Laeta Kalogridis To Write 3D 'Ghost In The Shell'

Dreamworks has just signed Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) to write the live-action 3D adaptation of Masamune Shirow's manga and anime, "Ghost in the Shell".

Kalogridis replaces Jamie Moss, who was hired on when Dreamworks acquired the rights to the Japanese series last year. The writer, who has recently worked with Martin Scorsese, joins a production team that includes producers Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Steven Paul of Seaside Entertainment .

Here is the plot:

Ghost in the Shell is a futuristic police thriller dealing with the exploits of the cyborg Motoko Kusanagi, a member of a covert operations division of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission known as Section 9. The unit specializes in fighting technology-related crimes. Kusanagi may be named after one of the three Imperial Regalia of Japan, and Shirow makes reference to them at the end of the second manga. Although supposedly equal to all other members, Kusanagi fills the leadership role in the team, and is usually referred to as "the Major" due to her past rank in the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. She is capable of superhuman feats, and bionically specialized for her job, her body is almost completely mechanized; only her brain and a segment of her spinal cord remain organic.

Great idea for a live-action movie, I just hope Hollywood can do it justice.
