Cover work by the legendary Jack Kirby with pencils and Dick Ayers on inks sets the stage for an exciting adventure in “Calamity on the Campus!” The storyline, expertly penned by Stan Lee, features Kirby's brilliant artwork and is further enhanced by Chic Stone's inking. The plot kicks off as Reed Richards is invited back to his beloved State University to give a lecture, and he brings along his trusty teammates from the Fantastic Four.
Upon arriving, they meet with Dean Mencken, and during their visit, they stumble upon Charles Xavier and his student, Scott Summers. The two are secretly investigating reports of mutants on campus, adding an intriguing layer to the narrative. As the four heroes mingle about, they pass by Professor Gilbert's lab and are taken aback by his latest creation—a towering android designed to resemble a dragon.
Meanwhile, a sinister plot unfolds in far-off Transylvania where Diablo manages to break free from his confinement. With a vengeful heart, he teleports away, seeking spite against the Fantastic Four for their previous encounter that left him trapped.
Back on campus, Professor Gilbert enlists the help of the Thing for some heavy lifting. As the duo works, they unexpectedly run into Peter Parker, who is exploring the university to make a decision about his future post-high school. Unbeknownst to the Torch and the Thing, Peter has a secret life as Spider-Man, which adds an interesting twist to their interactions.
While the male members of the Fantastic Four engage in a football game against the university team, Sue unexpectedly catches a glimpse of Diablo in a car. Although she partially recognizes his face, he manages to slip away before she can get a better look. Later, Diablo approaches Professor Gilbert and presents a tantalizing offer—using alchemy to animate his massive dragon-like android.
As the experiment unfolds, the Thing grows bored listening to Reed's lecture and wanders off, only to confront Diablo. In a twist of fate, he inadvertently triggers the activation of the android, known as Dragon Man. What ensues is a chaotic battle that transitions outside, where the rest of the Fantastic Four jumps to Ben's aid. They quickly discover that Dragon Man has become infatuated with Sue, complicating the fight further.
Just as the atmosphere intensifies, the heroes are incapacitated by a gas attack. When they regain consciousness, they learn that Diablo, along with Professor Gilbert and Dragon Man, has retreated to a foreboding place called Dead Man's Lake. With determination, they track their foes to the lake, where Diablo attempts a desperate escape by freezing the water beneath him, hoping to skate away.
However, the plot thickens when Dragon Man turns against him. Their combined weight proves too much for the fragile ice, which shatters dramatically, sending both Diablo and Dragon Man plunging into the icy depths below. An undertow drags them into mysterious underwater caves, losing them from sight.
In a sweeter turn of events, following the chaos and danger, Reed takes Sue to the enchanting sweetheart tree on campus. There, he summons the courage to propose to her, and in a moment filled with joy and love, she accepts! This heartfelt conclusion not only ties together their adventure but also highlights the deeper connections amidst the action-packed narrative.
