Todd McFarlane will officially earned the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the longest-running creator-owned superhero comic book series for his creation of SPAWN.

"Any record that is based on longevity, is made on the backs of dozens of people," said McFarlane. "As much as I am proud to be receiving this award, I gratefully accept it on behalf of all those who helped me the past 27 years on this journey."

Fans are invited to witness McFarlane receive his official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS certificate next week at New York Comic Con! The ceremony will be taking place on Saturday, October 5th prior to McFarlane's very own panel, "The Road to Historic SPAWN 300 and 301." The panel will be taking place in Room #1A10 from 5:45- 6:45 P.M.

GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator, Claire Elise Stephens, will be presenting McFarlane with his award, and added: "I'm incredibly honored to be presenting this GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title to Todd McFarlane in honor of SPAWN 301 at an event that celebrates creators with such enthusiasm. Todd McFarlane displays immense passion, a key value of our mission and this achievement is a recognition of Todd's nearly three-decade career."

Fans who have been following the series understand that this was no easy feat. The SPAWN comic book series was first published in 1992 by Image Comics and sold over 1.7 million copies. Following SPAWN'S initial success, the series was curated into a feature film in 1997. This means the story of SPAWN has been evolving for almost three-decades in order to achieve this goal.

The fictional character SPAWN has been imbedded into the lives of many fans due to his natural timelessness. Fans need not worry, this is not the end of the road for SPAWN, there is more to come! For now, fans let us celebrate the success SPAWN has seen in becoming the longest-running creator-owned superhero comic book series!

With its 301st issue, Todd McFarlane’s SPAWN becomes the longest running creator-owned comic book in the world!

SPAWN launched to record sales of 1.7 million copies when its inaugural issue was released in 1992, helping to cement the early days of Image Comics as a game-changing, new era in creator-owned comic books. Now, 27-years later SPAWN, and Image Comics remain hallmarks of the comic book industry.

As a testament to the longevity of Todd McFarlane’s seminal creation, and to Image Comics’ revolutionary call for creators’ rights to own and control the characters and comic books they create, SPAWN’s 301st issue will be a truly historic release, as McFarlane’s award-winning, fan-favorite superhero, will become the longest running creator-owned comic book ever.

"I could think of no better reason to return to the drawing board than to celebrate the record-breaking 301st issue of the SPAWN comic,” said McFarlane, creator of SPAWN and President at Image Comics. “Twenty-seven years ago, I began this journey on the SPAWN title. That start, along with helping to co-found Image Comics, (today the third largest comic publisher in the nation) was with the goal of allowing creative people to own and control their ideas.

“It is with great pride that I can say that after nearly three decades of producing the SPAWN title, that I am still 100% in the creative driver's seat of the character I brought to life back in 1992,” said McFarlane. “I wrote and drew that first issue and will do the same for this historic issue as well."

To continue the celebration that begins with the deluxe sized, 72-page issue of SPAWN #300, McFarlane will return, once more, to pencil and ink interior story pages for the record-breaking SPAWN #301. Showcasing his unique blend of larger-than-life action and visual world-building, McFarlane will usher in SPAWN’s next creative evolution in his signature “hyper-detailed” style that has been an inspiration to artists and storytellers across all genres of entertainment media.

Joining Todd on SPAWN #301’s superstar creative team will be legendary SPAWN and Batman artist, Greg Capullo, critically-acclaimed illustrator, Jason Shawn Alexander, top comic artists, Clayton Crain, Jerome Opeña and Francesco Mattina, along with more surprises, including more top-tier comic book talent.

SPAWN #301, a 48-page full-color comic book will be in stores September 25, 2019. Also available will be black and white Spawn #301 “Artist Edition” variant showcasing McFarlane and Capullo’s original, inked artwork.

Todd McFarlane has certainly shown he knows how to talk up his directorial debut, “Spawn,” before a frame has even been shot. The comic creator has been eager to finally realize his own vision of his character on the big screen, and he’s been going on and on about how it’s gonna be soooooo R-rated. Enthusiasm is fine, but when you start taking shots at other comic book movies, ones that arguably paved he way for your film to be made, a little humility would probably go a long way.

Rolling through ACE Comic-Con, McFarlane once again talked up how super duper dark “Spawn” will be, and dumped on “Deadpool” in the process.

“It’s funny in Hollywood, if you say you want to do an R-rated movie, they go like ‘Oh like Deadpool and like Logan?’ For me, no. Deadpool, to me, was a PG-13 action movie. It just had some naked butts and a couple f-bombs. Other than that, I thought it was the same PG-13 formula,” he said.

Todd McFarlane and his entertainment division (McFarlane Films) is partnering with Jason Blum and Blumhouse Productions, the producing force behind recent hits Get Out and Split and The Purge franchise, to develop a feature film around the Spawn comic character created by McFarlane and published by Image Comics.

McFarlane has written the first draft of the screenplay and is set to make his directorial debut in this dark exploration of one of comics’ most popular characters. McFarlane is known for reinventing the look of Spider-Man as well as co-creating the Venom character for Marvel Comics.
