Barstow Station recently marked a significant milestone, celebrating its 50th anniversary as a beloved hotspot for both residents and tourists. Once hailed as the “World’s Largest Railroad Depot Shopping Mall,” this unique destination first opened its doors on July 10, 1975. Owner Fred Rosenberg had long anticipated this moment, and when the day finally arrived, it drew a large crowd eager to experience its charm. Designed to evoke the feel of a turn-of-the-century railroad terminal, Barstow Station became an instant sensation.Situated conveniently along Main Street, known as Old U.S. Route 66, and nestled between Interstate 15 and Interstate 40, Barstow Station debuted with a diverse array of shops and eateries. Among them was a standout— a “McDonald’s McDiner,” featuring a classic railroad dining car that brought a nostalgic flair to the fast-food experience. Over the years, Barstow Station has undergone numerous renovations, embraced many new retail offerings, and weathered a substantial fire, yet it remains a thriving hub for visitors.
Community leader Louise Miller shared her thoughts on the impact of Barstow Station, noting its pivotal role in transforming Barstow from a mere stopover into an attractive destination. “Before 1975, Barstow was not a destination city, and we were mainly known as one of the last bathroom stops on the way to Las Vegas,” she explained. “Barstow Station changed all of that.” This vibrant venue now serves almost 20,000 tour buses annually and attracts countless travelers along the interstate, according to its ownership.
The popularity of Barstow Station has certainly endured the test of time. In the 1970s, the McDonald’s located within the Station was touted as the highest-grossing franchise in the entire company, a testament to its appeal. Today, visitors can still enjoy a meal at McDonald’s, explore the unique offerings at Double R Gifts, The Hollywood Store, and even catch a ride with Greyhound Bus Lines, among other businesses. Barstow Station continues to be a cornerstone of the community and a must-visit attraction for all who find themselves in the Mojave Desert.
