Back in January when I learned that The Asylum was making a movie called "Mega Piranha" starring 80s pop sensation, Tiffany, and former "Brady Bunch" star Barry Williams, I couldn't help but chuckle.
It seems that the studio who has made a living out of copying other studio's movies, was now copying itself.
As you probably already now, The Asylum released the movie "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus", which starred 80s pop sensation, Debbie Gibson, last year.
Debbie Gibson....Tiffany......giant Piranha's....giant shark, giant octopus.
Seems a little bit like the exact same thing being redone again, doesn't it?
Well today the trailer came out, and my chuckle turned into roaring laughter.
For years The Asylum has been known for putting out some really corny movies, but this time, they have really outdone themselves. Piranhas jumping out of the water and attacking helicopters, plucking paratroopers from the sky, wrestling with 80s red-headed pop stars and 70s sitcom actors. It's something you have to see to believe. That's why I have the trailer for you below:
"Mega Piranha" airs this Saturday on the SyFy Channel, and trust me, you don't want to miss this!
Here is the press release:
Brady Bunch alum Barry Williams teams with pop singer Tiffany to save Florida from a giant piranha and Jewel Staite takes on the infamous American-born legend, The Mothman, when Syfy celebrates spring with a pair of pass-the-pizza-and-beer Saturday Original Movies.
In Mega Piranha, premiering on Saturday, April 10, at 9PM (ET/PT), Barry Williams, 1980s singing sensation Tiffany and Paul Logan (Megafault) form an unusual alliance to stop a mutant strain of giant ferocious piranhas that have escaped from the Amazon and are eating their way to Florida. Produced by David Michael Latt, David Rimawi and Paul Bales. Directed and written by Eric Forsberg.
Jewel Staite (Firefly, Stargate Atlantis) stars in Mothman, premiering Saturday, April 24, at 9PM (ET/PT). You neglected to mention the real reason The Asylum made this movie... to cash in on Alex Aja's 3D remake of PIRANHA, which was originally slated to be released this month (but was bumped back to August to avoid competition with KICK ASS). At any rate, I'm very much looking forward to MEGAPIRANHA!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could believe that "Mega Piranha" might actually be as entertaining at the trailer makes it look. But since it's an Asylum film that's not likely. But hey, since it stars Barry Williams how can I not watch it?
ReplyDelete"Brady Bunch alum Barry Williams teams with pop singer Tiffany to save Florida from a giant piranha..."
ReplyDeleteOkay, that might just be THE GREATEST tagline EVER created!! Hahahahaha!
The film itself turned out to be everything you'd expect - hilarious. Yes, it gets bogged down in padding at times, but there's almost always something happening on-screen to make the viewer giggle. The piranha change size from shot to shot, leap out of the water to attack buildings, are invulnerable to nuclear blasts (but can be blown up by a simple armor-piercing round), and have a seemingly voracious appetite for metal, wood, etc. The performances are unforgettable, with star Paul Logan appearing to be carved out of wood and Tiffany shouting and wildly gesticulating as though having to use every ounce of her strength to remember her lines. The "science" on display would make a third grader roll on the floor with laughter, and the piranha aren't the only ones who defy natural law. In my favorite scene, Logan, Tiffany, and another scientist are fleeing through a border crossing from a crazed Venezuelan officer. Logan tells his fellow travelers to make themselves "invisible" while he bluffs his way through the gate, and apparently they do just that. When the sentry looks in the car, Logan is the only one in it, despite an obvious absence of hiding places for his compadres. Logan punches the guard and tears off through the checkpoint - and, in the very next shot, Tiffany and the other guy are right back in their seats!!! Small wonder these scientific geniuses can also make piranha that double in size every half hour (at one point, according to one character, growing from the size of a horse to the size of a rhino?!?!?), since they've already mastered the art of turning themselves transparent to the naked eye. Hooray for The Asylum!
