The Creature From The Black Lagoon Gets A Bad-Ass Makeover?

As many of you know, the remake of the classic Universal sci fi/horror film "Creature From The Black Lagoon" has been in different stages of development for several years now. When I first learned about the project I was pretty scared, no I was terrified. I just couldn't imagine what a modern take on the 50s monster movie would look like? I was very afraid that in the hands of a modern director the film would become a disaster. That was until I saw these concept images of the "Gill-Man".

Vincent Guastini, the man that Universal has put in charge of designing the 'updated' version of the "Creature" has just released these images of what he wants the monster to look like. I have to admit that as a 'huge' "Creature From The Black Lagoon" fan, I'm impressed!

Now, Universal hasn't signed off on this design yet, but from what we can see here, there is room for some optimism.

Guastini explains. “At this moment, I have some idea which direction they're going in, but as of now, it’s still ongoing and we’ll have to see what the outcome of this will be. These are my ideas that are both traditional and freshened up, without destroying the classic original.

We also did a version that was an exact replica of the original creature as a model to give them a full idea where we are going from, and what improvements we can make and the possibilities of what the Creature could look like. Whatever happens I feel very confident that whichever direction Universal goes in will be the right one.”

Let me tell you, if this is what the "Creature" is going to actually look like, then you are looking at one happy camper!

I may start lining up for the film now!

  1. Love this design! Sadly, the fact that Universal allowed him to distribute these images is a likely indicator that this will not end up being the look of the new Gill-man. But, like you, I will remain optimistic.

  2. Didn't know about plans for a remake until I read this. Reminds me how effective that original design was. Been way too long since I watched "Creature".

  3. I'm loving the "Pumpkinhead" look... AWESOME design, although I'm sure it'll never see daylight. The Creature MUST have a believable pathos, it has to have a soul, because the Creature is the VICTIM, and I hope Gary sticks to that precept.
