"Locusts" was a television movie starring Lucy Lawless ("Xena Warrior Princess," "Tarzan"), It was originally broadcast as the "CBS Sunday Movie," Sunday, April 24, 2005 (9:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network
In the disaster drama, a deadly breed of bioengineered locusts create a new and unimaginable threat to the United States by forming multiple swarms covering thousands of square miles and destroying everything in their path.
Dr. Maddy Rierdon (Lawless), a USDA voracious insect expert, is hoping to work on her struggling marriage when a locust outbreak erupts on both coasts of the United States. After she is called upon to assess the situation, Maddy discovers that the locust swarms are a product of a colleague's experiment, and are in fact bioengineered super locusts that can reproduce at a rate 10 times greater than a typical one. They are also three times longer than an ordinary locust, can travel approximately 300 miles a day and could be capable of devouring an entire continent.

LOCUSTS was produced by von Zerneck-Sertner Films. Frank von Zerneck and Robert Sertner ("Category 6: Day of Destruction") and Jill Tanner ("They Shoot Divas, Don't They") are the executive producers; Randy Sutter ("Category 6: Day of Destruction") and Peter Sadowski ("The Elizabeth Smart Story") are the producers. David Jackson ("The Jesse Ventura Story") directed from a script by Doug Prochilo.

I wish they would have made more of these Lucy Lawless "nature gone awry" films. They weren't great movies, but they were fun, and I liked the idea of Lawless' Maddy Rierdon character becoming a sort of female Quatermass in an ongoing series. I guess VAMPIRE BATS must not have done well enough in the ratings to justify more entries.
