Written By Ken HulseyHave you ever sensed that the universe was sending you a message? For me, over the past three days, that message has revolved around the fast food gem known as Del Taco. It all kicked off when my wife reminisced about the delight of Taco Tuesdays, where three tasty tacos only set you back $1.49 (I remember when it was just 99 cents!). Then, just yesterday, while tuning into a radio station from Albuquerque, New Mexico (KDRF 103.3 eD FM), I caught a commercial touting that Del Taco now has twenty items priced under $2. Talk about a coincidence
To top it all off, today at work, a coworker mentioned that her sister is employed at - you guessed it - Del Taco in Barstow. Fun fact: I currently reside in Louisiana, and there’s not a Del Taco within several hundred miles of me! However, my time living in California left me with cherished memories of enjoying their food, and I honestly believe that Del Taco is far superior to its bigger competitor, Taco Bell. While Taco Bell has its merits, Del Taco serves up mouthwatering tacos, burritos, and nachos that are simply irresistible, all alongside delicious burgers and fries at remarkably affordable prices.
Now, let’s dive a bit into the history of Del Taco! It all began in 1964 when Ed Hackbarth and David Jameson opened the first Del Taco in Yermo, CA, featuring items like 19-cent tacos and cheeseburgers for just 24 cents. They made $169 on their very first day—that’s the equivalent of around 900 tacos! The 1970s marked a period of incredible growth for Del Taco, with the number of restaurants hitting 100 by 1978. The menu expanded as well, introducing exciting choices like the bun taco, quesadillas, and even ice cream sundaes.
In 1988, Del Taco grew even larger by merging with the Naugles restaurant chain and adapting to the 24/7 lifestyle by staying open all night. Fast forward to 2024: Del Taco earned the title of America’s Favorite Fast Food in USA Today’s annual reader-ranked survey, knocking Chick-fil-A off the top spot! It’s fantastic to see how this beloved brand continues to capture the hearts—and appetites—of people across the nation.
