The Four Faces Of Doctor Who

The Fourth Doctor is an incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the BBC science fiction television series Doctor Who. He was portrayed by Tom Baker.

Within the series' narrative, the Doctor is a centuries-old Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey who travels in time and space in his TARDIS, frequently with companions. At the end of life, the Doctor can regenerate his body; as a result, his physical appearance and personality change. Baker portrays the fourth such incarnation, a whimsical and sometimes brooding individual whose enormous personal warmth is at times tempered by his capacity for righteous anger.

His initial companion was intrepid journalist Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen), who had traveled alongside him in his previous incarnation, and she is later joined by surgeon Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter). His later companions included robotic dog K9, savage alien warrior Leela (Louise Jameson), Time Lady Romana (Mary Tamm and Lalla Ward), alien teenage aristocrat Nyssa (Sarah Sutton), teen genius Adric (Matthew Waterhouse), and Australian flight attendant Tegan (Janet Fielding).

Baker portrayed the character for seven consecutive seasons, which remains the longest tenure of any actor to portray the lead, counting both the classic and modern series. He is considered to be the most recognizable and iconic incarnation of the Doctor both in the United Kingdom and internationally.

Monsters Attack! No. 4

by Armand Vaquer

A recent posting by Stan Hyde at Facebook Monsterland prompted this recollection.

Following Terror of Mechagodzilla in 1975, Toho Co., Ltd. put Godzilla on a long hiatus. During those years, all was quiet on the Godzilla front. Then, out of the blue, Toho released Godzilla in 1984 (renamed Return of Godzilla and released here (heavily edited) with Raymond Burr reprising his Steve Martin character as Godzilla 1985).

The movie, although well-done in its original Japanese form, received a lukewarm response here. The movie was a direct sequel to the original 1954 Godzilla and ignored all of the prior sequels. Then, following that movie, Godzilla disappeared again, at least as far as the United States was concerned.

In Japan, Toho finally decided to produce a sequel to the 1984 movie, based on a story-writing contest, in 1989. The result was Godzilla vs. Biollante. Unfortunately, not too many people in the U.S. were aware of this movie and it received no stateside theatrical release. It seemed that Godzilla was gone again.

However, the following year, Monsters Attack! (no. 4) was published. The cover date was September 1990, The magazine featured Godzilla on the cover by John Severin.

The magazine contained an article on Godzilla that recapped his cinematic career and featured the first word (and images) about Godzilla vs Biollante that many U.S. fans received. It was the first time I was made of aware of the movie. To me, in seeing those images, this was the best-designed Godzilla suit in a long time.

I remember buying Monsters Attack! at a local comic book shop and bringing it along to read on a camping vacation to Mount Rushmore and Yellowstone National Park in the summer of 1990. I still have the issue (somewhere around here).

Today, Monsters Attack! no. 4 is a much sought-after Godzilla collectible for being one of the first (if not the first) source of information Americans received about Godzilla vs. Biollante. It ranks up there with Famous Monsters of Filmland issue 114, the special 100-page all-Japanese monsters issue, as a collectible.

Jessie Lilley Departing "Famous Monsters of Filmland"

by Armand Vaquer

Above, Famous Monsters #253, where my ad first appeared.

It was bound to happen.

Jessie Lilley has announced that she is departing as editor of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine so she can re-start Mondo Cult magazine.

Lilley's statement:

Hey everybody! I’ve been with FM for over a year and it’s time to move on. I’m moving on to get Mondo Cult back on the stands. I’ll be finishing up Retro 71 and the door is open for possibly doing more Retros, but we’ll see how it goes as time goes by. My... heart lies with Retro and the more classic films, as you all know so there I am going. This has been a great year for me, and I hope also for Phil and the rest of the staff. I'm handing the editing reins over to him and wish him much luck and Godspeed. I hope I'll see you all in the pages of Mondo Cult 3 by the end of the year. - Jessie Lilley

Above, Famous Monsters #254, where my ad made its second appearance.

I worked with Jessie Lilley on my FM ads for The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan and during the process we exchanged numerous emails, some of which weren't business-related (and most often hilarious). She was a joy to work with and was a big help in the process of ad placement.

Above, the ad as created by Archie Waugh.

As I posted at the Classic Horror Film Board forum:

I'm going to miss Jessie's emails from FM. Good luck, Jessie! (You know where to find me.)

Famous Monsters of Filmland Continues To Expand Distribution

Source: Famous Monsters of Filmland

Publisher Movieland Classics announced today the release of Famous Monsters of Filmland 253, the first issue in its new bi-monthly production schedule. The company announced its decision to increase the frequency of Famous Monsters to a bi-monthly publication, up from their quarterly term, in response to a substantial demand for more FM content.

"We've dropped the cover price and increased our frequency to provide fans with more bang for their buck! I also believe readers will find the new format a lot more fun and still very informative," announced Senior Manager Philip Kim. Another noteworthy change: Opening Wounds, the editor's note has revealed the return of Forrest J Ackerman as the magazine's Honorary Editor-in-Chief. "This serves as a constant reminder to everyone-those reading and involved in bringing FM to readers-that fandom is fun... and science fiction and horror will never die," added editor, Jessie Lilley.

Bringing together classic and contemporary horror icons, Famous Monsters 253 features a behind the scenes look at the winter blockbuster, The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader, a peak into Season 2 of AMC's new hit show, The Walking Dead, an in-depth exclusive with Hellboy filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, and never-before-seen footage of African zombie chiller, The Dead. Also featured in the issue is H.G. Wells' Island of Lost Souls, the monsters of SyFy, Bollywood thriller Hisss, the return of the classic "Fangmail" and "Mystery Photo," and an original story by horror author Jack Ketchum. The new release features all this and more, wrapped up in a series of four variant covers by artists Kerry Gammill (Island of Lost Souls), dual covers by Charlie Adlard (The Walking Dead), and an ultra rare cover by the legendary William Stout (Mummy).

With the outstanding success of Famous Monsters 252 (now entirely sold out!), the circulation of the popular magazine continues to expand with every issue. Famous Monsters of Filmland is now available in comic shops, major newsstands in Southern California and Canada, major bookstores such as Barnes & Noble and Borders, and Famous Monsters' online retail store, Captain Company (www.captainco.com).

Famous Monsters #253 Cover Revealed

by Armand Vaquer

The cover for Famous Monsters of Filmland #253 containing my ad for The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan will look like this (unless they decide to do some tweaking here and there):

As you can see, it is a beautiful painted cover depicting Bela Lugosi as the "Sayer of the Law" in Paramount Pictures's Island of Lost Souls (1932), which is a version of the H. G. Wells novel, The Island of Dr. Moreau that was first published in 1896.

In case you haven't seen it, here's my ad:

Speaking of Island of Lost Souls, when will it be put out on DVD? This movie cries out for a DVD release!

With only about a week until monsters and mayhem take over Indianapolis, IN for the Famous Monsters Convention, we are proud to announce some new additions to the guest lineup. Veteran horror actress Danielle Harris (the Halloween franchise) will be on hand at FM Con. Besides appearing in Halloween 4 and 5 as Jamie Lloyd, and in the Halloween reboot as the ill-fated Annie Brackett, Danielle will soon appear in the films Hatchet II and Stake Land (both of which will be covered in the upcoming FM #251) as well as William Forsythe directed vampire flick New Blood.

Real-life paranormal investigators and Ghost Hunters International alumni Shannon Sylvia and Brian Joseph Harnois will also be making an appearance, as will Michael Nicolosi, voice of the fan favorite character Clown on HBO's 1997-1999 Spawn animated series.

Harry Knowles, Steve "Capone" Prokopy and Jarrell Jay "Father Geek" Knowles of movie megasite Ain't It Cool News will be among the attendees. Harry's nephew, who played The Kid Zombie from the movie Pathogen will be in attendance and it will be his first con (a male, time-honored rite of passage).

Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts, actresses Margot Kidder, Lori Cardille, and Kim Myers will be unable to make the convention. We here at FM wish them the best and hope to see them next year.

The city of Indianapolis has shown Famous Monsters great affection spearheaded by the mayor, who will be performing the ribbon cutting ceremony to start this year's FMCon. Halcyon International Pictures Teams Up With Famous Monsters Of Filmland To Reboot Classic Universal Horrors

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Sources: Halcyon International Pictures

Remember last Tuesday when I posted a rumor coming out of Cannes that "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine was planning on getting into the movie making business?

Well, now it's official.

This morning, Halcyon International Pictures has announced that it has teamed up with "Famous Monsters" to reboot several of the classic movie monster franchises made by Universal Studios.

The indie movie maker, that first broke into the business in 1985 with "Re-Animator", issued this brief statement through their website:

"For decades, they roamed the cinemas, video stores and late night TV, haunting us, exciting us and inspiring us… Now, the Famous Monsters are back...in Five ALL NEW movies ready to entertain an all new generation."

Here is the list:

DRACULA: REBORN
MUMMY: RESURRECTED
FRANKENSTEIN: REGENERATED
WEREWOLF: RELOADED
CREATURE: RETURNS

Along with this announcement came four new graphics for all of the films, except the Creature reboot.

I don't know about you, but I don't know quite what to think about all this? How are fans going to react to some of the most beloved movie monsters of all-time getting remade for the 2000's?

From these images, three of the films look like standard remakes, but the Wolfman on a space station?

Well.....that's what the pic looks like? Doesn't it?

I've got a bad feeling, though I will reserve my comments until more information surfaces.

Maybe it's a good thing that they haven't come up with a new design for The Creature yet?

Check these out:

Famous Monsters To Bring Back The Creature, The Mummy, Frankenstein And Others To The Silver Screen?

Written By: Ken Hulsey
Source: Bloody Disgusting / Avery Guerra

Just wanted to tip everyone off to some interesting news that is breaking at Cannes.

According to a source at the movie festival, the newly revived, "Famous Monsters of Filmland" magazine has announced that they are getting into the movie making biz.

So far, the magazine, once owned by the legendary publisher, Forrest J Ackerman, has a slate of five classic Universal horror franchises that they either wish to relaunch, or remake.

Check out these titles: Dracula: Reborn, Mummy: Resurrected, Frankenstein: Regenerated, Werewolf: Reloaded and Creature: Returns.

Not much else has surfaced about these potential new monster films, obviously based on the classic monster films of the 30s, 40s and 50s.

Is this true? Could "Famous Monsters" be about to start making their own films?

We'll wait and see. This could just be a rumor.

I wonder what Universal will have to say about this?

Wes Keller is a young man born to a world where oil has collapsed, the food supply has been wiped out, and cancer rates for women have skyrocketed, depleting the female population. In a barbaric environment where bio fuel, batteries, bullets and people are currency and marauders roam free, Wes tries to escape to a mythical world run on cold fusion "Plutopia", a place that may only exist in the mind.

THE BILL IS DUE. 'Downstream' is a view of the not so distant future. We journey with Wes (humanity's son) as he pays an unthinkable price for society's past decadence.

Famous Monsters Of Filmland Magazine Returns!

Source: Famous Monsters Of Filmland (Press Release)

Those were the immortal words of Dr. Frankenstein (pronounced Frahn-kun-shteen!) portrayed by Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein. The line embodied the passion and sheer exuberance of a man who had just taken a famous monster, once thought to be gone forever, and returned it to life (and given it the ability to do some sweet musical numbers). Today, we share those sentiments as we announce the return of Famous Monsters of Filmland, the print magazine.

While we’re well into development on the first issues, we’re going to be keeping mum on a lot of the details. Here are a few pieces that we can share with you right now:

- In order to make sure that FM gets as wide a release as possible, we’ve teamed with IDW Publishing. Not only are they one of the largest comic publishers in the country, recipient of Diamond Distributor’s “Publisher of the Year” award 4 times, publisher of such hit comics as 30 Days of Night, Joss Whedon’s Angel, Locke and Key, and Transformers; they also happen to be huge monster kids.

More on IDW here.

Our editor-in-chief will be Michael Heisler, a 20-year veteran of the industry who brings a wealth of experience, along with his enthusiasm, to the relaunch.

“FM was far and away my favorite magazine when I was a kid, and there has been nothing quite like it since,” said Heisler. “Our goal is to update that magic for a modern audience, with coverage of current horror in all its forms, while continuing to pay tribute to the classic films that started it all. Personally, I’m thrilled to be taking this step down the road that Forry Ackerman and ‘Chilly Billy’ Cardille put me on so many years ago.”

-The magazine will begin its run in the summer of 2010 and be released quarterly. We haven’t set an exact date for release yet but we hear there’s some kind of big event in the summer where over 150,000 people dress up in costumes and head to San Diego. Just a rumor, probably.

Over the coming months we’ll be bringing you plenty of updates. From details on the covers to content and contributors, you’ll see it all here first. Make sure to check back and sign-up at our social networking sites (those icons in the upper right on the front page) as we’ll be releasing different info on all of them from time-to-time.

Last but not least, we’re counting on you to leave us comments and tell us your thoughts on what you’d like to see in the new FM. This is the time to make your voice heard and help forge the path that the magazine will take. Don’t be shy; all are welcome.

“I’ve always loved Famous Monsters, and when I discovered an opportunity to reinvent the brand for modern times, I jumped at it,” said Phil Kim, FM’s Senior Manager. “Knowing the legacy and the great expectations that came with this iconic trademark, I looked long and hard for a suitable company with an impeccable reputation for quality and respect. After a two-year search, I am proud to announce our partnership with IDW.”
