My wife loves to reminisce about the restaurants we used to visit when we lived in California. Tonight, she mentioned In-N-Out, and immediately, I thought of a Double-Double and Animal Style Fries. As soon as those thoughts crossed my mind, my taste buds started craving it. The dilemma is that we are in Alexandria, Louisiana, and the nearest In-N-Out is a four-hour drive away in Dallas.
Wait—only a four-hour drive? Hmm, let’s gas up the Kia; I feel a road trip brewing!
As many of you know, my favorite hamburger chain is Blake's Lottaburger in New Mexico, but In-N-Out holds a solid second place. I haven't had it since 2020 when I traveled back to California for our son's wedding. Nobody should have to go without a Double-Double and Animal Style Fries for three years—it feels like a violation of the Geneva Convention or the Magna Carta, perhaps even something more spiritual! Anyway, it just doesn't seem right. Okay, maybe I'm being a bit dramatic here.

The truth is, the food at In-N-Out is amazing! Once you try one of their burgers, you’ll understand why I’m willing to drive four hours just to have one.
One of the charms of dining at In-N-Out is the simplicity of the menu. While other chains continually add and remove items, In-N-Out keeps it straightforward: three types of burgers (a regular Hamburger, a Cheeseburger, and the Double-Double), Fries, and a fountain drink. That’s it.
Well, perhaps that’s not entirely accurate, because they do have a secret menu with items not listed on the regular menu. For example, I was craving Animal Style Fries, which aren’t mentioned on the menu. Animal Style Fries are fries topped with Thousand Island dressing and cheese. It may sound unusual, but it’s incredibly delicious—trust me!
In-N-Out may be a well-known burger chain today, but it started as a humble little burger stand in Baldwin Park, California, in 1948. Harry Snyder and his wife, Esther, opened the first drive-thru in California right next to their home. Today, there are over 300 In-N-Out restaurants across California, Oregon, Arizona, Nevada, and Texas, with plans for new franchises in Tennessee.
Is anybody up for a road trip to Texas?
