Its Debbie Gibson vs Tiffany (Oops) I Mean Mega Python Vs Gatoroid On SyFy

Source: NBC / Universal

In what promises to be the television movie event of 2011, 1980s singing sensations Debbie Gibson and Tiffany get down and dirty in their long-awaited pop princess smackdown when they co-star in the ripped-from-the-headlines Syfy Saturday Original Movie, Mega Python Vs Gatoroid, which will premiere Saturday, January 29, at 9PM (ET/PT).

A production of The Asylum, Mega Python Vs Gatoroid takes an up-close-and-personal look at the crisis in the Florida Everglades where invasive Burmese pythons are threatening the indigenous alligator population. Gibson portrays a fanatical animal rights advocate who spends her evenings “liberating” illegally imported exotic snakes from pet stores and setting them free in the Everglades, where the pythons grow and thrive.

Tiffany plays an over-zealous park ranger worried about the growing ecological damage. To save her beloved alligators, she’s willing to employ dubious methods, overdosing them with steroids so they grow mega, setting off a war between the species – and putting her on a collision course with Gibson.

Mary Lambert (Pet Sematary) is director of Mega Python Vs Gatoroid – the first time a woman has directed a Syfy Saturday Original Movie. The writer is Naomi Selfman (Evil Eyes).

In their most recent Syfy roles, Tiffany starred in Mega Piranha, while Gibson starred in Mega Shark Vs Giant Octopus.

Tiffany at age 15 was the youngest female artist to have a #1 debut album. Her global smash hits include I Think We’re Alone Now, Could’ve Been, I Saw Him Standing There, and All this Time…selling more than 15 million records worldwide. To this day, her groundbreaking “mall tour” sets the precedent to launch young musical careers. Venturing into acting, Tiffany starred as the voice of “Judy Jetson” in Jetsons: The Movie and has appeared in many award winning indie festival films. In 2002 Tiffany graced the cover of Playboy; her pictorial became one of the best selling issues of all time. Her album The Color of Silence was named “one of the finest pop albums of 2000” by Billboard. 2007 marked her return to the Billboard charts with three Dance Hits. Tiffany makes her home in Nashville with her husband and son, and is currently writing and recording her country music debut.

Debbie Gibson began her career at 16 with the hit Only in My Dreams. She has sold 16 million albums and still holds the world's record for being the youngest writer/producer/performer of a #1 hit. She went on to star in critically acclaimed Broadway shows such as Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast, and Cabaret, among others. She originated Sandy in the West End revival of Grease, breaking box office records. Gibson received rave reviews for her sold-out, one-woman show, Pop Goes Broadway, with critics calling it "the best show of the year at Harrah's." She also guest starred in Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy at MGM/Foxwoods. Currently, Gibson runs her "Electric Youth" summer camp and music programs throughout the year to mentor young aspiring songwriters and performers, as well as awards scholarships through her “Gibson Girl Foundation.” She’s also a spokesperson for Murad, Inc. As the new spokesperson for Children International, she recently spent time in impoverished villages in Manila. Her new album for Sony Japan, Ms. Vocalist, is presently Top 10 in the Billboard Charts with the first single I Love You at #1. She will be doing a concert tour overseas in February 2011.

The Trailer For The Asylum's 'Mega Piranha' - Get Ready To Laugh Your Butt Off!

Back in January when I learned that The Asylum was making a movie called "Mega Piranha" starring 80s pop sensation, Tiffany, and former "Brady Bunch" star Barry Williams, I couldn't help but chuckle.

It seems that the studio who has made a living out of copying other studio's movies, was now copying itself.

As you probably already now, The Asylum released the movie "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus", which starred 80s pop sensation, Debbie Gibson, last year.

Debbie Gibson....Tiffany......giant Piranha's....giant shark, giant octopus.

Seems a little bit like the exact same thing being redone again, doesn't it?

Well today the trailer came out, and my chuckle turned into roaring laughter.

For years The Asylum has been known for putting out some really corny movies, but this time, they have really outdone themselves. Piranhas jumping out of the water and attacking helicopters, plucking paratroopers from the sky, wrestling with 80s red-headed pop stars and 70s sitcom actors. It's something you have to see to believe. That's why I have the trailer for you below:

"Mega Piranha" airs this Saturday on the SyFy Channel, and trust me, you don't want to miss this!

Here is the press release:

Brady Bunch alum Barry Williams teams with pop singer Tiffany to save Florida from a giant piranha and Jewel Staite takes on the infamous American-born legend, The Mothman, when Syfy celebrates spring with a pair of pass-the-pizza-and-beer Saturday Original Movies.

In Mega Piranha, premiering on Saturday, April 10, at 9PM (ET/PT), Barry Williams, 1980s singing sensation Tiffany and Paul Logan (Megafault) form an unusual alliance to stop a mutant strain of giant ferocious piranhas that have escaped from the Amazon and are eating their way to Florida. Produced by David Michael Latt, David Rimawi and Paul Bales. Directed and written by Eric Forsberg.

Jewel Staite (Firefly, Stargate Atlantis) stars in Mothman, premiering Saturday, April 24, at 9PM (ET/PT). In the movie, the legendary West Virginia monster returns to exact revenge on five childhood friends who covered up an accidental killing. Produced by Brad Krevoy and Reuben Liber. Directed by Sheldon Wilson. Written by Sonny Lee and Patrick Walsh.

Syfy is a media destination for imagination-based entertainment. With year round acclaimed original series, events, blockbuster movies, classic science fiction and fantasy programming, a dynamic Web site (www.Syfy.com), and a portfolio of adjacent business (Syfy Ventures), Syfy is a passport to limitless possibilities. Originally launched in 1992 as SCI FI Channel, and currently in more than 96 million homes, Syfy is a network of NBC Universal, one of the world's leading media and entertainment companies. (Syfy. Imagine greater.)

Yeh, I think I can imagine something greater......but, probably not funnier.

Tiffany To Star In The Asylum's 'Very Brady' Megapiranha Movie

Written By: Ken Hulsey

You have to hand it to creative people over at The Asylum, when they come up with something that works, they stay with it.

As most of you probably remember, one of the most talked about movies of 2009 was the independent studio's "Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus", which starred 80s pop sensation, Debbie Gibson. The film got a huge amount of press on this site,on MTV, and even Entertainment Tonight.

It seems that the formula of adding an 80s female pop star, plus some sort of giant sea creature, equals success, and that is exactly what happened with "Mega Shark."

It should come as no surprise to anyone that the studio that has made a name for itself cloning big-budget Hollywood movies, would use the exact same formula once again for their upcoming film, "Megapiranha".

This time, however, it is not Debbie Gibson who will be battling giant mutant man-eaters from the deep, instead it will be Tiffany.

You may remember Tiffany by her mega-hit "I Think We're Alone Now", a cover of the song first made famous by Tommy James & the Shondells. You may also remember the buxom red-head from her rather sizzling photo shoot for Playboy magazine.

Come to think of it, Debbie Gibson posed for Playboy too........I think that I'm starting to see a pattern here.

Paul Bales of The Asylum gives us a little insight on how big the ravenous fish in his movie get.

"The piranha in our movie are a mutant strain that start off normal size and then grow to about 100 meters as the movie progresses.

There are HUNDREDS of them and they eat EVERYTHING."

100-meter long piranha! That's rather impressive, then again, so was a shark big enough to eat the Golden Gate Bridge.

Oh, before I forget, The Asylum has also dipped into the collective consciousness of American pop-culture to select Tiffany's co-star, Barry Williams from the 70s family sitcom, "The Brady Bunch."

"Megapiranha" is being written and directed by Eric Forsberg who has brought such memorable classics as, "Snakes on a Train", "30,000 Leagues Under the Sea" and "War of the Worlds 2: The Next Wave."

Now lets see if big piranha can generate as much press as giant sharks and octopuses can?

There is such a thing as going to the well once to often and it looks like The Asylum is going to milk this kind of thing for all its worth.
