Vampirella #1 Becomes Dynamite's Highest Selling Comic Book Ever

From Dynamite

Vampirella is flying high for her big 50th anniversary! Dynamite proudly announces that the upcoming Vampirella #1 has blasted through expectations and is a massive success! The upcoming issue by writer Christopher Priest, artist Ergün Gündüz and a range of top tier cover artists fronted by Frank Cho will have an initial print run of 130 thousand copies!

This historic number includes all orders through Diamond, specialty retailers and creator exclusive covers. This incredible sales number is the highest for a full price comic in Dynamite's storied 15 year history. Furthermore, 130 thousand copies is higher than all recorded paid circulation numbers for the original Vampirella magazine - making this possibly also the best selling Vampirella comic book of all time! Dynamite cannot wait to see where things shake out on the charts with such strong offerings from competitors in July!

Dynamite is confident in this blockbuster new series and made the first issue returnable for retailers, which is also continuing for the second issue to allow retailers to order aggressively with minimal risk and maximum reward. Retailers can order without worry and be prepared to serve the needs of Vampirella diehards who go back 50 years themselves as well as the growing crowd of new fans!

"We cannot express enough how appreciative we are for the support from fans, retailers as well as support from retailers outside of the direct market and talent who have created covers for their own sales," said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. "We knew we had a great creative team on this title with the incredible Christopher Priest being complemented by the lush art of Ergün Gündüz, and breathtaking covers to match. The 50th Anniversary will only happen once, so everything had to be perfect. Everyone from the creative team, editorial and sales & marketing worked hard together at all levels to make this a success. It's incredibly gratifying to get such a welcoming response back."

Dynamite's team is already working hard to continue this success through the year and moving forward. Vampirella #2 features an eye-popping main cover from Stanley "Artgerm" Lau, perhaps the biggest artist in the industry today. Then the next issue is spearheaded by the iconic J. Scott Campbell. Each issue features additional covers from talented artists as well as top cosplay models. Maybe there will be more Artgerm... Maybe one of the greatest comic artists of all time will bow out with a Vampirella cover as his final work... With the multiple Eisner Award-winning Jordie Bellaire writing the ongoing Vampirella/Red Sonja and even more surprises in 2019, it's shaking out to be quite the celebration!

Initial orders for Vampirella #2 are due this Thursday June 27.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters Soundtrack Coming To Vinyl!

From Wax Work Records

Godzilla: King of the Monsters Original Motion Picture Soundtrack! Featuring music by Emmy® and BAFTA Award winning composer Bear McCreary (10 Cloverfield Lane, TV’s The Walking Dead), in two special deluxe triple LP vinyl configurations. Written and Directed by Michael Dougherty (Trick ‘r Treat, Krampus) and starring Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things), Vera Farmiga (The Conjuring), Kyle Chandler (Super 8), and Ken Watanabe (Isle of Dogs, Inception), Godzilla: King of the Monsters is the highly anticipated next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic Monsterverse - an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.

Composer Bear McCreary’s (10 Cloverfield Lane, Happy Death Day, and TV’s The Walking Dead) music is a two-year-long labor of love dubbed a “Monster Opera” by director Michael Dougherty, and a crucial element to the film. Each “kaiju” is given a voice in this epic opera - Godzilla is presented with heroic, guttural vocalizations. King Ghidorah presented with dark, hypnotic chanting. Mothra by way of an ethereal female choir. Rodan’s voice is achieved by orchestral French horns pushed to their very limit to “scream” ripping roars.

Incorporated and adapted are both the legendary Godzilla theme by Akira Ifukube, and the immortal “Mothra’s Song” by Yuji Koseki. Also included is the McCreary-adapted eternal classic “Godzilla” by Blue Öyster Cult, featuring Serj Tankian (System Of A Down) on lead vocals, and musicians Brendon Small, Bryan Beller, and Gene Hoglan who form the Dethklok rhythm section of from TV’s Metalocalypse.

“Constructicons Rising” Storyline Unearths the Bots that Built Cybertron… and Threaten to Tear It All Down!

From IDW Comics

Beginning in September, IDW Publishing proudly builds upon the success of 2019’s bold new era of Transformers comic books with its first spin-off series: Transformers: Galaxies! Featuring story arcs that delve deeper into the origins, motivations, and world-shattering machinations of the extended Transformers cast, Galaxies launches with a story arc dedicated to the fan-favorite crew, the Constructicons!

Written by Vox Media co-founder and lifelong Transformers devotee Tyler Bleszinski, with luscious artwork by longtime Transformers artist, Livio Ramondelli, Transformers:Galaxies #1 uncovers the hidden secrets of Cybertron’s vast beauty and extraordinary cityscapes. Long ago, after the War Against the Threefold Spark ended, the Constructicons emerged to help rebuild the decimated planet in grand fashion. But what happened to them in the years since? Why had they been erased from Cybertron’s history… and what have they been planning for their devastating return?

“I’ve dreamed of the day that I could somehow be involved in the Transformers universe,” says Bleszinski. “Humanizing the Constructicons in a refreshed origin story with Livio Ramondelli – one of the most talented Transformers artists ever – will be one of the highlights of my life and will give me the opportunity to share my passion for these incredible creations with my kids’ generation. This is truly a dream come true.”

“Transformers: Galaxies delves into what’s happening away from Cybertron,” says editor David Mariotte. “Tyler and Livio are working on a story about broken promises and lost futures — about those who fall by the wayside to maintain a utopia.”

To commemorate the debut of Transformers: Galaxies, IDW will offer multiple variant covers, including Cover A by Livio Ramondelli, Cover B by Nick Roche, and two Retailer Incentive covers by George Caltsoudas and Casey W. Coller, respectively.

For information on how to secure copies of Transformers: Galaxies, as well as the parent series Transformers (now shipping monthly), please contact your local comic shop or visit www.comicshoplocator.com to find a store near you.

Todd McFarlane Set To Draw Upcoming Spawn #301

From Image Comics

With its 301st issue, Todd McFarlane’s SPAWN becomes the longest running creator-owned comic book in the world!

SPAWN launched to record sales of 1.7 million copies when its inaugural issue was released in 1992, helping to cement the early days of Image Comics as a game-changing, new era in creator-owned comic books. Now, 27-years later SPAWN, and Image Comics remain hallmarks of the comic book industry.

As a testament to the longevity of Todd McFarlane’s seminal creation, and to Image Comics’ revolutionary call for creators’ rights to own and control the characters and comic books they create, SPAWN’s 301st issue will be a truly historic release, as McFarlane’s award-winning, fan-favorite superhero, will become the longest running creator-owned comic book ever.

"I could think of no better reason to return to the drawing board than to celebrate the record-breaking 301st issue of the SPAWN comic,” said McFarlane, creator of SPAWN and President at Image Comics. “Twenty-seven years ago, I began this journey on the SPAWN title. That start, along with helping to co-found Image Comics, (today the third largest comic publisher in the nation) was with the goal of allowing creative people to own and control their ideas.

“It is with great pride that I can say that after nearly three decades of producing the SPAWN title, that I am still 100% in the creative driver's seat of the character I brought to life back in 1992,” said McFarlane. “I wrote and drew that first issue and will do the same for this historic issue as well."

To continue the celebration that begins with the deluxe sized, 72-page issue of SPAWN #300, McFarlane will return, once more, to pencil and ink interior story pages for the record-breaking SPAWN #301. Showcasing his unique blend of larger-than-life action and visual world-building, McFarlane will usher in SPAWN’s next creative evolution in his signature “hyper-detailed” style that has been an inspiration to artists and storytellers across all genres of entertainment media.

Joining Todd on SPAWN #301’s superstar creative team will be legendary SPAWN and Batman artist, Greg Capullo, critically-acclaimed illustrator, Jason Shawn Alexander, top comic artists, Clayton Crain, Jerome Opeña and Francesco Mattina, along with more surprises, including more top-tier comic book talent.

SPAWN #301, a 48-page full-color comic book will be in stores September 25, 2019. Also available will be black and white Spawn #301 “Artist Edition” variant showcasing McFarlane and Capullo’s original, inked artwork.

This record-breaking, history-making, oversized issue will retail for $4.99.

Unmade Horror Themed Spider-Man Movies Would Have Re-imagined His Origin

From Digital Spy

Spider-Man hasn’t always been in the steady hands of Sony and Marvel. In 1985, the rights to make a Spider-Man movie actually passed from Roger Corman to Cannon Films.

As much as we love B-movie supremo Roger Corman, his Fantastic Four adaptation wasn’t exactly MCU standard. It wasn’t even good enough to release officially (producer Berndt Eichinger reputedly only made it so that he could keep hold of the rights to the property).

Related: Amazing Spider-Man #102 (1963 1st Series) November 1971 Marvel Comics Grade Fine+

Cannon, meanwhile, weren’t known for their quality-control standards. The exchange basically meant that Spidey went from the frying pan into the fire. Cannon chiefs Menahem Golan and his cousin Yoram Globus paid just $225,000 for a five-year option (the rights reverted back to Marvel if a movie wasn’t made before 1990), and somehow still didn’t manage to profit from the licence.

Part of the problem was that they fundamentally didn’t get the character, and attempted to do something like David Cronenberg was doing with The Fly.

They targeted The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’s Tobe Hooper, and hired Outer Limits creator Leslie Stevens to draft an out-there version of Peter’s origin story.

In this new version, instead of being bitten by a radioactive spider, Parker was deliberately bombarded with radiation by a corporate scientist – named Doctor Zork – who transforms the ID photographer (not student, or journalist) into a giant eight-armed spider-hybrid, who’s so monstrous he swiftly becomes suicidal. Yay?

This man-spider is encouraged to lead the scientist’s race of mutants (shades of The Island Of Dr Moreau), but refuses and fights the creations instead.

Stan Lee, understandably, was unhappy with the changes and convinced Cannon to abandon this version of the project.

A new pitch was put together by Ted Newsom and John Brancato, which felt more traditional – and actually sounds a lot like the recent Spider-Man PS4 game.

As in the game, this take saw Otto Octavius as a teacher and mentor to a college-aged Peter Parker.

The cast they were going for was… Ambitious. Tom Cruise (admittedly early in his career) as Parker, Bob Hoskins as Doc Ock, Christopher Lee as a supporting scientist, Lauren Bacall or Katharine Hepburn for Aunt May, with Stan Lee potentially playing Daily Bugle editor J Jonah Jameson in a role that wasn’t so much a cameo as a supporting part.

Reportedly the movie would have featured profanity, and a sex scene between Parker and Mary Jane Watson. In 1992, the project was shut down.

In 1996, Marvel went bankrupt, returning in 1998 thanks to a Toy Biz deal. They sold many of their properties to film studios, with Spider-Man going to Columbia, a subsidiary of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

They sold as many licences as they could, only retaining the rights to the comic-book characters no-one else wanted. You know, folks like Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye… The nobodies, basically.

If Tobe Hooper had made his horror version of the Spider-Man character, maybe Cannon would still be churning out spider-movies today. Maybe Marvel wouldn’t have had to dip into their intellectual-property barrel, creating the MCU in the process. Maybe the current cinematic landscape would look completely different.

The Four Faces Of Doctor Who

The Fourth Doctor is an incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who. He was portrayed by Tom Baker.

Within the series' narrative, the Doctor is a centuries-old Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels in time and space in his TARDIS, frequently with companions. At the end of life, the Doctor can regenerate his body; as a result, his physical appearance and personality change. Baker portrays the fourth such incarnation, a whimsical and sometimes brooding individual whose enormous personal warmth is at times tempered by his capacity for righteous anger.

His initial companion was intrepid journalist Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), who had traveled alongside him in his previous incarnation, and she is later joined by surgeon Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter). His later companions included robotic dog K9, savage alien warrior Leela (Louise Jameson), Time Lady Romana (Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward), alien teenage aristocrat Nyssa (Sarah Sutton), teen genius Adric (Matthew Waterhouse), and Australian flight attendant Tegan (Janet Fielding).

Baker portrayed the character for seven consecutive seasons, which remains the longest tenure of any actor to portray the lead, counting both the classic and modern series. He is considered to be the most recognizable and iconic incarnation of the Doctor both in the United Kingdom and internationally.

Vampirella & Red Sonja Tean Up In Historic First Ongoing Series!

From Dynamite Entertainment

Long overdue history in the making! Dynamite's two flagship heroines are teaming up in a new ongoing series starting in September, written by the multitalented and Eisner-winning Jordie Bellaire (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Redlands) with art by Drew Moss (Star Wars).

The story starts in 1969, the genesis of Vampirella - timed perfectly with her 50th Anniversary now being celebrated in 2019. Vampi's new to Earth and still adapting to our world. She finds herself attracted to the supernatural and paranormal mysteries of the world. When suddenly she runs across a young Red Sonja, plucked out of time and clueless. The two women set forth on an adventure, collaborating as both detectives and warriors to find out what has happened... only for more space-time shenanigans to befall them! Do not expect any cliché misunderstanding fights, these two Women of Dynamite are working together, no holds barred.

Related: Red Sonja #2 Cosplay Cover C February 2017 Dynamite Entertainment Grade NM

This series marks Jordie Bellaire further flexing her skills as a writer, following widespread acclaim for her smash hit Buffy The Vampire Slayer relaunch and her Eisner-nominated creator-owned series Redlands. This is on top of her prolific continuing career as a colorist on the best selling and most critically acclaimed comics in the industry, including Batman, Deadpool, Vision, Pretty Deadly and countless more. Her unparalleled skill and reputation have so far garnered two Eisner Awards.

Joining Bellaire and Moss are Rebecca Nalty (Xena Warrior Princess, GLOW) on colors and Becca Carey (Planet of the Apes) on letters. The first issue will feature a range of talented cover artists. Terry and Rachel Dodson (Wonder Woman, Mr. and Mrs. X) lead the pack. Julian Totino Tedesco (Daredevil, Captain Marvel) contributes a fun cover. Babs Tarr (Batgirl, Motor Crush) joins the crew. Jordie herself will color fan-favorite artist Leonardo Romero's (Captain America, Shuri) piece. While interior artist Drew Moss will be doing "Then and Now" covers, depicting his modern style superimposed alongside classic art of the characters such as by Frank Frazetta. Watch out for covers from other huge names on future issues, as creators jump at the opportunity to draw these two characters side by side.

"Vampirella and Red Sonja are like the buddy cop team we never realized we wanted or could have. We’re hoping to stick the landing on something funny, upbeat and mysterious," said writer Jordie Bellaire. "Vampirella and Red Sonja will begin as strangers but soon become fast friends that look to support and encourage the other, all while being comical and maybe slightly murderous. This book has been a pleasure to write and I'm delighted with the team - everyone is bringing something awesome to the story! I'm so happy to be here with them."

Artist Drew Moss adds, "It has been a joy working with such a talented group of people, from the writing, colors, letters and editorial, they are the best. When I was first offered this book I was intimidated by the characters but when I was told we were just going to tell the best story we could, I knew I had to be a part of it. Every time a script, colors, covers or pages come in, the excitement builds inside me. I just hope people will be as excited as I am."

"This is the first time Vampirella and Red Sonja will be together in an ongoing series, and it’s been CRAZY cool to see what Jordie's got planned for the long haul here, and how Drew, Rebecca and Becca are visualizing it," said editor Nate Cosby. "We're delving deep into character and personality with both V and RS, creating a truly special dynamic. And there’s no “VS.” in the title…these two are joining forces to kick the ass of anything and everything that comes their way!"

"This series has been a long time coming. We've had many fun crossovers over the years, but needed the right voice to have our two most beloved characters in an ongoing series, and Jordie is just the one! Couple that with Drew Moss and the entire creative team, and this is a winner! An all-star team for our all-star characters," said Nick Barrucci, Dynamite CEO and Publisher. "We're incredibly proud to have Jordie on this and watch with fans as she continues to blow everyone's socks off with her writing!"

VAMPIRELLA/RED SONJA #1 will be solicited in Diamond Comic Distributors’ July 2019 Previews catalog, the premier source of merchandise for the comic book specialty market, and slated for release in September 2019. Comic book fans are encouraged to preorder copies with their local comic book retailers. It will also be available for individual customer purchase through digital platforms courtesy of Comixology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital, ComicsPlus, and more!

Jeffery Scott Campbell (born April 12, 1973) is an American comic book artist. He was initially known professionally as Jeffery Scott, but is best known as J. Scott Campbell. He rose to fame as an artist for Wildstorm Comics, though he has since done work for Marvel Comics (most notably as a cover artist on The Amazing Spider-Man), and the video game industry.

Ten issues in, this latest revival of the main X-title was already floundering. Bogged down by either the need for a weekly schedule or the weight of setting up the ‘Age of X-Man’ storyline, my interest in yet another volume of X-capades was waning. It’s only taken two issues for Matthew Rosenberg to completely turn this around and have me waiting intently for the next issue.

Last issue was all impact and set-up. Re-establishing Cyclops role in the team and setting the premise for the story going forward. This issue is break-neck pace and all-out action. Familiar characters populate the story, but this is a strengthening of the Logan and Cyke dynamic that hasn’t felt this strong since the sorely underrated ‘Schism’ storyline.

Matthew Rosenberg, excellent on We Can Never Go Home, strong on Phoenix Resurrection, and clearly has a Jones for all things X-related, has freed himself from the shackles of having to tidy up the X-play room and is now able to move with clearer purpose and direction in terms of story.

In two issues, he’s undone whatever my misgivings may be for Cyclops as he’s been used in the last five years. He’s already washed from my mind the failure-to-launch pointlessness of Wolverine’s death. Marvel, please let him spread his wings and bring the X-men back to a consistency it’s only shown glimpses of since being displaced by the Avengers as the flagship team. After so many false starts and hopes dashed, it’s time for a writer like Matthew Rosenberg to carve a big old X back into comics and really make his mark. - PopCultHQ

Wonder Woman's character was created during World War II; the character in the story was initially depicted fighting Axis military forces as well as an assortment of colorful supervillains, although over time her stories came to place greater emphasis on characters, deities, and monsters from Greek mythology. Many stories depicted Wonder Woman rescuing herself from bondage, which defeated the "damsels in distress" trope that was common in comics during the 1940s. In the decades since her debut, Wonder Woman has gained a cast of enemies bent on eliminating the Amazon, including classic villains such as Ares, Cheetah, Doctor Poison, Circe, Doctor Psycho, and Giganta, along with more recent adversaries such as Veronica Cale and the First Born. Wonder Woman has also regularly appeared in comic books featuring the superhero teams Justice Society (from 1941) and Justice League (from 1960).
